RESUMO

Purpose@#Given the long history of investigation into cancer and its relevance to the lymph node (LN), it would be meaningful to plot the trends of research on cancer-related LN. @*Methods@#Queries such as “cancer,” “lymph node,” and “cancer and lymph node” were submitted to PubMed to collect articles on cancer and LN published between 1945 and 2017. The collected articles were then extracted by an automatic web crawler and examined through informetrics and linguistic analysis. @*Results@#The number of articles related to cancer was 2,795,476 and 127,897 articles (4.6%) were found to be relevant to LN. With regard to cancer types, breast cancer was the most studied (37%), followed by gastric cancer (17%). With regard to the subjects in which the surgeon is interested, LN metastasis (57%) was found to be the topic most discussed, followed by LN dissection (22%) and sentinel LN (17%). Publications on LN metastasis gradually increased over time from 1988 to 2017 although those on sentinel LN and LN dissection have stagnated since the early 2000s. @*Conclusion@#Although research on cancer was abundant, only a small portion was dedicated to investigating its relevance to LN. Western countries had led the research on cancer-related LN, but Asian countries began to participate as major players, expanding their contributions. While LN metastasis, one of the major cancer-related LN topics, showed a steady increase, those involved in oncologic surgery such as LN dissection and sentinel LN did not.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in public recognition of parabens on Twitter and the research status of parabens related to toothpaste. METHODS: Tweet information between 2010 and October 2016 was collected by an automatic web crawler and examined according to tweet frequency, key words (2012-October 2016), and issue tweet detection analyses to reveal changes in public recognition of parabens on Twitter. To investigate the research status of parabens related to toothpaste, queries such as “paraben,”“paraben and toxicity,”“paraben and (toothpastes or dentifrices),” and “paraben and (toothpastes or dentifrices) and toxicity” were used. RESULTS: The number of tweets concerning parabens sharply increased when parabens in toothpaste emerged as a social issue (October 2014), and decreased from 2015 onward. However, toothpaste and its related terms were continuously included in the core key words extracted from tweets from 2015. They were not included in key words before 2014, indicating that the emergence of parabens in toothpaste as a social issue plays an important role in public recognition of parabens in toothpaste. The issue tweet analysis also confirmed the change in public recognition of parabens in toothpaste. Despite the expansion of public recognition of parabens in toothpaste, there are only seven research articles on the topic in PubMed. CONCLUSIONS: The general public clearly recognized parabens in toothpaste after emergence of parabens in toothpaste as a social issue. Nevertheless, the scientific information on parabens in toothpaste is very limited, suggesting that the efforts of dental scientists are required to expand scientific knowledge related to parabens in oral hygiene measures.

RESUMO

The symptoms related to gastrointestinal (GI) tract are sometimes chief complaints in patients with endocrine disease. Thyrotoxicosis is a rare, but notable cause for unexplained and repeated vomiting. Here, we report an adolescent patient with thyrotoxicosis who was initially presented with repeated vomiting and epigastric pain. A 13-year-old female was referred to a GI outpatient department for evaluation of vomiting and abdominal pain from a pediatric clinic. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed acute gastritis with duodenogastric reflux and suspicious reflux esophagitis of minimal change, but there was no significant improvement after treatment and as a result she was admitted to the emergency room. She was subsequently diagnosed as Graves' disease because an initial laboratory test at the GI outpatient department revealed thyroid stimulating hormone < 0.01 microIU/mL and additional blood tests showed elevated thyroid hormones and positive thyroid stimulating hormone receptor antibody. The vomiting and epigastric pain improved remarkably after treatment with antithyroid drugs. Clinicians should consider the possibility of thyrotoxicosis in patient with unexplained and repeated vomiting.

RESUMO

Intramural hematoma of the gastrointestinal tract is an uncommon occurrence with the majority being localized to the esophagus or duodenum. Hematoma of the gastric wall is very rare, and has been reported most commonly in association with coagulopathy, trauma, hematologic disease, and therapeutic endoscopy. Here we describe a case of intramural gastric hematoma after epinephrine injection therapy for a gastric ulcer with underlying liver cirrhosis that was successfully managed with conservative therapy.

RESUMO

Gastrointestinal stroma tumors (GISTs) are CD117- positive primary mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract and are noted to have a possible non-random association with neurofibromatosis-1 (NF-1, Von Recklinghausen disease). We report a case of a duodenal GIST presenting with gastrointestinal bleeding in a 74-year-old female, and this condition was accompanied with NF-1. A upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and abdominal computed tomography scan revealed several submucosal tumors in the duodenum, jejunum and ileum. Histological and immunohistochemical studies on the surgical resection specimen revealed gastrointestinal stromal tumors of an uncommitted type. The patient was treated with local excision of the tumors and is now in a favorable state.

RESUMO

Anisakiasis is a rare finding in the colon in comparison with its involvement in the stomach. Also, anisakiasis of the colon is usually incidentally diagnosed during either endoscopy or on operation for intestinal obstruction due to the fact that anisakiasis of the colon does not have typical clinical features. In other words, the diagnosis of colonic anisakiasis is usually made after surgical exploration. We herein report on two cases of anisakiasis of the colon that were treated successfully by colonoscopic removal of the worm without any surgery. A review of the related literature is included.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Recently, the colour change plaster (NeuroCheck(R)) has been introduced, which measures sweat production on the basis of a colour change from blue to pink. This new test was useful to detect of diabetic peripheral neuropathy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of the colour change plaster (NeuroCheck(R)) for the diagnosis of cardiac autonomic neuropathy in type 2 diabetic patients. METHODS: This study include 35 type 2 diabetic patients (10 male, 25 female) with a mean age of 55+/-14.9 years and a mean diabetes duration of 11.8+/-8.8 years. Cardiac autonomic neuropathy was diagnosed by means of Ewing's method. Peripheral autonomic neuropathy (Sudomotor function abnormality) was assessed by means of time (more than 600 seconds) until complete colour change in the indicator test. RESULTS: Peripheral autonomic neuropathy was diagnosed in 23 patients (65.7%). Time until starting colour change of plaster in normal and abnormal sudomotor patients were 38.3+/-33.7 sec and 367.1+/-470.3 sec (p<0.05). Time until completing colour change of plaster in normal and abnormal sudomotor patients were 372.5+/-198.8 sec and 1677.4+/-711.9 sec (p<0.05). The autonomic score of two groups were 2.4+/-2.3, 4.6+/-2.2 (p<0.05). Sudomotor abnormal group was older than normal (59.2+/-11.7 yrs, vs 47+/-17.4 yrs). Presence of retinopathy was related with sudomotor abnormality. Peripheral autonomic neuropathy was related with parasympathetic cardiac autonomic neuropathy. Sudomotor function abnormality was related with definite cardiac autonomic neuropathy, but it was not related with early cardiac autonomic neuropathy. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of colour change plaster in the diagnosis of definitive cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy was 86.7%, 62.5%, 68.4% and 83.3%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The colour change plaster (NeuroCheck(R)) is not useful for the early diagnosis of cardiac autonomic neuropathy in type 2 diabetic neuropathy, but it may be possible for the screening test of definite cardiac autonomic neuropathy.
