RESUMO

To report the results of volar bone grafting for nonunited carpal scaphoid fractures. Twenty male patients with symptomatic non-union of the carpal scaphoid, 16 right and 4 left were studied, after a follow up period of 8-12 months, mean 10 months. All cases were symptomatic, mainly with pain interfering with wrist ativities. Volar bone grafting was done using the Matti-Russe technique. The results were assessed clinically and radiologically. The overall final reslts were satisfactory in 18 patients [90%]. In these the fracture was united and there was a significant pain relief, increase in the range of movement and in the strength of the hand grip. The fracture did not unite in 2 cases. This study proves that this method of surgical intervention is stilt valid and yields a reproducible outcome in symptomatic non-unions

RESUMO

Two-component mixture of ampicillin and cloxacillin with considerable overlapping spectra was assayed by a second-derivative spectrophotometric method using a diode-array spectrophotometer. The second-derivative spectra of sample solutions in distilled water were scanned between 260 and 300 nm. Derivative measurements were carried out at 269 nm [zero-crossing], and at 288 nm [peak-to-zero] for ampicillin and cloxacillin, respectively. The procedure does not require any separation step or chemical reagents and allows for a single-unit assay for normal dosage used. Beer's law holds up to 14 mg% for both penicillins. The method was successfully applied to commercial preparations containing a binary mixture of both penicillins

RESUMO

Induced parturition was achieved in ten buffaloes by using 20 mg. dexamethasone and 8mg. estradiol benzoate, injected 3 weeks before the expected calving date. The results were compared with ten buffaloes that delivered normally. All buffaloes calved 54.3 +/- 1.685 hours after treatment, but with increased rate of retained placenta. Such treatment had no significant effect on calving difficulty calf vigor, calf birth weight and milk yield of dams. Serum analysis for hormonal profile revealed a significant drop in plasma progesterone concentration to a level that did not significantly differ from control animals; while plasma estradiol-17B was lower by the days of parturition. There was a similar increase of estrogen excretion in urine in normal and induced delivery. Effect of treatment on levels of progesterone and estrogen in retained placenta was an decreased progesterone level and increased estrogen/progesterone ratio one day before premature calving
