Evaluación de la calidad universitaria: pasado y presente en la búsqueda de la excelencia académica / Evaluation of university quality: past and present in the pursuit of academic excellence

Fundamento: desde sus inicios, la Revolución cubana estimuló la excelencia académica en sus universidades, lo cual constituyó uniformidad en el discurso y accionar de funcionarios del Ministerio de Educación Superior. Objetivo: caracterizar la evaluación de la calidad universitaria como vía para el logro de la excelencia académica en diferentes momentos históricos de la Revolución cubana. Métodos: se realizó una investigación cualitativa en la Universidad de Ciencias Médicas de Villa Clara, en septiembre 2023. Se utilizaron métodos teóricos: histórico-lógico, análisis-síntesis y generalización; empíricos: análisis documental y entrevista a informantes clave. Resultados: se analizaron varias intervenciones de funcionarios del Ministerio de Educación Superior que fueron estableciendo una política vinculada hacia la búsqueda de la excelencia académica universitaria en Cuba, las que unidas a criterios de estudiosos latinoamericanos fueron conformando un tránsito hacia procesos de evaluación estipulados por la Junta de Acreditación Nacional, en los cuales se evalúa la calidad universitaria a partir de la acreditación y reacreditación de sus instituciones. Los informantes clave confirmaron la validez de estos procesos en el contexto de la Universidad de Ciencias Médicas de Villa Clara. Conclusiones: los conceptos de universidad y calidad se han ido modificando a través de la vida revolucionaria cubana; expresados en el vínculo constante con la sociedad, los valores humanistas del pueblo y su tradición de lucha. La universidad debe estar inmersa en un ambiente de búsqueda de su pertinencia y calidad; de ahí la importancia de implicarse en procesos de evaluación y revaluación por la Junta Nacional de Acreditación.

Background: from its beginnings, the Cuban Revolution stimulated academic excellence in its universities, which constituted uniformity in the speech and actions of officials of the Ministry of Higher Education. Objective: analyze the involvement of the Cuban Revolution in the search for academic excellence and its derivation towards university accreditation and reaccreditation processes. Methods: a qualitative investigation was carried out at Villa Clara University of Medical Sciences , in September 2023. Theoretical methods were used: historical-logical, analysis-synthesis and generalization; Empirical ones: documentary analysis and interviews with key informants. Results: several interventions by officials of the Ministry of Higher Education were analyzed that were shaping and establishing a policy linked to the search for university academic excellence in Cuba, which, together with criteria from Latin American scholars, were granting a transition towards evaluation processes stipulated by the National Accreditation Board, in which university quality is strengthened through the accreditation and reaccreditation of its institutions. Key informants confirmed the validity of these processes, in the context of the Villa Clara University of Medical Sciences. Conclusions: the concepts of university and quality have been modified throughout Cuban revolutionary life; expressed in the constant link with society, the humanist values of the people and their tradition of struggle. The university must be immersed in an environment of search for its relevance and quality; hence its importance of getting involved in evaluation and reevaluation processes by the National Accreditation Board.

Obra pictórica de Frida Kahlo: refugio artístico contra el dolor y la soledad / The pictorial work of Frida Kahlo: an artistic refuge against pain and solitude

RESUMEN Frida Kahlo, personalidad de las artes plásticas mexicanas, efectuó contribuciones significativas a la cultura universal sobreponiéndose a enfermedades y penurias que marcaron su existencia. Es propósito de las autoras destacar las facetas fundamentales de su individualidad particularizando en los aspectos que demuestran su lugar en la historia de México, a través de su creación artística y el vínculo que como paciente establece con el ejercicio de la Medicina. La revisión bibliográfica realizada permitió aseverar su trascendencia a partir de la defensa que hace del folclore de su país frente a los modelos europeos tradicionales.

ABSTRACT Frida Kahlo, personality of the Mexican plastic arts, made significant contributions to the universal culture overcoming to illnesses and penuries that marked her existence. It is the authors' purpose to highlight the fundamental facets of her individuality particularizing in the aspects that demonstrate her place in the history of Mexico, through her artistic creation and the links that she establishes with the exercise of Medicine as a patient. This bibliographical review allowed asserting her transcendence through the defense she makes of the folklore of her country in front of the traditional European models.

Reseña histórica de egresados en la Universidad de Ciencias Médicas de Villa Clara. (1968-2010) / Historical review of the graduated students in Villa Clara University of Medical Sciences. (1968-2010)

El trabajo procura caracterizar el comportamiento de la culminación de estudios del capital humano en la Universidad de Ciencias Médicas de Villa Clara entre los años 1968 y 2010, como expresión de toda la trayectoria de este alto centro de estudios. El trabajo incluye información referida no solo a los estudiantes cubanos, sino también a los graduados de la Escuela de Medicina Latinoamericana (ELAM), del continente africano y estudiantes de otros orígenes geográficos. En este sentido, el estudio aporta elementos para medir la contribución de la citada institución en las prácticas solidarias que han permitido graduar en Cuba a miles de profesionales de la salud, preferentemente de países hermanos del Tercer Mundo. Esta memoria se apoya en el análisis de rigurosos conteos estadísticos reflejados en documentos de la Secretaría General de la Universidad, con la aspiración de proporcionar al usuario herramientas objetivas para apreciar los resultados de su devenir histórico.

The purpose of this work is to review the behavior of the human resources that have finished their studies in Villa Clara University of Medical Sciences from 1968 to 2010, the information that this work contains not only includes Cuban students but also about graduates from the Latin-American School of Medicine, the African continent as well as other parts of the world. This study possesses elements to measure the contribution of this institution to the solidaristic practices which have permitted to graduate thousands of health professionals in Cuba, preferably from fellow third world countries. This memory is based on the analysis of rigorous statistic counting reflected in documents of the General Secretariat of the university, with the aspiration to facilitate an objective tool to the users to appreciate the outcomes of the historical evolution.
