RESUMO

This study was carried out on 1600 rectal swabs from children under 5 years of age admitted at the health centre in Islamshahr, Tehran province, Islamic Republic of Iran, during 1998-99. The specimens were examined for various bacterial pathogens. Isolation rates were: enteropathogenic Escherichia coli 6.8%, Shigella spp. 3.4%, Salmonella spp. 2.9%, Campylobacter spp. 0.9%, Yersinia spp. 0.7%. The isolation rate was highest in the summer, except for Yersinia spp., which was predominantly isolated in spring. The results of this study demonstrate the significance of Yersinia spp. And Campylobacter spp. in patients with diarrhoea

RESUMO

During a period of 5 months of 276 faecal specimens of inpatients, aged 0 to 5 years old, with diarrhea in Zahedan, were screened for evidence of enteric Campylobacteria. For isolation, the stool was plated on a selective medium and incubated at 42oc in a microaerophilic atmosphere for 48-72 hours. On Gram stain, the organisms were small, curved, comma shaped and gram negative rods. The following tests, which have been done, were among the most important differential characteristics for Campylobacter species: catalase, oxidase, hippurate hydrolysis, growth in the presence of 1% glycin, 3.5% Nacl and 42oC, susceptible to nalidixic acid and cephalotin. The results were shown that out of 276 specimens, 15[5.4%] were positive for Campylobacter, 10 organisms were C. jejuni, whereas 5 were identified to be C. coli. All strains were isolated from children below 2 years of age. These were sensitive to nalidixic acid, erythromycin, streptomycin and nitrofuranotoin, while the isolates were resistant to cephalotin, penicillin G, co-trimoxazol and amoxicillin

RESUMO

Biotypes, serotypes and lysotypes of 38 Yersinia isolated from 48 water samples were studied. These strains belonged to Y.enterocolitica, Y.frederiksenii, Y.kristensenii and Y. intermedia. Except 23.7% of non-serotypable strains, ten different serotypes were isolated of which 0:6 and 0:10 kl were the most frequent. The serotypes 0:3, 0:8, 0:9 responsible for almost all registered cases of yersiniosis in man were not detected. However, a few types 0:5, 0:6, 0:10 kl isolated rarely from specimens [urine of feces] of patients were found. These serotypes can be used for correlation with Yersinia and yersiniosis in man
