Study of complement activation product in active rheumatic fever

The C3 serum level was found to be significantly decreased in the group of rheumatic chorea. The immunoglobulins IgM and IgA were significantly increased in all the patients studied. Complement as a mediator of inflammation in post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis

Serum complement C3 and C4 and the immunoglobulins IgG, IgA and IgM were studied in 40 children with post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis. The serum levels of C3 and IgG levels showed significant decrease when compared to a control group of 20 healthy children, while the serum IgM showed significant increase. The decreased C3 and IgG level could be attributed to increased utilization in antigen/antibody complexes. Immunocytochemical staining for CEA in small cell carcinoma of lung predicts clinical usefulness of plasma assay

Recent studies have shown CEA levels useful in both staging and monitoring response to treatment in patients with small cancer of the lung [SCCL]. CEA elevations do not occur in all patients however, and have been of less value in patients with limited disease. Immunoperoxidase staining of CEA performed on tumor tissue from 48 patients [17 extensive, 31 limited disease] with SCCL revealed: 1] A strong correlation between positive CEA tissue staining and plasma CEA elevation. Plasma CEA elevations occurred in 18/21 CEA tissue positive patients and correlated with the clinical course in all 18. In contrast elevated plasma CEA levels were seen only in 3/27 CEA tissue negative patients; 2] CEA tissue positive patients had a high incidence of extensive liver metastasis [43% versus 7%, 3]. No correlation between histologic subtype and CEA tissue staining was apparent

Serum haptoglobin and alpha 2 macroglobulin in different grades of burns

The study was conducted on 30 patients sufferings from various degrees of burns. These patients were classified into 3 groups according to the surface area affected by the burn. Proportional to varies 2 -macroglobulin and haptoglobin were estimated during the first 24 hours after burn by automated immunoprecipitation. The study was a cross- sectional one at the time of confirming the diagnosis to see if the studied proteins could assist in staging or prognosis of burn condition. Serum proportional to varies 2 macroglobulin was significantly increased in group I and Hp was also increased especially in group III
