RESUMO
Se realizó una investigación histórica desde Febrero de 2004 hasta el 2005 para reflejar la práctica social de las comadronas en el período que comprenden los años de 1937 al 1967 en la ciudad de Nuevitas. Este ejercicio asistencial dejó de existir con la desaparición de los partos domiciliarios tras el surgimiento del Sistema Nacional de Salud. Para esta investigación se realizó una revisión bibliográfica de textos que ofrecen la imagen jurídica y profesional de este servicio; sin embargo, no se halló constancia escrita del desarrollo de la práctica social de las comadronas en la localidad. En cuanto a los métodos empíricos que se emplearon: entrevistas a parturientas, a familiares de las comadronas, a antiguas autoridades del municipio y antiguos trabajadores. Se estudiaron las principales comadronas de la localidad, se utilizaron como variables: sus valores ético- humanísticos, la actividad en el parto domiciliario y en la clínica particular, y sus historias de vida.
A historical investigation was carried to reflect the midwives´ social practice in the period from 1937 to 1967 in the city of Nuevitas. This exercise of social work got to an end with the disappearance of the domiciliary childbirths after the coming forth of the National Health System. It was carried out a bibliographical revision of texts that offers the juridical and professional image of this service, however there was not written record of the development of the midwives social practice in this town. The empiric methods that were used: interviews to midwives and their families, to old authorities of the municipality and old workers. The work of the most popular midwives was studied; and was used as variables: their ethical-humanistic values, the activity in the domiciliary childbirths and in private clinics, and their life histories.
