RESUMO

Fibromatosis of the temporal region is extremely rare. It has also been referred to as extra-abdominal desmoid which orininates from muscle or fascia and it is a highly recurrent tumor. This paper presents a case of temporal muscle fibromatosis and a brief review of the pertinent literature.

RESUMO

The morphdogical changes in mast cells, induced by horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and distilled water were studied, using light and electron microscopy. The mesenteries of rats sacrificed at 30 minutes; at 1, 2, 4 and 18 hours; and at 1, 2, 3 and 6 weeks after an intraperitoneal injection of 250 microgram or 500 microgram of HRP or 10 ml of distilled water were used for observation of degranulation rates and morphological changes in cell organelles during specified time intervals. The results were as follows: 1) A distinct increase in the mast cell degranulation was observed in the mesenteries after injection of HRP. In particular, all mast cells were disrupted or degranulated significantly 18 hours after injection of distilled water. 2) The degranulating mast cells of the group injected with HRP showed a progressive decrease in electron density of the granules, formation of perigranular cavities, and extrusion of the granules after partial loss of the plasma membrane. 3) At 2 weeks after injection of HRP, some indicators of the early stage of regeneration, that is, peripherally placed nucleus, the expanded Golgi area containing numerous vesicles, and progranules in these vesicles, were observed. 4) After 6 weeks, the morphological characteristics of most mast cells in the group injected with HRP were nearly the same as those of the control group. 5) In degranulating mast cells of the group injected with distilled water, partial rupture of the plasma and cytoplasm with wide dispersion of the granules.

RESUMO

The Department of Plastic Surgery of the Yonsei University College of Medicine in Korea studied 2422 cases of cleft lip and cleft palate patients for 20 years An analysis of the date resulted in the following: 1) of the 33,130 live births in our hospital in 20 years (Jan. 1962-Dec. 1981), 44 of the birth certificates specified cleft lip or palate. This is a ratio of 1.33 cases per 1000 live births. 2) The ratios for left to right to bilateral cleft was 3.4:1.9:1.0. Higher percentage of males than females had cleft lip-palate combined, than cleft lip only. A higher percentage of females had cleft palate only. 3) A positive family history was noted in 151 out of 2422 cases; (6.3%). 4) 45% of the patients had an associated congenital malforation of which heart anomaly was the most common. 5) Lip closure was scheduled to be done within 3 months of age; palate closure was scheduled between 12 to 18 months. 6) The triangular flap method was used for the lip repair. The palate was repaired by the KilnerWardill method in all cases. The operative results were satisfactory m both lip controur and speech. Noting the lack of published reports about this topic, especially among the oricental population, we believe this paper will serve to enhance the knowledge of the field of cleft lip and cleft palate patients in Asia.

RESUMO

Cell patterns in open wound healing are studied by both light and electron microscopic examinations in regards to time sequence, metamorphosis, and functional aspects. Process of the open wound healing clearly exhibited not only time sequence of cllular appearance but also zonation of cells. In the initial stage, until the 3rd day, the neutrophilic polymorphonuclear leukocytes were predominant and particularly concentrated in the scab region. The mononuclear cells were active cells during the 1st to 7th day and were mainly concentrated in the subscab region. The fibroblastic activities started from the 3rd day and became very active during the 5th to the 10th day, and they were concentrated at granulation tissue region. During the process of wound healing, the cellular elements underwent metamorphosis; The neutrophils from normal to swollen and finally degenerating; the mononuclear to macrophages; the fibroblasts from immature to mature actively protein synthesizing cells. The functions of each cellular element can not be determined with certainty. However, the main function of neutrophils in wound healing is likely the formation of front line defense as a part of the scab formation on the surface. And the major function of mononuclear cells is to debride exudates and damaged tissue debris especially at the subscab area and that of the fibroblasts to replace the tissue defect by proliferation and production of fibrous proteins.

RESUMO

In order to evaluate relationships between survival time of skin homografts and blood glucose levels a total of 187 viable homografts performed on 41 rabbits was observed Five group experiments were undertaken, namely normal, alloxan diabetic, insulin hypoglycemic, treated diabetic, and sugar-fed groups. In the diabetic group alloxan was given intravenously (40 mg/kg, 80 mg/kg and 129 mg/kg to 3 sub-groups respectively) and varied degrees of permanent diabetic states were confirmed. The survival of skin homografts in diabetic animals is strikingly prolonged (mean survivals of 11, 13, and 18 days respectively in groups receiving 40, 80, and 120mg/kg alloxan) compared with 7days for the control grafts. The degree of hyperglycemia was proportional to the amount of alloxan given and, likewise, the survival time of skin homografts was in general proportional to the blood glucose level.
