RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: There are various subtypes in lymphoma of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. This study aimed to compare the clinical differences between NK/T cell lymphoma and B cell lymphoma in the nose and paranasal sinuses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 1991 through 2003, 18 patients were diagnosed with lymphoma by histopathologic biopsy (NK/T cell 13 : B cell 5). We reviewed the medical records retrospectively regarding subjective symptoms, physical findings, and PNS CT findings. RESULTS: The most common symptom of NK/T cell lymphoma was nasal obstruction (8/13), and the main endoscopic finding was ulcerative small lesion. The PNS CT finding of NK/T cell lymphoma was homogenous, poorly enhanced, small mass. In contrast, the most common symptom of B cell lymphoma was periorbital swelling (2/5), and the main endoscopic finding was fungating mass. The PNS CT finding of B cell lymphoma was heterogenous, well-enhanced, large mass with bone destruction. The location of NK/T cell lymphoma was the inferior or middle turbinate in the nasal cavity, whereas the location of B cell lymphoma was the ethmoid or maxillary sinus. CONCLUSION: It is suggested that there may be significant clinical differences between NK/T cell lymphoma and B cell lymphoma in the sinonasal cavity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study attempted to evaluated the bacteriology of the postoperative mucocele of the maxillary sinus. MATERIALS AND METHOD: We performed a retrospective review of intraoperative bacteriology culture results and clinical records of patients with the postoperative mucocele of the maxillary sinus between July 1997 and October 2002. The number of patients was 33 (25 male and 8 female). RESULTS: Cultures were found positive in 20 of 33 patients (61%)(One culture had two organisms). There was no growth in the cultures of 13 patients (39%). The most common organism observed was Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (10 isolates). The mean duration between the previous Caldwell-Luc operation and the second operation was 18.9 years (4-40 years). CONCLUSION: These findings illustrate the bacteriology of the postoperative mucocele of the maxillary sinus and suggest that bacterial infection may play a certain role in the pathogenesis of the postoperative mucocele of the maxillary sinus.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Benign and malignant tumors are occasionally found in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Authors aimed to investigate the incidence and characteristics of benign sino-nasal tumors. MATERIALS AND METHOD: From 1990 through 2002, 197 cases of benign sino-nasal tumors (156 men and 41 women) were diagnosed and managed at the Department of Otolaryngology, Asan Medical Center. We reviewed medical records of patients to find out their presentations, diagnostic considerations, therapeutic options, and outcomes. Patients were followed up sixteen months postoperatively on the average. RESULTS: The most common symptom was nasal obstruction, and the mass was mainly placed in the middle meatus. There were 129 cases (67.2%) of inverted papilloma, 19 cases (9.9%) of osteoma, 13 cases (6.8%) of Angiofibroma, 5 cases (2.6%) of hemangioma. All the tumors were surgically removed, and preoperative embolization was performed only for angiofibroma. For the treatment of inverted papilloma, medial maxillectomy had been the main surgical methods until 1997 (54 cases); however, most cases have been managed with endonasal endoscopic techniques since 1998. Only three patients experienced surgical complications and tumor recurrence was observed in six patients with inverted papilloma associated with carcinoma. CONCLUSION: Inverted papilloma is the most common benign tumor in the sino-nasal tract, followed by osteoma and angiofibroma. Endonasal endoscopic surgery, with its many advantages, may be able to replace the conventional external approach for the treatment of tumors in the sino-nasal tract.
