RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis, known as "a quiet epidemic disease", is an "invisible killer" that impairs the health of the elderly. Fracture as the most dangerous complication of osteoporosis is not only a medical problem, but also a serious social problem. OBJECTIVE: To summarize the selection, establishment methods, characters and evaluation of the animal model of osteoporosis. METHODS: A computed-based search of CBM, WanFang, VIP, CNKI and PubMed databases was conducted for the relevant articles published from January 1986 to December 2016 using the keywords of "osteoporosis, animal models" in English and Chinese, respectively. Finally 39 articles were included for result analysis after reading the title and abstract. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Animal experiments play an important role in the studies of osteoporosis, so a desirable animal model should hold similarity, reliability, repeatability, applicability, controllability, efficacy and economy. Osteoporosis is a progressive and long-lasting disease that has different characteristics at different stages. But an animal model only simulates one etiology, one stage, major symptoms and pathophysiological changes, and cannot exhibit the whole pathological changes. The current study suggests that animal species and modeling methods can affect the characters of models, and there is a lack of standards for animal age, feeding methods, modeling time and assessment.

RESUMO

Aeroto-Niu-O16, an oxygen-tolerant bovine rumen bacterium, is capable of aerobically reducing isoflavones daidzein and genistein to dihydrodaidzein and dihydrogenistein through catalytic hydrogenation. In this study, it was found that bacterium strain Aeroto-Niu-O16 was able to cleavage the C-ring of liquiritigenin (LG), which is one of the main biologically active components of licorice roots, in the presence of atmospheric oxygen. LG was prepared by acid hydrolysis of the crude extract of licorice roots. The metabolite of LG obtained in strain Aeroto-Niu-O16 was identified as davidigenin (DG) based on the data of UV, MS, 1H and 13C NMR. The maximal concentration of LG that the strain Aeroto-Niu-O16 was able to transform effectively was 0.8 mmol x L(-1) and the average productivity of the metabolite DG was 71.7%. Furthermore, when 0.1% (m/v) of L-cysteine or sodium thiosulfate was added in the cultural medium, the average bioconversion rate of LG was increased from 71.7% to 78.3% and 77.2%, respectively. The in vitro antioxidant investigation showed that 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging activity of DG was significantly or extremely significantly higher than that of LG at the concentrations from 0.2 mmol x L(-1) to 1.6 mmol x L(-1). We discoverd for the first time that LG can be converted to DG, which has stronger and wider biological activities, through microbial biotransformation method.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVETo explore the intervention effect of the auricular stimulator in the cavum concha for diabetes.

METHODSForty-five cases were treated with auricular simulator in the cavum concha for 30 min, once daily for consecutive 3 months. The changes of the fasting plasma glucose (FBG), blood glucose load after 2-hour 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (P2 BG)and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) were compared before and after treatment.

RESULTSThe level of the HbA1c was obviously decreased (P < 0.05, P < 0.01), and there were also statistically significant differences in FBG and P2 BG after the treatment (P < 0.05, P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONWith the auricular stimulator, the stimulation in the cavum concha is benefit for the improvement of HbA1c of the diabetes.
