RESUMO

OBJECTIVETo investigate the value of carotid arteriography and selective embolization in surgical treatment of carotid body tumor.

METHODSSeven patients with carotid body tumor were operated, and four patients were performed with carotid arteriography and selective embolization before operation. All patients were treated by stripping the carotid body tumor from the carotid artery. Treatment effectiveness of the patients with and without selective embolization were compared.

RESULTSSeven cases were classified as Shamblin III type. The CT scan and digital subtraction angiography (DSA) showed the tumor lesion in the carotid bifurcation, and the tumor and its relation with the surrounding arteries were expressed by CT and three dimensional CT images. All cases of carotid body tumor were resected without any carotid artery ligation. No serious complications occurred after operation. There was average 160 mL blood loss in operation of four patients that had angiograms and were preoperatively embolized, and average 2.5 h were expended. There was average 600 mL blood loss in operation of three patients without preoperatively embolized, and average 4 h were expended. Preoperatively high-selected embolization of the tumor-feeding artery could effectively reduce the intraoperative bleeding. With 1.5-3 years follow-up, none of the carotid body tumor recurred in all the seven cases.

CONCLUSIONCarotid arteriography and embolization therapy may decrease blood loss and higher risk for operation in the patients with carotid body tumor.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVETo study the damages of fluoride on the male reproductive system in rat testes.

METHODSA total of 30 male SD rats were randomly divided into control group, high, low dose fluorine treated groups, which were given normal saline ,20 mg/kg sodium fluoride, and 10mg/kg sodium fluoride respectively. After 39 days the change of the weight of rats and the number of sperms were observed. The change of telomerase reverse transcriptase(TERT) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) were observed by using in situ hybridization and radioimmunoassay respectively.

RESULTSThe weight was (273.39 +/- 20.68), (240.00 +/- 21.39) g in NaF treated groups, which was lower than that in control group(P < 0.05); The rate of TERT expression in germ cells of testes in NaF treated groups was (13.89 +/- 4.86)% and (6.33 +/- 4.42)% respectively, which was significantly lower than that in control group (P < 0.05). The rate of PCNA expression in germ cells of tests in NaF treated groups was (0.71 +/- 0.05)%, (0.60 +/- 0.08)% respectively, which also was significant lower than that in control group(P < 0.05). The number of sperms was (18.31 +/- 1.20)10(10)/L, (9.17 +/- 1.38)10(10)/L, which was lower than that in control group (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONFluorine possibly damages the male reproductive system by reducing the expression of TERT and PCNA.

RESUMO

Continuous ethanol fermentation using very high gravity medium containing 280 g/L glucose, 5 g/L yeast extract and 3 g/L peptone was run at the dilute rates of 0.006 h(-1), 0.012 h(-1), 0.017 h(-1), 0.024 h(-1) and 0.032 h(-1) (based on the total working volume) in a combined bioreactor system composed of a stirred tank and three-stage tubular bioreactors in series. Oscillations marked by big fluctuations of residual glucose, ethanol and biomass were observed at the dilution rate of 0.012 h(-1). The Hopf Bifurcation theory was used to analyze and predict the occurring of these oscillations and the dilution rates that incited oscillations. Theoretical analysis revealed that oscillations can occur at designated specific growth rates and was validated by experimental results. The benefits of oscillations for the fermentation system were also discussed by comparing the fermentation results with those without oscillations.
