Analysis the data by using SPSS. Results Medical students who entered for study in the academic year 1997 were 172 students and were success in 6 year study 162 students. In premedical level, GPAs of Quota was higher than Entrance (p0.05). Total grade from year 1-6, GPAs of Quota was higher than Entrance (p\>0.05) and Rural project (p\>0.05). The achievement in premedical level was correlation with the achievement in preclinical level, clinical level and the whole program significantly at level 0.05.(r = 0.77, 0.49 and 0.76 respectively). Conclusion Medical students from Quota had more achievement than Entrance and Rural project at premedical level, preclinical level and the whole programe. RESUMO

To study the different etiologies of jaundiced infants and compare them with the clinical findings of common etiologies. Methods A prospective collective study of jaundiced infants who were admitted at the Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai from January 1994to December 1998. The collected data included clinical findings and investigations. Summary Biliary atresia and neonatal hepatitis were two common etiologies of jaundiced infants admitted at Chiang Mai Hospital. Both of them were diagnosed at a late stage. The clay or pale yellow stool was the only statitical significance found in biliary atresia patients. The HIDA scan was very sensitive and less specific. An intraoperative cholangiogram was helpful for a definite diagnosis. In a cholestatic infant with pale or yellow stool, an early transfer is essential. Chiang Mai Med Bull 2003;42(1):17-23.

RESUMO

Abstract Objective To evaluate electrolyte disturbances in children presenting with acute diarrhea at a tertiary care center, and identify any possible risk factors. Methods This was a retrospective study. Children who were admitted to the pediatric ward due to acute diarrhea were enrolled into this study. The inclusion criteria consisted of 1 month-5 year old children with a history of acute diarrhea (more than 3 loose stools per day or mucus bloody stool) that had a duration of less than 14 days. The patients were assessed clinically by degrees of dehydration. Serum electrolytes were evaluated in all cases. Results Fifty-three patients were included. The mean age was 19.4 months. One half of the patients developed moderate dehydration, whereas, 28.3% and 22.6% had mild and severe dehydra-tion, respectively. Metabolic acidosis, noted in 54.7%, was the most common electrolyte abnormality. Isonatremic dehydration comprised 73.6% of the cases, whereas, 17% and 9.4% presented with hyponatremic and hypernatremic dehydration, respectively. The younger children were predisposed to develop electrolyte abnormalities, particularly metabolic acidosis and hypernatremia. (p
