RESUMO

Cervix cancer is one of the most widespread women's cancers in the world. It is a tumor which can be avoided by the early detection of precancerous lesions using Pap smear, therefore classification of these lesions is important to follow up and manage these cases. the aim is to study the incidence rate of abnormal smears, and its relationship with patient´s complaint and to investigate the statistical significance of the Pap smear as an early detection screening test for cervical cancer. The study was carried out at the Maternity Hospital of Damascus University .400 women were included for Pap Smear test. Results of Pap Smears and histopathology of 40 high risk patients were compared. The results showed that the incidence rate of abnormal smear was 10%, which was higher than the global rates. Vaginal discharge was. The prevalent complaint 47%. The highest rate of abnormal smear was associated with post coitus bleeding 30%. The sensitivity of Pap Smear was 64, 70%, and specificity was 82, 60% Our results confirmed the importance of cervix smear for all women at reproductive age recommended by The American Cancer Society screening program. Also public alert should be raised for cervix cancer early detection by means of public standard for cellular screening program, particularly for high risk women

RESUMO

Cervix cancer is one of the most important gynecological cancers, which is possible to be reduced by using early precancerous detecting technics. The aim of the study is to highlighten the colposcopy as a device for early detection of precancerous lesions in the cervix, and compare the results with histopathology. our study was carried out at the Maternity Hospital of Damascus University from 11212008 to 11612009. 142 cases were included. colposcopy performed for them. Directed biopsy done for 89 patients. We compared the results of colposcopy and histopathology. the incidence rate of abnormal epidermis was 50%, and 52.8% of the patients require serious follow up by biopsy .The sensitivity of this procedure was 97.72%, the specificity was 31.71%. colposcopy is a perfect way to determine cervix lesion morphology, in addition to make directed biopsy to detect the early features of precancerous disease
