RESUMO

ABSTRACT: This paper aimed to determine arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2), end-expired CO2 pressure (ETCO2), and the difference between arterial and end-expired CO2 pressure (Pa - ETCO2) in prepubescent and adult bitches undergoing videolaparoscopic or conventional ovariohyterectomy (OH). Forty bitches were randomly assigned to four groups: Conventional Adult (CA), Conventional Pediatric (CP), Videolaparoscopic Adult (VA) and Videolaparoscopic Pediatric (VP). Pulse rate (PR), respiratory rate (RR), systolic, mean, and diastolic arterial pressures (SAP, MAP, DAP), ETCO2, peak inspiratory pressure (PIP), pH, arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2), PaCO2, base excess (BE) and HCO3 - were measured. Based on the PaCO2 and ETCO2 values, Pa-ETCO2 was determined. There was no significant difference in PaCO2 between the VA (42.5±5.2 to 53.7±5.2) and VP (48.4±5.4 to55.4±5.7) groups. During the postoperative period, all groups presented with hypertension. However, mild hypertension (SAP 150 to 159mmHg) was observed in the VP group as compared to severe hypertension (SAP>180mmHg) in the CA group, suggesting that both the age range and videolaparoscopic OH are associated with lower levels of hypertension during the postoperative period in dogs.

Although seed dispersal by ants might reduce seed predation near the parent plants, predation on discarded seeds clustered on nest refuse piles may reduce any initial benefit provided by seed removal. Here we examine the fate of Croton sonderianus seeds that were discarded by Pheidole fallax Mayr ants on their nest refuses in caatinga vegetation of northeast Brazil. We collected all seeds discarded in refuse piles of 20 nests and within a radius of 50 cm from their borders, and examined them for evidence of predation. A total of 3,017 seeds were recorded either located in the P. fallax refuse piles (89.1 percent) or nest vicinity (10.9 percent). Predation was three fold higher in nest vicinity as compared to refuse piles. By removing seeds from beneath parent plants and relocating then to refuse piles, P. fallax is possibly providing double protection services for C. sonderianus seeds. Our findings represent the first evidence for predator-avoidance as benefit for plants resulting from ant seed-dispersal in the neotropics.

RESUMO

The Tradescantia micronucleus test is a sensitive bioassay for mutagenesis that may be employed both under field and laboratory conditions. This test has been standardized mostly on the basis of the results obtained with clone 4430. However, this clone is not well adapted to tropical weather, frequently showing problems with growth and flowering. In addition, it is attacked by parasites and insects, a fact that limits its use in field studies aiming at the biomonitoring of air pollution. In the city of Säo Paulo, Tradescantia pallida (Rose) Hunt. var. purpurea Boom is widely distributed as an ornamental plant in gardens and along roadsides and streets, mostly because of its natural resistance and its easy propagation. In this report, we present dose-response curves indicating that the sensitivity of T. pallida and clone 4430 to X-radiation (1, 10, 25 and 50 cGy) is similar. The results confirm our previous suggestion that T. pallida represents a good alternative for in situ mutagenesis testing in tropical regions, especially biomonitoring studies in which the exposure conditions may not be fully controllable

RESUMO

Eleven lepromatous leprosy (LL) patients with a bacterial index (BI) of three and above who had undergone two years of multidrug therapy (MDT) and yet had positive skin smears at the end of treatment were chosen for this study. Biopsies from the skin and lymphnodes were histopathologically evaluated for the presence of granulomas and M. leprae. M. leprae isolated from the skin and lymphnodes were inoculated into the foot-pads of normal mice to test their viability. On histopathological examination of the biopsy specimens, it was found that granulomas and M. leprae were present in the skin and lymphnode biopsies of all patients except two, in whom, although granulomas persisted, M. leprae were not found in skin biopsy specimens. No growth was obtained in the foot-pads of mice inoculated with organisms isolated from skin and lymphnode biopsies of all 11 patients indicating a near complete bacterial kill. That would account for the extremely low relapse rates reported until now in LL patients who had undergne two years of MDT.

RESUMO

Three patients of disseminated mucormycosis are described. None had predisposing factors. Two of them presented with nonspecific symptoms along with acute renal failure and peritonitis. Third patient had fulminating primary cutaneous mucormycosis which disseminated later. Development of acute renal failure with smooth enlargement of both kidneys in an apparently healthy individual or appearance of mould in a wound should raise the suspicion of mucormycosis. The hallmark of the infection was vascular invasion and thrombosis. Antemortem diagnosis could be made in one patient only. All patients had progressive downhill course despite supportive treatment, antibiotic and amphotericin in-B in one patient.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND. Malnutrition is common in patients admitted for surgery and is a major cause of increased morbidity and mortality. Nutritional support has been shown to be of help in reducing complications. Parenteral nutrition and commercially available enteral diets are expensive, so the efficacy of a 'home-brew' enteral diet was studied in such patients. METHODS. Forty malnourished patients, 20 with benign disease and 20 with malignancy, were administered a 'home-brew' enteral diet (1140 calories and 60 g protein per litre) perioperatively for 14 days. They received 2500 to 4000 calories per day according to their requirement. Weight, triceps skinfold thickness, midarm circumference, serum albumin and transferrin, absolute lymphocyte count and creatinine-height index were monitored on days 0, 7 and 14. Nitrogen balance was estimated on alternate days and the results of the two groups were compared. RESULTS. Weight, skinfold thickness and midarm circumference did not change. Serum albumin levels showed a rise in the benign group by day 7, but the rise attained significance in the malignancy group by day 14. A similar pattern was observed in transferrin levels and there was a significant correlation (r = 0.652, p < 0.001) between albumin and transferrin levels. A positive nitrogen balance was attained earlier in the benign group (4.3 v. 5.8 days, p < 0.001). The creatinine-height index showed a rise in both groups by day 7 and a further rise by day 14. Diarrhoea was the commonest complication but was easily controlled with loperamide. The efficacy of the diet was evidenced by the improvement recorded in various objective nutritional parameters and complications were minimal. CONCLUSION. This cost-effective diet may be used for nutritional support with good results in patients in India and other developing countries.
