RESUMO

55 patients with T3 and T4 supraglottic carcinoma were studied. These patients were classified into three groups according to the treatment modality. Patients in group A had received a short intensive preoperative course of irradiation [21 Gy in 7 equal daily fractions of 3 Gy] followed within 4-6 days by total laryngectomy [SICI + S]. Patients in group B had received full curative doses of irradiation [60-70 Gy in 6-7 weeks] followed by salvage laryngectomy [FCCRT + S] due either to a residual lesion or an early recurrence. A third group C comprised patients treated by total laryngectomy alone without antecedent irradiation. A short intensive course of irradiation followed by total laryngectomy [SICI + S] gave a better loco- regional control rate than those of the other two groups. There was less incidence of fistulae in comparison with group B and an improvement in lymph node control in comparison with groups B and C

RESUMO

The dermatoglyphic findings in 28 patients [16 males and 12 females] of otosclerosis are studied. The data showed some differences between patients and control in the ridge counts and pattern intensities of fingers and palms, but significances of these differences are not clear, so the study cannot use dermatoglyphic analysis as criteria for diagnosis of such disease

RESUMO

This study was done upon 30 patients with cholesteatoma. The patients were subjected to CT scanning before surgery. The CT findings were of great value to the surgeon and those findings were in accordance with the operative findings in very high percentage. The following value for the CT scanning were concluded: Important for early diagnosis of cholesteatoma and if the diagnosis is not obvious, it reveals extent of the disease, it reveals cholesteatoma at hidden areas e.g, sinus tympani, it discloses complications of cholesteatoma, it reveals anatomical variations that may be encountered during surgery. So, C.T scanning is useful prior to surgery for the previous values and also useful for postoperative follow up for the possibility of residual or recurrent lesion

RESUMO

Twenty patients were hospitalized for diagnostic or therapeutic procedures using suspension laryngoscopy. They were classified into two equal groups, nonpretreated lidocaine group [control group] that received general anesthesia only and pretreated lidocaine group that received intravenous lidocaine 2 mg/kg 2 minutes before induction of anesthesia. It was observed that there was an increase in mean arterial blood pressure, heart rate and rate pressure product at all observation times. This increase was significant immediately after intubation and with suspension. The increase in these parameters was more in the control group than in the lidocaine treated one. Also, transient ventricular extrasystole was recorded in 40% in the control group and 10% in the lidocaine pretreated group. A significant increase was found in paCo2 accompanied with a significant decrease in pH in both groups. These changes were more in the control group. There was also an increase in paO2 in both groups. This increase was more significant in lidocaine pretreated group

RESUMO

This is a retrospective study for the cases of chronic suppurative otitis media with cholesteatoma. The aim of work was to throw light upon the variable clinical presentations and radiological findings among those patients as well as to study the operative details done. The study included 135 patients proved by surgical exploration to be complicated by cholesteatoma formation. These cases were admitted during a period of two years from 1988 to the end of 1989

RESUMO

Forty two otherwise healthy patients undergoing short surgical procedures of the larynx and vocal cords were investigated In an open study to examine the effect of intravenous lidocaine in preventing laryngospasm and coughing upon extubation. Induction of anesthesia was carried out with thiopentone and suxamethonium followed by orotracheal Intubation and anesthesia was maintained, by O[2] and N[2] O[50% each] halothane for all the patients. They were randomly divided into two groups, group 1 included 21 patients who received lidocaine 2 mg/kg prior to intubation while group 2 [21 patients] received nothing before intubation and served as control. One patient [4.8%] in lidocaine group developed laryngospasm. In the control group, 5 patients [23.8%] developed laryngospasm which was relieved just after i.v. administration of lidocaine 2 mg. kg. The incidence of coughing [more than 5 sec.] in the recovery period was [19.2%] in lidocaine group compared to [81.3%] in control group. It can be concluded from this study that lidocaine 2 mg/kg decreases the incidence of extubation laryngospasm as well as coughing in the recovery period following short surgical procedures of the larynx and vocal cords after general anesthesja
