Background and Objectives@#Nonpharmacologic interventions (NPIs), such as social distancing and preventive measures, were administered during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, which may influence the incidence of upper respiratory diseases (URDs). The present study compared the incidence of URDs during the COVID-19 pandemic and during the years prior to COVID-19, and investigated the effect of NPIs on URD in the nationwide general population.Subjects and Method This is an epidemiologic study based on the Korean National Health Insurance Database from March 2016 to February 2021. We compared the monthly incidence of URDs from March 2020 to February 2021 (12 months) with that of the past four years. A negative binomial regression model was used to evaluate the annual difference in the incidence of each URD and adjusting temperature, humidity, and the level of particulate matter 10 (PM10). @*Results@#The monthly incidence of ‘the five common URDs’ in 2020 was significantly lower than that in the past four years. The incidence of other chronic diseases, however, such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus, was comparable or higher in the past four years. Among the five common URDs, influenza virus infections decreased most dramatically, nearing 99%, from 296.4-377.1 per 100000 people during the period of 2016 to 2019 to 3.7 per 100000 people in 2020. @*Conclusion@#The present study shows that the incidence of ‘five common URDs’ significantly decreased during the era of COVID-19 in Korea. We believe that nationwide NPI might prevent the transmission of COVID-19 as well as other infectious sources associated with URDs.

Purpose@#Glioblastoma (GBM) is one of the most lethal human tumors with a highly infiltrative phenotype. Our previous studies showed that GBM originates in the subventricular zone, and that tumor-derived mesenchymal stem-like cells (tMSLCs) promote the invasiveness of GBM tumorspheres (TSs). Here, we extend these studies in terms of ventricles using several types of GBM patient-derived cells. @*Materials and Methods@#The invasiveness of GBM TSs and ventricle spheres (VSs) were quantified via collagen-based 3D invasion assays. Gene expression profiles were obtained from microarray data. A mouse orthotopic xenograft model was used for in vivo experiments. @*Results@#After molecular and functional characterization of ventricle-derived mesenchymal stem-like cells (vMSLCs), we investigated the effects of these cells on the invasiveness of GBM TSs. We found that vMSLC-conditioned media (CM) significantly accelerated the invasiveness of GBM TSs and VSs, compared to the control and even tMSLC-CM. Transcriptome analyses revealed that vMSLC secreted significantly higher levels of several invasiveness-associated cytokines. Moreover, differentially expressed genes between vMSLCs and tMSLCs were enriched for migration, adhesion, and chemotaxis-related gene sets, providing a mechanistic basis for vMSLC-induced invasion of GBM TSs. In vivo experiments using a mouse orthotopic xenograft model confirmed vMSLCinduced increases in the invasiveness of GBM TSs. @*Conclusion@#Although vMSLCs are non-tumorigenic, this study adds to our understanding of how GBM cells acquire infiltrative features by vMSLCs, which are present in the region where GBM genesis originates.

Background@#Pitavastatin is a cholesterol-lowering drug and is widely used clinically. In addition to this effect, pitavastatin has shown the potential to induce apoptosis in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) cells. @*Objective@#The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects and possible action mechanisms of pitavastatin. @*Methods@#SCC cells (SCC12 and SCC13 cells) were treated with pitavastatin, and induction of apoptosis was confirmed by Western blot. To examine whether pitavastatin-induced apoptosis is related to a decrease in the amount of intermediate mediators in the cholesterol synthesis pathway, the changes in pitavastatin-induced apoptosis after supplementation with mevalonate, squalene, geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate (GGPP) and dolichol were investigated. @*Results@#Pitavastatin dose-dependently induced apoptosis of cutaneous SCC cells, but the viability of normal keratinocytes was not affected by pitavastatin at the same concentrations. In supplementation experiments, pitavastatin-induced apoptosis was inhibited by the addition of mevalonate or downstream metabolite GGPP. As a result of examining the effect on intracellular signaling, pitavastatin decreased Yes1 associated transcriptional regulator and Ras homolog family member A and increased Rac family small GTPase 1 and c-Jun Nterminal kinase (JNK) activity. All these effects of pitavastatin on signaling molecules were restored when supplemented with either mevalonate or GGPP. Furthermore, pitavastatininduced apoptosis of cutaneous SCC cells was inhibited by a JNK inhibitor. @*Conclusion@#These results suggest that pitavastatin induces apoptosis of cutaneous SCC cells through GGPP-dependent JNK activation.

RESUMO

Nodular melanoma is a malignant melanoma which presents as blackish-brown or colorless nodules. Nodular melanoma shows rapid growth compared to other melanoma subtypes, and often exhibits clinical features that do not correspond to the ABCD rules, which is key in differentiating melanoma. This makes nodular melanoma difficult to differentiate from the initially suspected melanoma. As such, diagnosis of nodular melanoma is commonly delayed, and is therefore often identified at an advanced stage. Here, we report a case of nodular melanoma in a young man with a family history of melanoma. We emphasize the importance of early diagnosis through biopsy for malignant melanoma, which is difficult to differentiate based on clinical features.

Background/Aims@#Food retention, which is a characteristic observed in patients with achalasia, can interfere with peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM).However, there is no established guideline for esophageal preparation for POEM. A previous study has shown that drinking warmwater may reduce the lower esophageal sphincter pressure in patients with achalasia. This study aims to evaluate the possibility ofproper preparation of POEM by instructing the patient to drink warm water. @*Methods@#The warm water preparation was performed in 29 patients with achalasia who underwent POEM. The patients drank 1 L of warm water (60 o C) the night before POEM. We evaluated the esophageal clearness and determined the preparation quality. Twenty-nine patients were prospectively recruited and compared to control group. The control cohort comprised achalasia patients whoseendoscopic image was available from the achalasia database of our institution. A 1:2 propensity score-matched control cohort was established from the database of achalasia subjects (n = 155) to compare the outcome of the preparation. @*Results@#In the warm water preparation group, only 1 patient (3.4%) had some solid retention, but it did not interfere with the POEM procedure. The grade of clearness (P = 0.016) and quality of preparation (P < 0.001) were significantly better in the warm water preparation group than in the matched control group. There was no any adverse event at all related to warm water preparation protocol. @*Conclusions@#Drinking warm water dramatically reduces esophageal food retention and significantly improves the quality of esophageal preparation.This simple protocol is quite useful, safe, and cost-effective in the preparation of achalasia patients for POEM.

Background@#Long-term growth data of very low birth weight (VLBW) infants are currently collected in the Korean Neonatal Network (KNN) and National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) database. However, variance in the number of infants, check-up time, and check-up parameters led to decreased credibility of cumulated data. We aimed to compare the data on serial growth outcomes by major morbidities from birth to 5 years in VLBW infants between the KNN and NHIS databases. @*Methods@#We combined the NHIS and KNN data of VLBW infants born between 2013 and 2015. The check-up times in the NHIS database were at 4–6, 9–12, 18–24, 30–36, 42–48, and 54–60 months of age, whereas in the KNN were at 18–24 months of corrected age and at 36 months of age.Result: Among 8,864 VLBW infants enrolled based on the birth certificates from the Statistics Korea, 6,086 infants (69%) were enrolled in the KNN, and 5,086 infants (57%) participated in the NHIS health check-up. Among 6,068 infants, 3,428 infants (56%) were enrolled at a corrected age of 18–24 months and 2,572 infants (42%) were enrolled at a chronological age of 33–36 months according to the KNN follow-up registry. However, based on the national birth statistics data, the overall follow-up rate of the KNN at 36 months of age was as low as 29%. The NHIS screening rate was lower at first (23%); however, it increased over time to exceed the KNN follow-up rate. Growth failure (weight under 10th percentile) at corrected ages of 18–24 months and 36 months were more common in the NHIS than KNN (42% vs. 20%, 37% vs. 34.5%). Infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia and periventricular leukomalacia showed similar rates of growth failure at 2 years but varying rates at 3 years between the KNN and NHIS. @*Conclusion@#By integrating the KNN and NHIS data indirectly at continuous time points according to morbidities, we found that there are discontinuities and discrepancies between the two databases among VLBW infants. Establishing an integrated system by patient level linking the KNN and NHIS databases can lead to better understanding and improved neonatal outcomes in VLBW infants in Korea.

Background@#Fibroblasts produce collagen molecules that support the structure of the skin.The decrease and hypersynthesis of collagen causes skin problems such as skin atrophy, wrinkles and scars. @*Objective@#The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanism of mitoxantrone on collagen synthesis in fibroblasts. @*Methods@#Cultured fibroblasts were treated with mitoxantrone, and then collagen synthesis was confirmed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and Western blot. @*Results@#Mitoxantrone inhibited the expression of type I collagen in fibroblasts at both the mRNA and protein levels. In the collagen gel contraction assay, mitoxantrone significantly inhibited gel contraction compared to the control group. Mitoxantrone inhibited transforming growth factor (TGF)-β-induced phosphorylation of SMAD3. Finally, mitoxantrone inhibited the expression of LARP6, an RNA-binding protein that regulates collagen mRNA stability. @*Conclusion@#These results suggest that mitoxantrone reduces collagen synthesis by inhibiting TGF-β/SMAD signaling and LARP6 expression in fibroblasts, which can be developed as a therapeutic agent for diseases caused by collagen hypersynthesis.

Renal myxomas are very rare benign tumors. To date, a few cases have been reported in English literature, mostly in pathology and urology journals. Thus, there are few reports on the radiological findings associated with renal myxomas. We report on the imaging findings in a case of renal myxoma in a 62-year-old male. MRI demonstrated a well-defined mass in the left renal sinus, with intermediate high signal intensity on T2-weighted images and low signal intensity on T1-weighted images. The tumor showed gradual enhancement on contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images.

Background@#and Purpose: In this study we aimed to find the association between neuropsychological performance and body mass index (BMI) in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). In addition, we investigated the effects of the apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype in the relationship between the BMI and cognition in MCI. @*Methods@#We enrolled a cohort of 3,038 subjects with MCI aged 65–90 from the Clinical Research Center for Dementia of South Korea and a dementia cohort of the Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital. MCI patients were classified into three subgroups according to the Asian standard of BMI. We compared cognitive performances between groups by one-way analysis of variance. To investigate the effects of the APOE genotype, we used multivariate linear regression models after adjusting for possible confounders. @*Results@#Even though normal BMI groups were younger, had more females, and had less comorbidities, the higher BMI groups had better cognitive functions. Among subjects with APOE ε4 carriers, there was a positive relationship between the BMI and the memory task alone. @*Conclusions@#Our findings suggested that higher BMI in patients with MCI were associated with better cognitive performance. The effects of the APOE ε4 genotype in the associations between BMI and cognition were distinguishing. Therefore, according to physical status, APOE ε4 genotype-specific strategies in the assessments and treatments may be necessary in elderly patients with MCI.

Mandibular implant overdenture is a good treatment option for complete edentulous patients with restoring removable prosthesis. Mandibular implant overdenture with two implants and locator attachments is widely used. It is tissue-supported overdenture that is made with the concept of conventional complete denture fabrication. There are two patients who provided impressions by open mouth technique and closed mouth technique in each case. In both cases, mandibular implant overdentures were restored with functionally and aesthetically satisfying results.

Purpose@#The aims of the study were to develop and evaluate a machine learning model with which to predict postnatal growth failure (PGF) among very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. @*Materials and Methods@#Of 10425 VLBW infants registered in the Korean Neonatal Network between 2013 and 2017, 7954 infants were included. PGF was defined as a decrease in Z score >1.28 at discharge, compared to that at birth. Six metrics [area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC), accuracy, precision, sensitivity, specificity, and F1 score] were obtained at five time points (at birth, 7 days, 14 days, 28 days after birth, and at discharge). Machine learning models were built using four different techniques [extreme gradient boosting (XGB), random forest, support vector machine, and convolutional neural network] to compare against the conventional multiple logistic regression (MLR) model. @*Results@#The XGB algorithm showed the best performance with all six metrics across the board. When compared with MLR, XGB showed a significantly higher AUROC (p=0.03) for Day 7, which was the primary performance metric. Using optimal cut-off points, for Day 7, XGB still showed better performances in terms of AUROC (0.74), accuracy (0.68), and F1 score (0.67). AUROC values seemed to increase slightly from birth to 7 days after birth with significance, almost reaching a plateau after 7 days after birth. @*Conclusion@#We have shown the possibility of predicting PGF through machine learning algorithms, especially XGB. Such models may help neonatologists in the early diagnosis of high-risk infants for PGF for early intervention.

Palisaded neutrophilic and granulomatous dermatitis (PNGD) is an uncommon skin eruption and characterized histopathologically by the presence of granulomatous inflammation with or without leukocytoclastic vasculitis. PNGD is known to be associated with various immune-mediated connective tissue diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus erythematosus. However, to our knowledge, a case of PNGD in a patient with Behçet’s disease is extremely rare and only one case has been reported in foreign literature to date. Herein, we report an unusual case of a 60-year-old female with Behçet’s disease who presented multiple erythematous to flesh-colored papules on the extremities, buttocks, and ear lobes and was diagnosed with PNGD. After the treatment of systemic corticosteroids, colchicine and azathioprine, the skin lesions and oral ulcers improved. The patient is under observation without recurrence of skin lesions for 6 months.

Background@#Macrosomia, as an infant with birth weight over 4 kg, can have several perinatal, and neonatal complications. This study aimed to estimate the incidence of macrosomia in Korea and to identify the growth and developmental outcomes and other neonatal complications. @*Methods@#In total, 397,203 infants who were born in 2013 with birth weight ≥ 2.5 kg and who underwent infant health check-up between their 1 st and 7 th visit were included from the National Health Insurance Service database. The information was obtained by the International Classification of Diseases-10 codes or self-reported questionnaires in the National Health Screening Program. @*Results@#The distribution of infants by birth weight was as follows: 384,181 (97%) infants in the 2.5–3.99 kg (reference) group, 12,016 (3%) infants in the 4.0–4.49 kg group, 772 (0.2%) infants in the 4.5–4.99 kg group, and 78 (0.02%) infants in the ≥ 5 kg group. Macrosomia showed significantly higher incidence of sepsis, male sex, and mothers with GDM and birth injury. There was a significant difference in weight, height, and head circumference according to age, birth weight group, and combination of age and birth weight, respectively (P < 0.001). The number of infants with the weight above the 90 th percentile in macrosomia at each health check-up showed higher incidence than in reference group. The mean body mass index significantly differed among the groups, as 50.6 in infants with 2.5–3.99 kg of birth weight, 63.5 with 4.0–4.49 kg, 71.0 with 4.5–4.99 kg, and 73.1 with ≥ 5 kg. There was a significant difference in the incidence of poor developmental results between infants with macrosomia and the reference group at 24, 36 and 48 month of age. @*Conclusion@#Macrosomia was significantly associated with the risk of sepsis, birth injury, obesity and developmental problem especially in a boy born from mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus. Careful monitoring and proper strategies for monitoring growth and development are needed.

Purpose@#Acute kidney injury (AKI) in cancer patients is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The incidence of AKI in lung cancer seems to be relatively higher compared with other solid organ malignancies, although its impact on patient outcomes remains unclear. @*Materials and Methods@#The patients newly diagnosed with lung cancer from 2004 to 2013 were enrolled in this retrospective cohort study. The patients were categorized according to the presence and severity of AKI. We compared all-cause mortality and long-term renal outcome according to AKI stage. @*Results@#A total of 3,202 patients were included in the final analysis. AKI occurred in 1,783 (55.7%) patients during the follow-up period, with the majority having mild AKI stage 1 (75.8%). During the follow-up of 2.6±2.2 years, total 1,251 patients (53.7%) were died and 5-year survival rate was 46.9%. We found that both AKI development and severity were independent risk factors for all-cause mortality in lung cancer patients, even after adjustment for lung cancer-specific variables including the stage or pathological type. In addition, patients suffered from more severe AKI tend to encounter de novo chronic kidney disease development, worsening kidney function, and end-stage kidney disease progression. @*Conclusion@#In this study, more than half of the lung cancer patients experienced AKI during their diagnosis and treatment period. Moreover, AKI occurrence and more advanced AKI were associated with a higher mortality risk and adverse kidney outcomes.

Purpose@#A critical indicator of the overall survival of patients with high-grade glioma is the successful isolation of tumor mesenchymal stem-like cells (tMSLCs), which play important roles in glioma progression. However, attempts to isolate tMSLCs from surgical specimens have not always been successful, and the reasons for this remain unclear. Considering that the amount of surgical high-grade glioma specimens varies, we hypothesized that larger surgical specimens would be better for tMSLC isolation. @*Materials and Methods@#We assessed 51 fresh, high-grade glioma specimens and divided them into two groups according to the success or failure of tMSLC isolation. The success of tMSLC isolation was confirmed by plastic adherence, presenting antigens, tri-lineage differentiation, and non-tumorigenicity. Differences in characteristics between the two groups were tested using independent two sample t-tests, chi-square tests, or Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. @*Results@#The mean specimen weights of the groups differed from each other (tMSLC-negative group: 469.9±341.9 mg, tMSLC positive group: 546.7±618.9 mg), but the difference was not statistically significant. The optimal cut-off value of specimen weight was 180 mg, and the area under the curve value was 0.599. @*Conclusion@#Our results suggested a minimum criterion for specimen collection, and found that the specimen amount was not deeply related to tMSLC detection. Collectively, our findings imply that the ability to isolate tMSLCs is determined by factors other than the specimen amount.

Purpose@#The prevalence and incidence of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) are increasing worldwide. Despite increased understanding of inflammatory pathogenesis, changes in endoscopic features after treatment of EoE have not been clearly described.We aimed to investigate the reversibility of endoscopic features of EoE after treatment. @*Materials and Methods@#Out of 58 adult subjects who were diagnosed with EoE at the Yonsei University Health System from July 2006 to August 2019, we recruited 33 subjects (30 males; mean age: 42 years) whose pre-treatment and post-treatment endoscopic images were available. Endoscopic features included both inflammatory and fibrostenotic features. Exudate, edema, furrow, and crepe paper-like mucosa were classified as inflammatory features. Ring and stricture were classified as fibrostenotic features. We compared changes in endoscopic features after treatment for EoE. @*Results@#After treatment, clinical symptoms improved in all patients. The following endoscopic features were observed before treatment: furrow (81.8%), edema (90.9%), exudate (42.4%), ring (27.3%), crepe paper-like mucosa (15.2%), and stricture (3.0%).Endoscopic remission was achieved in 21 patients (63.6%). Inflammatory features were reversible (72.7%, p<0.001), whereas fibrostenotic features were not (10%, p=0.160). Exudate had resolved in 92.9% of patients, edema in 70% and furrow in 88.9%. Ring and stricture persisted in almost all of the patients (9/10) who had these endoscopic features before treatment. @*Conclusion@#We outlined the reversibility of endoscopic inflammatory features of EoE. Fibrostenotic features were irreversible after esophageal remodeling in patients with EoE. However, further validation studies with long-term follow-up are needed.

Purpose@#Children have few small alveoli, which reduce lung compliance; in contrast, their cartilaginous rib cage makes their chest wall highly compliant. This combination promotes lung collapse. Prolonged inspiratory to expiratory (I:E) ratio ventilation is used to optimize gas exchange and respiratory mechanics in surgery. However, the optimal ratio is unclear in children. We hypothesized that, compared to a 1:2 I:E ratio, a 1:1 I:E ratio would improve dynamic compliance and oxygenation, and affect the peak airway pressure in pediatric patients undergoing surgery. @*Materials and Methods@#Forty-eight patients aged ≤6 years who were scheduled to undergo surgery under general anesthesia with an arterial line were randomly allocated to receive 1:1 (group 1:1) or 1:2 (group 1:2) I:E ratio ventilation. Airway pressure, respiratory system compliance, and arterial blood gas analyses were compared between groups immediately after induction (T0), 30 min after induction (T1), 60 min after induction (T2), immediately after surgery (T3), and on arrival at the post-anesthesia care unit (T4). @*Results@#Peak and plateau airway pressures were significantly lower in group 1:1 than in group 1:2 at T1 (p=0.044 and 0.048, respectively). The dynamic and static compliances were significantly higher in group 1:1 than in group 1:2 at T1 (p=0.044 and 0.045, respectively). However, the partial pressure of oxygen did not significantly differ between groups. @*Conclusion@#Compared to a 1:2 I:E ratio, a 1:1 I:E ratio improved dynamic compliance and lowered the peak airway pressure without complications in pediatric patients. Nevertheless, our results do not support its use solely for improving oxygenation.

Background/Aims@#Multi-drug resistant pathogens are increasing among healthcare-associated infections. It is well known that copper and copper alloys have antimicrobial activity. We evaluated the activity of copper against bacteria in a hospital setting in Korea. @*Methods@#This study was conducted in a laboratory and medical intensive care unit (ICU). Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE) were inoculated onto copper, copper alloy and stainless steel plates. After 24 hours of incubation, colony-forming units (CFU) were counted in the laboratory. Two similar rooms were chosen in the ICU; one room had copper-containing surface, and the other room contained items with a stainless steel surfaces. Items were sampled weekly for 8 weeks when the rooms were not crowded and when the rooms were busier with healthcare workers or visitors. @*Results@#In vitro time-kill curves showed copper or, a copper alloy yielded a significant reduction in MRSA and VRE CFUs over 15 minutes. Upon exposure to stainless steel plates, CFUs were slowly reduced for 24 hours. In vivo, MRSA CFUs were lower in rooms with copper-containing surfaces compared with controls, both after cleaning and after patients had received visitors (p < 0.05). Analysis of VRE revealed similar results, but VRE CFUs from copper-containing surfaces of drug carts in the ICU did not decrease significantly. @*Conclusions@#Copper has antimicrobial activity and appears to reduce the number of multi-drug resistant microorganisms in a hospital environment. This finding suggests the potential of the use of copper fittings, instruments and surfaces in hospital.

Objective@#To assess the safety and clinical efficacy of percutaneous transhepatic enteral stent placement for recurrent malignant obstruction in patients with surgically altered bowel anatomy. @*Materials and Methods@#Between July 2009 and May 2019, 36 patients (27 men and 9 women; mean age, 62.7 ± 12.0 years) underwent percutaneous transhepatic stent placement for recurrent malignant bowel obstruction after surgery. In all patients, conventional endoscopic peroral stent placement failed due to altered bowel anatomy. The stent was placed with a transhepatic approach for an afferent loop obstruction (n = 27) with a combined transhepatic and peroral approach for simultaneous stent placement in afferent and efferent loop obstruction (n = 9). Technical and clinical success, complications, stent patency, and patient survival were retrospectively evaluated. @*Results@#The stent placement was technically successful in all patients. Clinical success was achieved in 30 patients (83.3%). Three patients required re-intervention (balloon dilatation [n = 1] and additional stent placement [n = 2] for insufficient stent expansion). Major complications included transhepatic access-related perihepatic biloma (n = 2), hepatic artery bleeding (n = 2), bowel perforation (n = 1), and sepsis (n = 1). The 3- and 12-months stent patency and patient survival rates were 91.2%, 66.5% and 78.9%, 47.9%, respectively. @*Conclusion@#Percutaneous enteral stent placement using transhepatic access for recurrent malignant obstruction in patients with surgically altered bowel anatomy is safe and clinically efficacious. Transhepatic access is a good alternative route for afferent loop obstruction and can be combined with a peroral approach for simultaneous afferent and efferent loop obstruction.

Objective@#To determine the association of macrocalcification and rim calcification with malignancy and to stratify the malignancy risk of thyroid nodules with macrocalcification and rim calcification based on ultrasound (US) patterns. @*Materials and Methods@#The study included a total of 3603 consecutive nodules (≥ 1 cm) with final diagnoses. The associations of macrocalcification and rim calcification with malignancy and malignancy risk of the nodules were assessed overall and in subgroups based on the US patterns of the nodules. The malignancy risk of the thyroid nodules was categorized as high (> 50%), intermediate (upper-intermediate: > 30%, ≤ 50%; lower-intermediate: > 10%, ≤ 30%), and low (≤ 10%). @*Results@#Macrocalcification was independently associated with malignancy in all nodules and solid hypoechoic (SH) nodules (p < 0.001). Rim calcification was not associated with malignancy in all nodules (p = 0.802); however, it was independently associated with malignancy in partially cystic or isoechoic and hyperechoic (PCIH) nodules (p = 0.010). The malignancy risks of nodules with macrocalcification were classified as upper-intermediate and high in SH nodules, and as low and lowerintermediate in PCIH nodules based on suspicious US features. The malignancy risks of nodules with rim calcification were stratified as low and lower-intermediate based on suspicious US features. @*Conclusion@#Macrocalcification increased the malignancy risk in all and SH nodules with or without suspicious US features, with low to high malignancy risks depending on the US patterns. Rim calcification increased the malignancy risk in PCIH nodules, with low and lower-intermediate malignancy risks based on suspicious US features. However, the role of rim calcification in risk stratification of thyroid nodules remains uncertain.
