RESUMO

This epidemiological study was carried out on 500 subjects in one of the Rathwania villages, in Baghdad. The CPITN system was used with the WHO probe to establish a base line data on this community. Results of this study showed decreased levels of healthy periodontium with increasing age, with high bleeding on probing [Code 2] that reaches about 30.7 among the people examined, where as, healthy situation [Code 0] was less than other studies done in another countries. It is apparent that due to the low level of awareness of this community to their oral hygiene, high percentage of extracted teeth were noticed with high percentage of periodontal diseases. This picture indicates the necessity to establish a proper oral health program either in the field or through different media

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to investigate the main reason for amalgam replacement in 364 filled teeth due to various factors which causes immediate or future failure of the restoration. A sample of male and female patients attending the clinic of the Department of Operative Dentistry College of Dentistry, University of Baghdad, and regular attendance patients of private clinics. The restored teeth were observed and assessed by using clinical examination instruments and periodical radiographs when required. It was concluded that failure is a multi-factorial property where one enhances the effect of the other. The amalgam filling frequency was reported to be in high percent among the age of 25-35 years. Out of 121 amalgam failures it was higher in female patients 62.8% [76 restorations] then in male patients 37.2% [45 restorations]. Secondary caries leading to replacement of old filling were reported to have the highest percent of 49.6% [60 sites], while fracture was 47.2% [58 sites]. The ratio of amalgam failure among the sample was 1:3
