RESUMO

PURPOSE: Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a symptom complex of vomiting and diarrhea caused by non-IgE mediated allergy to cow's milk and/or soy in young infants. Transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta has been reported to protect the epithelial barrier of the gut from foreign antigens. We studied the expression of type 1 and 2 TGF-beta receptors in the mucosa of small intestine to investigate their roles in the pathogenesis of FPIES. METHODS: Twenty-eight patients, aged 7 to 120 days (mean 49 days) who were diagnosed with FPIES by clinical criteria and challenge tests were included. Immunohistochemical stainings for type 1 and 2 TGF-beta receptors were performed on endoscopic duodenal biopsy specimens. RESULTS: Type 1 and 2 TGF-beta receptors were expressed in the villous and crypt epithelial cells but nearly absent in the lamina propria in both patients and controls. Type 1 TGF-beta receptor expression was significantly lower in the patients who had villous atrophy than in the patients who had not and in controls. The expression of type 1 TGF-beta receptor was negatively correlated with the severity of villous atrophy. Type 2 TGF-beta receptor expression showed no significant difference between the patients and controls. CONCLUSION: Our results suggests that the decreased activity of type 1 TGF-beta receptor is implicated in the pathogenesis of FPIES in young infants.

RESUMO

Metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma of the ovary is an extremely rare ovarian tumors and may cause a diagnostic problem. This tumor was first described by Ooartman and Elliot in 1983. The differential diagnosis in cases of hepatocellular carcinoma metastatic to the ovary is with primary and metastatic hepatoid tumors of the ovary and diverse other tumors of the ovary composed of oxyphil cells, which may be primary or metastatic. We have experienced one case of metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma of the ovary with brief review of the literature.

RESUMO

OBJECT: To support the application of the Bethesda classification to the histologic diagnosis of cervical squamous lesions. METHODS: We evaluated the cervical biopsies and human papilloma virus (HPV) DNA status of 100 clinic patients. The 100 biopsy specimens were analyzed using criteria of the Bethesda system for low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion(LSIL) and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions(HSIL) in association with analysis of HPV DNA virus type by PCR. RESULTS: By PCR amplified from paraffin embedded tissues, the 40 of 90 cases of classified as HSIL were HPV 16 or 18 positive and 1/10 cases of classified as LSIL was HPV 16 positive. CONCLUSION: This study supports the usefullness of certain histologic criteria of the Bethesda system for distinguishing squamous intraepithelial lesions into two grades.

RESUMO

To evaluate correlation between the expression of neu and ras oncoprotein and epidermal growth factor receptor on breast carcinoma and other known prognostic factors, immunohisto-chemical studies were performed. Positive reaction for neu, which appeared as brown granular deposits along cell surface and cytoplasm of the tumor cells, was significantly correlated with the histological grade but not with other prognostic factors such as tumor size, lymph node me-tastasis, local recurrence, and estrogen and progesteron receptor status. Also granular deposits of ras were noted in the carcinoma cells in the cytoplasm, while the epithelaial cells of the normal lobule and duct showed negative reation. But expression of ras was not significantly associated ras with other prognostic factors. The reaction for EGFR was mostly negative on epithelial cells of both the normal lobule and duct, and was not significantly associated with other prognostic factors. The results suggested that expression of the neu oncoprotein is significantly associated with the histological grade of breast carcinoma, while the ras and the EGFR do not show significant prognostic value.

RESUMO

Malignant lymphomas of the upper respiratory tract are relatively common in the Orient including Korea. They have a marked clinicopathologic and immunophenotypic diversity. We retrospectively reviewed 20 cases of malignant lymphomas with features of polymorphic reticulosis in the upper respiratory tract. Histopathologic findings consisted of polymorphism of lymphoid cells in 17 cases(85%), angiocentricity in 14 cases(70%), coagulation necrosis in 12 cases(60%), and epitheliotropism in 8 cases(40%). By Working Formulation, 14 cases(70%) were classified as diffuse large cell type, 4 cases(20%) as diffuse mixed small cleaved and large cell type, one case as immunoblastic type, and one case as anaplastic large cell type. On immunostaining, one showed B-cell phenotype and 19 cases showed T-cell phenotype. The B-cell type was histologically diffuse large cell type. From these results, we concluded that polymorphic reticulosis is a type of peripheral T-cell lymphoma with angiocentricity.
