RESUMO

Benign oral fibrous histiocytoma is a rare lesion in the head and neck region. This tumor usually presents as a single nodular, painless mass which grows slowly and varies in size from 2-3 cm to over 10cm. Most patients are under 50 years of age and a history of trauma; chronic infection and sun exposure are reported. Case Report: In this paper a case of benign fibrous histiocytoma in the tongue of a 44-year-old man is reported. In microscopic view spindle cell Fascicules, along with infiltration of multinucleated giant cells was presented and for definitive diagnosis immunohistochemistry staining for SMA, Desmin, MSA, CD68 and CD34 was conducted. Microscopic feature of oral fibrous histiocytoma may be similar to some soft tissue tumors. Therefore, IHC is necessary for definite diagnosis

RESUMO

A study in Babol, Islamic Republic of Iran, used a questionnaire to gather information on knowledge about oral cancer and its risk factors and to evaluate the efficacy of an educational brochure. From a community sample of 400 people, 76.0% had no knowledge of oral cancer. Mean knowledge score before the education intervention was 1.47 [standard deviation 3.40] out of 10. Knowledge about oral cancer was not associated with age, sex or education level but urban residents had better knowledge than rural residents. Mean knowledge score improved significantly by 5.92 [SD 3.30] at 1 month after the intervention among the 226 respondents who had read the brochure

RESUMO

Oral cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers and is one of 10 most causes of death. The proper knowledge of general dentists about oral cancer and suspected precancerous lesions can cause early diagnosis and treatment of patients, so the aim of this study was the evaluation of knowledge of general dentists in Babol about oral cancer. This descriptive cross-sectional study was done on 85 general dentists who worked in Babol. The dentists were 57 males and 28 females, with the mean age of 38.52 +/- 10.29 years and the mean time passed from their graduation was 12.01 +/- 11.5 years. A questionnaire was prepared and dentists filled it out. Data were analyzed via SPSS software, by student's t-test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficient. The mean score of total dentists' knowledge was 8.95 +/- 2.7 of 14. The mean score of knowledge was 9.04 +/- 2.24 and 8.70 +/- 2.06, in males and females respectively. 61.8% of dentists gained moderate score of knowledge and their knowledge were declined by increasing the time passed from their graduation [P=0.033]. 88.2% of dentists knew the most important predisposing factor of oral cancer but over one half of the answers [51.8%] to the most common precancerous lesion was incorrect and 60.1% of them did not know the most common site of precancerous changes. The results indicated that knowledge of dentists in Babol about oral cancer was not sufficient. Therefore some established educational programs about oral cancer is recommended in order to increase the knowledge of dentists
