RESUMO

Nasal allergy is a common problem in Karachi all the year round. Not enough attention is paid for its diagnosis and management. One Hundred patients were assesed clinically and by prick skin test during July 1982 to June 1983. It is more common in females and in younger patients who belong to upper social status and better living conditions. Other predisposing factors include airconditioning and humidity. House dust mite, moulds and pollens are common allergies in this descending order. Immunotherapy was done in 70 patients out of which 39 [56%] have found definite improvement in their symptoms and found the treatment worth the expence. Extensive studies are needed to fully asses this sort of treatment. At present no other treatment offers a chance of permanent cure though the value of other forms of treatment including antihistamines and local cortisone sprays cannot be denied

RESUMO

Foreign bodies in Larynx are rarely described in literature though the problem is not rare as is evident from recent recognition of complete asphyxia on a bolus of food. Two cases of Laryngeal Foreign bodies are presented which were lucky as the size of foreign body was small and airway was maintained until removed

RESUMO

One hundred and sixty three malignant lesions in the region of the pharynx, oesophagus and oral cavity, in secured workers and thus families, seen over a period of six years [1976 to 1981] have been analysed. The valecula and pyriform fossa were the most common sites in the pharynx and the cheek mucosa in the oral cavity. The incidence was 10 cases in 100.000 secured workers per year. Males between the ages of 41 and 50 years and mostly emigrants from India with specific chewing habits were usually affected. Histopathology revealed 84% of the tumours to be squamous cell carcinoma and TNM staging classified most to be in the advanced stage. No evidence was found to label sub-mucous fibrosis as a premalignant condition
