RESUMO

Background: intensive physical activity can lead to muscle soreness

Objective: evaluate the effect of short-term use of of chamomile essence [CE] on muscle soreness in young girls after an exhaustive exercise

Methods: twenty young girls volunteered. They were randomly assigned into two equal groups of experimental and control. The experimental group drank 300 ml of CE twice daily for twelve days. The control group drank water and the chamomile essential oil as placebo during this period. In the eleventh day, exhaustive exercise on a treadmill with a negative slope of 5 degrees for all subjects was conducted. Blood samples were taken on the first and tenth days before the exhaustive exercise, and 1, 24 and 48 hours after exercise. Data were analyzed using independent t-test and ANOVA for repeated measure with a significant level of P<0.05

Results: no significant difference was detected between the two groups in the index of serum creatine kinase. Lactate dehydrogenase index in 1 and 48 hours after the test in the experimental group was significantly decreased compared with the control group. Aspartate amino transferase index in the experimental group increased 24 hours after the exercise, and decreased after 48 hours of the exhaustive exercise compared to the control group. Pain scale in the experimental group was reduced 1 and 24 hours after the test compared with the control group

Conclusion: the results suggested that young girls who want to do exhaustive exercises can drink CE to prevent or reduce the effects of muscle soreness

RESUMO

Background and Objective: Nano-sized particles at scale of 1 to 100 nm, called nanoparticles. In addition, the composition and structure of materials is also one of the factors influencing the material properties. With the advent of nanotechnology and due to increasing antimicrobial properties of nanoscale silver it can also be used in the fight against various human pathogens. This study was carried out to evaluate the antibacterial effect of silver nanoparticles synthesized by green method against the standard strains Escherichia coli k12 and Escherichia coli 25922

Methods: In this descriptive study, silver nanoparticles were synthesized using Prosopis farcta seed exudates and analyzed by UV visible spectrophotometer, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Antibacterial effect of silver nanoparticles was evaluated using broth macro-dilution method. The minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC] and minimum bactericidal concentration [MBC] of silver nanoparticles was determined on the standard strains of Escherichia coli k12 and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922

Results: Transmission electron microscopy showed nanoparticles with diameters in the range between 5-35 nm with a maximum frequency range in 20-25 nm. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of bacteria, of E. coli k12 and E. coli 25922 respectively, were 1.56 and 0.39 micro g/ml [ppm] and minimum bactericidal concentrations of 3.12 and 0.78 micro g/ml wiring [ppm]

Conclusion: Biological synthesis using P. farcta seed is a inexpensive, method and require no energy. Due to the strong antibacterial activity of silver nanoparticles, can be a suitable alternative for disinfectants, disinfection and control of pathogens

RESUMO

Neural stem cells can difrentiate to mature neural cells. Neural stem cells can migrate and repair the damage neural tissue. This study was done to determine the effect of hydro-ethanolic extract of Chamaemelum nobile on cell prolifration and apoptosis of rat hipocample neural stem cells in the oxitative stress condition. In this experimental study, neural stem cells were isolated from hippocampus of neonatal rat brain. Isolated neural stem cells were treated at 200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 microg/ml of hydro-ethanolic extract of Chamaemelum nobile for 48h. Cells proliferation rate were evaluated by MTT assay. Anti-apoptotic property of hydro-ethanolic extract of Chamaemelum nobile evaluated using TUNEL assay method. Proliferation of neural stem cells were significantly increased in Chamaemelum nobile extract group in comparision with control [P<0.05]. The rate of apoptotic cells were significantly reduced in Chamaemelum nobile extract group compared to control [P<0.05]. The hydrethanolic extract of Chamaemelum nobile increases proliferation rate and reduces apoptosis of neural stem cells in the oxitative stress condition

RESUMO

The incidence of trocar site herniation differs in various studies. The incidence of these hernias is increased in patients who experience significant weight gain postoperatively. The aim of this study was to compare the complication of closed trocar port site with open port and effect of body mass index on the herniation using trocar site incision in laparoscopic surgery. In this prospective, randomized clinical, a total of 100 patients were scheduled to undergo appendectomy, cholecystectomy, ovarian cyst excision, herniorraphy and diagnostic laparoscopy at the Surgical Gastroenterology Service of The Baqiyatallah Hospital. Patients were randomly distributed into group OP [open port, n = 52] and group CP [closed port, n = 48]. The follow up intervals were at 3 and 12 months after surgical operation. Five patients in OP group developed incision hernia. Regarding infection, hematoma, there was no significant difference between the two groups. Surprisingly, in OP group the average BMI [kg/m[2]] in herniated patients was significantly less than nonherniated cases. An important step to avoid post laparoscopic hernias is suturing the fascia whenever the trocar diameter exceeds 10 mm. If surgeons tend to have an open trocar site of 10 mm, particularly in facial defects; the trocar site is protected from incision hernia in obese patients with high BMI

RESUMO

Wound-related complications are major sources of trouble in post-operative period and slow down the wound healing process. This study was performed to determine the incidence of early wound related complications in laparoscopic versus open abdominal surgeries. Medical records of 104 elective laparoscopic [A] and 106 diagnosis matched open surgeries [B] including appendectomy, cholecystectomy, ventral hernia repair, and bariatric surgery were retrospectively reviewed between Jun 2002 and Jan 2005. Study data included patients' sex, age, wound class, type of operation, and occurrence of early wound related complications. Surgical wounds were evaluated for presence of early complications during the post-op period and 10 to 15 days after the operation. The two groups were not different regarding age, sex and wound classes. Wound infection developed in 7 patients [RR: 0.06 [0.01-0.77] [95%CI]] and none in patients of group B. Incidence of Hematoma was similar in the two groups; one case in each. No patients in the two groups experienced seruma nor wound dehiscence. Gender, age, and wound classes were not associated with higher rates of wound complications. Laparoscopic surgery significantly reduced the incidence of early wound complications, namely wound infection, and is a safe and efficient alternative to conventional open procedures

RESUMO

Vertical Banded Gastroplasty [VBG] is a method to reduce the stomach volume, which causes weight loss through lowering amount of consuming solid foods. This operation consists of implanting a small pouch in the proximal of the stomach and a tight exit area. This study was made to evaluate the efficacy and complication of VBG in the treatment of morbid obesity. The present practical study is prospective clinical experience without control group who was carried out between year 1376 and 1381. Of total 30 patients; 21 [70%] females and 9 [30%] male who underwent [VBG] in Baqiyatallah hospital. The averages of age was 32.87 +/- 8.12 years, height 168.66 cm, weight 130.70 +/- 19.33 Kg and BMI 45.53 +/- 10.15 kg/m[2]. The indication of surgery was BMI >40 or BMI = 35-40 with co-morbid illness. Seventy percent of patients complained from a symptom due to excess weight and co-morbid illness [diabetes, high blood pressure, cardio-pulmonary problems]. Duration of hospitalization in the patients in the groups without early complication was 9.7 days and the average follow up was 24 months [range 2-72 months]. Weight loss in the first month after surgery was 11.03 +/- 2.48 and after first year was 41.38 +/- 10.93. The average decrease in BMI at the end of study was 10.45 kg/m[2]. 66.7 percent of the patients did not show any post-operative complication. One of the patients had pulmonary emboli [3.3 percent], one wound infection [3.3 percent], one GI bleeding [3.3 percent] and 2 patients had peritonitis [6.6 percent]. Regarding delay complication, there was one case of intestine obstruction [3.3 percent] and 6 cases of incisional hernia [20 percent]. One of the patients died due to hypovolumic shock [3.3 percent]. This study showed that amount of loss of weight following a VBG operation was significant and also, it was found that amount of loss of weight in male was significantly more than female [P=0.020]. Among the excess weight associated disease, it was only respiratory problems, which had a significant relationship with post surgery complication [P=0.026]. In the meantime, three was no significant relationship between age, weight, sex and BMI with regard to postoperative complication

RESUMO

In addition to the liver, human hydatidosis has been reported in the lung, brain, abdominal viscera, muscles, and heart chambers. Infarction of the brain has also been documented. Arterial embolism of the lower extremities by hydatid cyst, however, is extremely rare. In the presented case, acute ischemia of the patient's left leg led to gangrene and amputation. Complete workup for localization of the primary focus of hydatid cyst was inconclusive; however, the most probable explanation is spontaneous rupture of a left ventricular wall hydatid cyst which subsequently embolized to the aorta and lodged in the left femoral artery
