RESUMO

In this study, the results of 350 patients underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy [LC], were compared with those of 420 patients on whom open cholecystectomy [OC] was performed, in Banha University Hospital. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy patients included cases presented as symptomatic chronic calcular cholecystitis [96.3%] and acute cholecystitis [3.7%], while OC patients included cases with both chronic [74%] and acute cholecystitis [18.6%] and common bile duct stones [7.4%]. The mean operative time was significantly longer in LC. This procedure was completed in 325 out of 350 patients, while converted to open in 25 patients [7.1%], with fewer complications in 20 patients [5.7%]. The mean postoperative stay was significantly shorter in LC. No mortality was reported in both groups, while the complication rate was 5.7% in LC and 9% in OC

RESUMO

Between April 1991 and March 1992, 112 inguinal hernia repairs in 100 patients were managed in King Saoud Hospital, Aunaizah, Saudi Arabia. The patients were randomized prospectively to perform either shouldice repair or plication darn. 99% of the patients were males of all adult age group. The mean patient's age was 49.2 [S. D. +/- 1.5] [range 20-71 years] for shouldice repair group, 52.1 [S. D. +/- 69] [range 24-69 years] for plication darn group. 55% were right sided hernia, 12% were bilateral, 68% were indirect and 10% were pantaloon hernia. Polypropylene suture was used for all of them. The mean hospital stay was 4.2-4.1 respectively. Postoperative complication were mild for the shouldice group [3.6% hematoma, 3.6% wound infection, 3.6% chest infection and 1.8% paresthesia]. For the plication darn group, it was [hematoma in 1.8%, wound infection in 5.4%, chest infection in 3.6%, and paresthesia in 1.8%]. After a follow up of 18 months, recurrence was detected in 1.8% of patients of the shouldice group and 3.6% in the plication darn group. By this study, the clinical reliability of shouldice repair could be confirmed
