RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: [a].To find out cause of abnormal uterine bleeding in different age groups of patients. [b].To find out inaccuracies of the procedure, complications and to compare it with recent techniques like hysteroscope. DESIGN: Case study. PERIOD: Jan 1996 to Dec 1996 SETTING: Department of obstetric and Gynaecology Bahawal victoria hospital Bahawalpur. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 500 cases of abnormal uterine bleeding [excluding known cases of incomplete abortion] of different age group were studied with more than 3 months symptoms. The results show that at perimenopause and menopausal ages [40, 45 to 50 years] EUA D and C is mandatory due to increased incidence of benign organic lesions [40%, 30%, 20%]. Incidence of endometrial carcinoma at 40 years 4%, 45-50 years 15% 50 years above to 20% [average 10%]. The role of D and C below the age of 30 years is negligible due to less incidence of endometrial pathology. 45% of cases on average in each age groups show no histopathologic finding. CONCLUSIONS: EUA, D and C is mandatory after age of 40 years. It is as effective as hysteroscopy, requiring less skill easily performed in any hospital setting
