RESUMO

The present work aimed at estimating the prevalence of respiratory, hepatic, dermal and other diseases among workers occupationally exposed to dyestuffs in a textile dyeing industry. Also, the possible interaction between the occupational exposure to textile dyes and the other endemic diseases in this area, mainly schistosomiasis is studied. Clinical and biochemical studies, as well as ventilatory function tests were conducted for 90 male workers occupationally exposed to different textile dyestuffs, as well as 59 control subjects. Jaundice, chest symptoms, neurobehavioral manifestations [nervousness, insomnia, fatigue,. etc.] and different skin reactions [blisters, boils, acne,. etc.] ranked first among the textile dyeing workers. Better selection of workers and suitable periodic medical examination are essential in any future medical surveillance and monitoring program. Engineering control of workplace pollutants and using protective clothes and devices are also important items in protecting the textile dyeing workers from occupational hazards. Good housekeeping and proper environmental monitoring of workplaces are essential measures to be done by the occupational safety and health team

RESUMO

Biochemical parameters on blood samples of workers exposed to trichloroethylene [TCE] were measured. Such parameters included serum total protein and its fractions, transaminases [GPT and GOT], alkaline phosphatase, pseudo cholinesterase, zinc and copper. The material of this study consisted of 125 workers, in banknotes printing factory, exposed to concentration of TCE ranged from 108 to 157 ppm with mean duration of exposure being 14.2 +/- 1.46 years. Twenty eight non- exposed clinically free subjects were submitted as a control group. The results showed that serum total protein decreased significantly among the exposed group compared with the control. Total globulins and its simple fractions, except beta-globulin also significantly increased due to TCE exposure. Serum transaminases [GPT and GOT] and serum alkaline phosphatase significantly showed higher values, while pseudo-cholinesterase significantly recorded lower values in the exposed group as compared with the control. Serum zinc showed a significant lower value in the exposed group but serum copper showed higher value than the control group

RESUMO

This study investigates the relationship between mid luteal endometrial histology and serum levels of progesterone and estradiol, also the relationship between endometrial dating and serum levels of prolactin, FSH, LH, T3 and T4. The results revealed that patients having progesterone values less than 4.6 mg/ml, estradiol values less than 86 pg/ml showed proliferative or anovular pattern. On the other hand 100% of patients with progesterone values over 9.9 ng/ml and 84% of patients having estradiol over 86 pg/ml, showed secretory activity. There was a good correlation between endometrial histology and progesterone and estradiol, specially progesterone which showed 100% correlation

RESUMO

The aim of this work was to study the effect of the antibiotic NRC 501 on DNA, RNA and protein synthesis in Bacillus subtilis. The antibiotic solution was added at different concentrations and DNA, RNA and protein synthesis were estimated. In control cultures, the level of DNA, RNA and protein increased with increasing periods of incubation, where as in the presence of NRC - 501, DNA, RNA and protein synthesis were decreased. At the highest concentration 20 micro g/ml, the antibiotic completely inhibited DNA, RNA and protein formation
