RESUMO

Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP) is a rare primary intrathoracic tumor that arises from mesenchymal tissue underlying the mesothelial layer of the pleura. It usually has an indolent clinical course. The hypoglycemia that accompanies SFTP was first described by Doege and Potter independently in 1930, hence the eponym Doege-Potter syndrome (DPS). The incidence of DPS is reported to be ~4%. In this report, we present a typical case of DPS that was cured through complete surgical resection.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of the arthroscopic exploration combined with modified Brostrom operation (MBO) for the treatment of chronic lateral ankle instability (CAI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty patients who diagnosed a CAI were performed MBO. We divided to 2 groups, whether simultaneously inspected by arthroscopy (group B) or not (group A). The both group's results were compared according to American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society Ankle-hindfoot score (AOFAS), functional ankle score and visual analog scale (VAS) at preoperative and final follow-up period. RESULTS: There were no significant differences of AOFAS, functional ankle score and VAS between both groups at final follow-up. However, in group A, 2 cases associated with medial ankle instability and syndesmotic injuries were did not diagnosed preoperatively, showed poor prognosis. In group B, one case had a permanent peroneal nerve symptom. The match rate of intra-articular lesions between preoperative diagnosis and postoperative arthroscopic diagnosis was 30% in group B. CONCLUSION: Combination of arthroscopic exploration and MBO is effective strategy for intra-operatively discrimination of intra-articular associated lesions for CAI.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical features, results, and prognosis of posterior interosseous nerve injury related to fracture or dislocation of the proximal radius. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From patients with posterior interosseous nerve injury between January, 1985 to December 2002, fourteen patients were selected. There were 2 cases with fracture of the proximal radius alone, 6 cases with fracture of both bones of the forearm, 5 cases with Monteggia fracture, and 1 case of radius head fracture. Eight cases showed nerve injury at the time of trauma, 3 cases after open reduction, and 3 cases after hardware removal. The involved nerve was explored in patients without spontaneous recovery for further treatment. Final range of motion, motor function, and satisfaction were used to assess the results. RESULTS: Seven cases, all with closed fracture, showed spontaneous recovery. The average time of recovery was 6.2 weeks. The remaining 7 cases were treated by neurorraphy (1 case), neurolysis (1 case), sural nerve graft (2 cases), and tendon transfer (3 cases). All cases showed satisfactory results. CONCLUSION: Traumatic posterior interosseous nerve injury rarely happens. Injury after closed fracture usually shows spontaneous recovery. Injury can also take place during open reduction or hardware removal. In cases without spontaneous recovery, The prognosis is generally good after proper treatment.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To compare CT and US features of immature and mature teratomas of the ovary. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed CT and US findings of 11 patients with immature teratoma and 18 patients(20 cases) with mature teratoma. The tumors were classified into three groups on the basis of image findings : predominantlycystic(type I), predominantly solid(type II), and mixed cystic and solid(type III). RESULT: All eleven cases of immature teratoma were of the mixed type(type III), showing multiple small(less than 2 cm) nodular and linear calcifications and fatty nodules within the solid component and adjacent to the septa of the cystic component of the masses. In contrast, mature teratomas were predominantly cystic in six cases, predominantly solid in eight, and mixed in six cases. In five of six mixed type mature teratomes, calcified fatty nodules were fewer and largerthan in immature teratomas. CONCLUSION: Immature teratoma may be diagnosed by the demonstration on CT or US ofmultiple small(less than 2cm) nodular and linear calcifications and fatty nodules in the solid and cystic components of the tumor.
