RESUMO

There is impression that electro-cautery is superior to chemical cautery in the treatment of simple anterior epistaxis. Since no evaluation of the relative merits of electro and chemical cautery has been reported, a prospective r and omized study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of electro-cautery and cautery with silver nitrate. The results of the study showed that there was no statistically significant difference between the two methods in either controlling the epistaxis or in the incidence of complications. It was concluded that since cautery with a silver nitrate tipped applicator is simpler, and of equal effectiveness, it would appear to be the treatment of choice for simple anterior epistaxis. Recurrent cases were treated with simple new surgical procedure, elevation of hemi mucoperchendrial flap of the bleeding area

RESUMO

In Sabah Hospital, Kuwait, during 1993, 155 children with aspirated F.B. were treated. The majority of F.B. were organic 84%. In pre-endoscopy radiological diagnosis, fluoroscopy was the most important either alone or combined with plain chest X-ray, laryngotracheal F.Bs. through relatively uncommon showed 80% normal X-ray findings. But in the most common site, main Bronchus negative X-ray was only 38% improved by use of fluoroscopy to 12.5%. The positive X-ray findings were obstructive emphysema, inspiratory shift of the mediastinal shadow, pneumonia and atelectasis, with more than one finding in some cases. Main duration of aspiration was longest in bronchial F.Bs

RESUMO

Treatment of otitis media with effusion is focused on reaeration of the middle ear cavity. In achieving long term aeration, the insertion of ventilation tubes that have a long duration of stay can be beneficial. The results which presented are of a trial in which the Goode T-tube was compared with the Shepard's Grommet tube which is more commonly used. Sixty children were treated between 1990 and 1991 with T-tube in one ear and a conventional tube in the other. The results are different regarding duration of stay in the tympanic membrane, reinsertion were necessary in 47% in Grommet group and in 20% in T-tube group. Otorrhea occurred in 20% of the Grommet tube and in 13% of the T-tube. A persistent perforation was present in 6% of the ears in both groups. It is concluded that the T-tube is indicated primarily in cases when long term ventilation is needed
