RESUMO

Purpose@#: Interviews between the coordinator and the family of the brain dead for organ and tissue donation have a great impact on the increase in the consent rate of organ donation. It is necessary to find out empirically the factors for building a mutually respectful and reciprocal relationship in the interview between the coordinator and the family from the perspective of the research subject. @*Methods@#: This study is a qualitative study, and data were collected through in-depth interviews with 10 coordinators of the Korea Organ Donation Agency. The collected data were analyzed by two steps of text analysis and meaning reconstruction. @*Results@#: The relationship building factors between the coordinator and the family of the brain dead analyzed in this study include ‘establishing trust, helping the family, empathy, active listening, friendliness, non-burdening, cautious approach, and sincerity’. Coordinators conducted interviews to deliver information to the family of the brain dead, sincerely and carefully through sympathy and listening, while working for the family at the same time. In these interviews, non-verbal and quasi-verbal communication as well as verbal expressions was actively used. @*Conclusion@#: The results of this study can be used for communication training of organ procurement coordinators.

RESUMO

Purpose@#The aim of this study was to analyze changes in stump length over time in patients with saphenous vein incompetence treated with cyanoacrylate closure (CAC) or radiofrequency ablation (RFA). @*Materials and Methods@#We retrospectively analyzed data collected from patients with saphenous vein incompetence who underwent either CAC or RFA at Seoul National University Hospital between November 2015 and December 2018. The stump lengths were measured using duplex ultrasonography (DUS) within 1 month and 6 months after treatment. The Venous Clinical Severity Score (VCSS) and Aberdeen Varicose Vein Questionnaire (AVVQ) score were used to assess clinical outcomes. @*Results@#A total of 97 veins (64 great saphenous veins and 33 small saphenous veins) were analyzed. The stump length was not significantly different between the two groups at <1 month (P=0.311). However, the stump length in the CAC group was significantly longer than that in the RFA group at 6 months (P=0.004).At 6 months, the mean change in stump length was 1.41±2.28 cm in the CAC group and 0.51±0.54 cm in the RFA group (P=0.006). The VCSSs and AVVQ scores significantly improved after both procedures but were not significantly different between the two groups. @*Conclusion@#DUS at 6 months after treatment showed that the stump length in the CAC group increased more than that in the RFA group. No other factors affected the changes in stump length.

RESUMO

Obesity is a risk factor for numerous health problems. Behavior therapy is important for obesity treatment. The aim of the present study was to identify the parameters that are associated with successful weight reduction. A database of 123 subjects who underwent weight reduction programs at the Center for Health Promotion, Samsung Medical Center from June 2001 through November 2004 was retrospectively analyzed. The goal of the program was to reduce the body weight by more than 5% during the follow-up period. The study population was divided into 2 categories (the success group and the failure group) based on the outcome of weight reduction. We analyzed the demographic, laboratory and clinical parameters to determine the predictors of successful weight reduction. The prevalence of success group was 36.6% (45/123). Significant correlations for successful weight reduction were found for the follow up period and the frequency of medical visits. Our results suggest that strong motivation was the most important factor for successful weight reduction.

RESUMO

This study was designed to compare the performance of liquid-based preparation from the AutoCyte PREP with the conventional cervicovaginal smear in masked split-samples. In randomly selected 840 cases, the conventional smear was always prepared first, and the AutoCyte PREP used the residual cells on the collecting device. Parallel AutoCyte PREP slides and matched conventional smears were screened in a blind fashion. All abnormals and 10% random normal cases were reviewed by two pathologists in a blind fashion. The Bethesda System was used for reporting the diagnosis and specimen adequacy. The diagnoses from the two methods were agreed exactly in 767(91.3%) of 840 cases. The AutoCyte PREP demonstrated a 25% overall improvement in the detection of squamous intraepithelial lesion(SIL). The ratio of ASCUS to SIL was decreased as 0.45 compared with 1.00 of conventional smear. The AutoCyte PREP produced excellent cellular preservation and superior sensitivity for detection of atypical cells as compared to the conventional smear. It makes us to be able to subclassify ASCUS into from WNL to HSIL. We thought that the AutoCyte PREP method might contribute to increase the detection rate of abnormal cells than conventional methods.
