RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of high school students' mental health on their academic achievement and school dropout rate by using longitudinal data. METHODS: For this study, 153 high schools were randomly sampled on a nationwide scale. The descriptive data was collected from a school information internet site which is organized by the Korean Ministry of Education. We used the schools' mean scores on the Adolescent Mental Health Problem-Behavior Questionnaire-II (AMPQ-II) scale which was used for estimating students' mental health in the 2013 school-based mental health screening test. The data analysis was conducted by using hierarchical regression analysis. RESULTS: The results of this study showed that the AMPQ-II scale's mean scores have significant effects on the following year's academic achievement and annual dropout rates. Especially, the AMPQ-II scale's mean scores tend to increase the school dropout rate in vocational schools. CONCLUSION: The finding of this study is that Korean high school students' mental health states significantly influence their academic achievement and school dropout rate.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the Students' Mental Health School-Community Cooperative Model on the school mental health awareness of the participants (school administrators, teachers, students). METHODS: Data were collected from 140 schools that participated in the project. The questionnaires were composed of items about the school mental health policy, climate and capacity. The data was analyzed through paired t-tests between pre and post, and a comparison was made between the 1st and 2nd phase regions. RESULTS: The total scores of the teacher and student groups increased significantly, whereas those of the school administrators did not. The awareness of the teachers showed more changes in the 1st phase regions, while those of the students changed more at the 2nd phase. CONCLUSION: Based on the results, the expansion of the Students' Mental Health School-Community Cooperative Model was proposed.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine the results of the 2013 students' mental health school-community cooperative model. This study investigated teachers' awareness of change in school environment and analyzed the follow-up conditions of students. METHODS: The sample consisted of 55 schools which participated in the 2013 students' mental health school-community cooperative model. Two questionnaires were used : one was composed of items about mental health resources, school policy and practice, school climate and community referral, and the other was on management of follow-up conditions for high risk students. RESULTS: First, teachers' awareness regarding school mental health resources, school policy and practice, school climate, and community referral showed positive change. That is, the 2013 students' mental health school-community cooperative model works for improving teachers' interest, awareness and effort regarding mental health. Second, students, who were found by screening test and observation, were managed continually. Most students received follow-up interventions at school, and half of the students were referred to a specialized institution such as a mental health clinic, Wee center, personal counseling center, community welfare center, and so on. CONCLUSION: This study was a preliminary research, therefore follow-up studies are required in order to accomplish the 2013 students' mental health school-community cooperative model.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study was done to assess effects of Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) in a community mental health center. METHODS: This study was a non-equivalent control group design with two groups, each of 20 clients. The instruments were the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS), Global Assessment of Function (GAF), Satisfaction of Life, and the number and duration of admissions. Data collection was done in March, 2010 for the pre-test, and in March, 2011 for the post-test in the S community mental health center in Gyung-gi province. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Fisher's exact test, and Mann-Whitney U test with the SPSS/WIN program. RESULTS: The experimental group showed significant differences in the duration of admission, GAF, and Satisfaction of Life, but not on number of admissions and BPRS. CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicate that ACT can be applied as an effective case management model in Korea.
