Genital myiasis associated with genital piercing. Case report

ABSTRACT CONTEXT: Myiasis is caused by larval infestation that usually occurs in exposed wounds. Dermatobia hominis is the most common fly species responsible for this parasitic infection. Genital piercing is an ornamental practice used in certain social circles. At placement, it transverses the skin surface and, as such, may be related to complications. CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 31-year-old man with a history of wound infection secondary to genital piercing who was exposed to an environment with flies, leading to myiasis. Mechanical removal and systemic antiparasitic drugs are possible treatments for myiasis. However, prevention that includes wound cleaning and dressing is the best way to avoid this disease. CONCLUSIONS: Genital piercing can lead to potential complications and myiasis may occur when skin lesions are not properly treated.

Apendicite com intussuscepção e endometriose: um relato de caso / Appendicitis with intussusception and endometriosis: a case report

A intussuscepção do apêndice é uma condição rara (1) e de difícil diagnóstico radiológico (2). Várias são as causas primárias da intussuscepção do apêndice, como apendicite, neoplasia e endometriose (2). A apendicite, na sua forma aguda, é a causa mais comum de abdome agudo de tratamento cirúrgico (3). É uma doença típica dos adolescentes e adultos jovens e incomum antes dos cinco e após os 50 anos. O objetivo deste trabalho é o de relatar o caso de uma paciente do sexo feminino, 39 anos, que procurou o serviço de emergência do município de Pelotas com quadro de dor abdominal em fossa ilíaca direita há vários dias e com exame de imagem sugerindo apendicite. Quando submetida à apendicectomia, foi constatado que seu apêndice estava totalmente invaginado para o ceco e, no exame anatomopatológico, foi constatado endometriose no apêndice cecal. A partir do relato desse caso, foi realizada uma revisão da literatura pertinente para debater a relação entre endometriose e intussuscepção de apêndice.

Intussusception of the appendix is a rare condition (1) of diffi cult radiological diagnosis (2). There are several primary causes of intussusception of the appendix, such as appendicitis, cancer and endometriosis (2). Appendicitis, in its acute form, is the most common cause of acute surgical abdomen (3). It is a typical disease of adolescents and young adults and unusual before 5 and after 50 years. The aim of this study is to report the case of a female patient, 39, who came to the emergency department of the municipality of Pelotas with abdominal pain in the right iliac fossa for several days and imaging suggesting appendicitis. When subjected to appendectomy, it was found that her appendix was totally invaginated into the cecum, and histopathological examination showed endometriosis in the cecal appendix. From the report of this case, a literature review was performed to discuss the relationship between endometriosis and intussusception of appendix.
