Dry Extract of Passiflora incarnata L. leaves as a Cardiac and Hepatic Oxidative Stress Protector in LDLr-/- Mice Fed High-Fat Diet

ABSTRACT The control of dyslipidemia by using herbal products is an important subject for studies. In this study, we evaluated the effects of dry Passiflora incarnata L. extract over dyslipidemia, left ventricular hypertrophy, and hepatic oxidative stress of LDL receptor knockout mice (LDLr-/-). Forty 4-month old male LDLr-/- mice were distributed into four groups: Group standard diet; Group standard diet and 200 mg/kg of body weight of Passiflora incarnata L. leaf dry extract; Group high-fat diet; Group high-fat diet and 200 mg/kg of body weight of Passiflora incarnata L. leaf dry extract. After 30 days, Passiflora incarnata L. dry extract reduced the effects of the high-fat diet, with a decrease of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and increase of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), as well as a reduction of C-reactive protein, alkaline phosphatase and insulin. There was no effect on glucose, Homa index and enzymes aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase. However, the prevention of left ventricular hypertrophy occurred, as well as lipid peroxidation and the production of carbonyl proteins, which are both oxidative stress markers. In conclusion, Passiflora incarnata L. dry extract acts in the prevention of dyslipidemia, consequently, hindering the occurrence of hepatic oxidative stress and the development of left ventricular hypertrophy by the increase of serum HDL, in mice that had the effects of a high-fat diet.

Dental Care for an adolescent with chromosome pentasomy: rare case report with a two year follow-up / Atenção Odontológica a jovem com pentassomia cromossômica: relato de caso raro com acompanhamento de 2 anos

Pentasomy of the x chromosome is a rare syndrome of unknown incidence and there are few reports in the scientific literature, especially in terms of dental care for patients with this syndrome. The aim of this study was to report the dental care given to an adolescent with pentasomy of the X chromosome. The patient presented a cleft palate, impacted teeth, malocclusion, high caries activity, gingivitis and multiple tooth loss due to caries. Despite the difficulties of carrying out the dental work due to involuntary movements and the initial lack of collaboration from the patient the overall dental care was completed on an outpatient basis. The therapeutic success of the treatment was strongly supported by the significant cooperation and relationship that grew up along the period of the treatment, as well as the desire to have the treatment done by both the patient and her parents.

A pentassomia do cromossomo x é uma síndrome rara, de incidência desconhecida e com poucos relatos na literatura científica, especialmente no que diz respeito à atenção odontológica para pacientes portadores da mesma. O objetivo deste estudo foi relatar um caso de atenção odontológica a uma jovem com pentassomia do cromossomo x, que apresentava fenda palatina, dentes inclusos, má-oclusão, alta atividade de cárie, gengivite e múltiplas perdas dentárias devido à cárie. Apesar das dificuldades de se realizar o tratamento dentário devido aos movimentos involuntários e a não colaboração inicial da paciente, houve total viabilidade da atenção odontológica em âmbito ambulatorial, observando-se significativa cooperação, formação de vínculo e adesão ao tratamento pela mesma e seus responsáveis, o que gerou sucesso terapêutico.

Avaliação da resistência flexural de próteses parciais fixas confeccionadas em In Ceram Zircônia / Flexural strength evaluation of fixed partial denturesmade in In Ceram Zirconia

Avaliar a resistência flexural do In Ceram Zircônia em 20 corpos de prova, simulando uma prótese parcial fixa.Metodologia: foram utilizados 20 corpos de prova em forma de barra com as seguintes dimensões: 20mm de comprimento, 1,2mm de espessura e 4mm de largura e divididas em dois grupos: Grupo A - com distância do span de 12mm; e, Grupo B - com distância do span de 18mm, simulando respectivamente um e dois pônticos. As barras foram submetidas ao teste de carregamento de 3 pontos, análise fractográfica e microscópica eletrônica de varredura.Resultados: ANOVA, fator único não encontrou diferença estatística significante nos resultados da resistência flexural entre os grupos A e B, mas o resultado das tensões e a força de ruptura demonstraram o oposto.Conclusão: o aumento da distância entre os apoios não diminuiu a resistência flexural do material. This study evaluated the flexural strength of In Ceram Zirconia in 20 specimens, simulating a fixed partial denture.Methodology: a total of 20 specimens in the form of bar with the following dimensions: 20mm long, 1.2 mm thick and 4mm wide and divided into two groups: Group A with span distance of 12mm and Group B with span distance of 18mm, simulating one and two pontics respectively. Samples were submitted in loading test with three points, fractographic analysis and scanning electron microscopy.Results: ANOVA, single factor did not found significant statistically difference in the results of flexural strength between groups A and B, but the result of stress and rupture strength showed the opposite.Conclusion: increasing the distance between the supports did not reduce the flexural strength of the material. There is a higher stress concentration when the distance between the supports increases, this represent a tendency to break for prostheses with greater length...

Utilização de encaixe resiliente extra-coronário na obtenção de retenção, estabilidade e proteção dos pilares em prótese parcial removível / Extracoronal resilient attachment use in the attainment of retention, stability and protection of the abutments in removable partial denture

Grande parte dos pacientes que apresentam perdas dentárias bilaterais posteriores queixa-se da estética deficiente exibida pelas próteses parciais removíveis a grampo. O objetivo deste estudo foi demonstrar, através do relato de um caso clínico, a associação de prótese parcial removível (PPR) a próteses parciais fixas (PPF), através do uso de encaixes extra-coronários resilientes, como forma de se obter bom funcionamento do sistema mastigatório e proteção das estruturas envolvidas. Ao final do tratamento, o planejamento protético utilizado proporcionou à paciente o uso de uma prótese estética, confortável e estável.

Great part of the patients that presented posterior bilateral dental losses complains that the removable partial dentures retained by clasps have poor aesthetics. The aim of this study is to demonstrate, through the presentation of a clinic case, the association of removable partial dentures and fixed partial dentures as a way of obtain good masticatory function and protection of the involved structures. At the end of the treatment, the prosthetics planning selected for the case led the patient to the use of an aesthetic, comfortable and stable prosthesis.
