RESUMO

Atrial myxomas are the commonest primary cardiac tumors and usually affect the left atrium. Patients with atrial myxomas present with intracardiac obstruction, embolization to the pulmonary and systemic circulation, or constitutional symptoms

The coronary arteries' involvement in myxomatous embolization, although rare, has been described to cause acute myocardial infarction [AMI]

We report a case of atrial myxoma associated MI and present the clinical and echocardiographic features of this presentation followed by review of the English literature for the association of atrial myxomas and acute myocardial infarctions [AMI]

RESUMO

Current malaria treatments are based on the use of artemisinin based combinations. In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the combination of pyrimethamine/sulfadoxine/artesunate is the first line of treatment of uncomplicated malaria, while lumefantrine/artemether [Coartem] is used as a second option. The treatment of severe malaria rests on the use of quinine or artesunate. In Saudi Arabia, most cases of malaria are imported, mainly from emigrant workers from the Indian subcontinent and the Eastern part of Africa. As a result, most parasites might have been exposed to antimalarials prior to coming to the country. Thus, knowledge of the pattern of resistance to these drugs outside the country could contribute to better management of the disease. In this review, we have summarized our current knowledge on the efficacy and resistance patterns of currently used antimalarials. Alternative treatments that could be used against malaria in the Kingdom are also discussed

RESUMO

Schistosomiasis [bilharziasis] is a major health problems in many parts of the world, including Saudi Arabia. Although the liver is one of the most commonly affected organs, the biliary system is seldom affected and gallbladder schistosomiasis is extremely rare and has never been reported in Saudi Arabia. A case of gallbladder bilharziasis is presented and the world literature on the subject from 1966 till the end of 1993 is reviewed. The highest reported incidence is 2.5% of 1220 autopsy cases of bilharziasis; different aspects of gallbladder bilharziasis are also discussed
