RESUMO

The arterial carbon dioxide partial pressure (Pco2) & pH are basic indices of the adequacy of ventilation in anesthetized patients. Obstacles to the use of these indices intraoperatively are the inconvenience and risks associated with obtaining arterial blood, especially in the infant. Venous blood samples may be obtained conveniently, repeatedly and without additional hazard. If venous rather than arterial blood could be used for indirect estimation of pH and PaCO2, it would encourage the use of such measurements. Venous blood drawn from back of the hand or distal third of forearm is derived principally from cutaneous blood flow, which is usually increased by general anesthesia or local heating. This study compares the values for Pco2, pH and O2 saturation of blood samples drawn from a radial or femoral artery and a vein on the back of hand during general anesthesia, preanesthesia and postanesthesia in recovery room.

RESUMO

Traumatic granuloma of the larynx is a localized inflammatory response to the loss of mucosa caused by laryngeal trauma. Endotracheal intubation is the most common cause of traumatic granuloma. The granuloma arises from the vocal process of the arythenoid. Recently we experienced four cases of laryngeal intubation granuloma in Hanyang Medical Center. The microhistologic study confirmed granulomatous polyps of the larynx.

RESUMO

Therapeutic acupuncture and moxibustion has been used succesfully in China for the management of pain for 4,000 to 5,000 years. A upuncture has also been used for a long time to treat various conditions of pain in our country. Although acupuncture is not yet a widely accepting medical procedure in the western world, a number of well documented experimental and clinical reports have indicated that analgesia can be produced by acupuncture stimulation technique. Thirty-two patients received a total of 180 aeupuncture treatements including GDAP, REPP, Head, Auricle and Attachement of metal particles during a three month period in the Hanyang Medical Center. Upon completion of the acupuncture therapy, nineteen patients(59.4%) showed marked improvement. In terms of conditions treated, best results were obtained in patients with musculoskeletal disorders of the head, neck, shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle, back pain, and insommnia with headache. Furthermore, there were no adverse effects except general fatigue in young and hypersensitive patients. Thus, it is believed that further research in this area will improve the chance of understanding pain mechanisms and providing effective methods for pain control.

RESUMO

This is a preliminary report on a method of evaluating recovery from general anesthesia with fifty-four randomly selected anesthetized patients in the Hanyang Medical Center. This method is usefull not only for the reduction of post-anesthetic complications in the recovery room, but is also an excellent training program for residents, interns and nurses in recovery room duties. It is a simple, direct, self-performance, objective test with pencil and paper to measure recovery from general anesthesia. Since this test measures sensory and paychomotor performances, it is valuable as a critical determinant of recovery from anesthesia. Even though this method has several variables dependent upon individual operator skill and tenhicque with regard to surgical procedures and medications administered, it provides an excellent measure of recovery from clinical general anesthesia and may also serve as a medicolegal record for one-day surgical out-patients.
