RESUMO

The overview of postgraduate Theses and PhD Dissertations and the factors associated with their publishing is a subject, which has not been studied in recent years, especially in the field of medical sciences. The objective of this study was to find out the publishing trend by postgraduates based on their Theses or Dissertations. In this cross-sectional study all Theses and doctorate Dissertations by postgraduates of Tehran University of Medical Sciences between 2001 and 2009 were taken to account. We collected the data using the computer files or directly from mentors, students and different databases such as Pub Med. Findings showed that manuscripts from thirty per cent of the Master Theses, 76% of the PhD Dissertations were published. There was a relationship between the publishing of the Theses or Dissertations and the students' subject of study, department, Theses or Dissertations grade, the first supervisors' title, the second advisor's title, and the number of supervisors and advisors. Since the factors associated with the publishing of papers based on Theses or Dissertations are specified, it is necessary to consider them by introducing more experienced supervisors or advisors to the students. In addition, preference to Theses/Dissertations with excellent grade and publications in indexed journals should be encouraged while interviewing PhD candidates.

RESUMO

Children and adolescent's health is a priority in all countries because the future situation of every country is based on it. It seems that a fifth [or probably a higher number] of children and adolescents suffer from dull to moderate mental disorders in the world. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of education by group discussion about the mental health preventive behaviors in13-year-old girls in district six of Tehran. The study was a quasi-experimental study. The research populations were 53 girls of second grade of state secondary school in district 6 of Tehran. They were chosen by cluster sampling method. The case students were educated for 11 sessions for 1 hour and by group discussion and making posters in groups, then, the samples were tested by a valid and reliable checklist in 2 stages. Before intervention, the average of preventive behaviors was 44.49 [SD=7.946] and 52.68 [SD=8.781] after intervention. After the educational intervention, paired t-test showed a significant difference between the average of preventive behaviors [P<0.001]. Finally, it appears that education by group discussion about mental health preventive behaviors is effective in adolescent girls.

RESUMO

The educational progress of the university students and its associated factors are one of the preferred fields of study for researcher and the educational managers of the medical Universities. This study was aimed to determine the associated factors with the educational progress of the students of Iran University of Medical Sciences in 2009-10. This cross-sectional study was performed in 2009-2010 at Iran University of Medical Sciences among 670 samples. The necessary data was collected from SAMA site and the educational section of the university which included demographic and educational information [total grade point average, the number of failed courses, and failed semesters]. The data was analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, non-parametric, linear and logistic regression utilizing SPSS software version 15. The highest mean belonged to Psychiatry Institute and the lowest to the School of Medicine. Also, the highest number of failed courses was in School of Medicine. In total 6.28% of the students had failed courses and 4.8% had failed semesters. The variables for failed courses, failed semesters total grade point average, gender, school, educational level, quota system and marital status were used as covariates for the RM with the outcome variables of total grade point average and the number failed courses and failed semesters. Also, the same variables were used for logistic regression analysis failed courses and failed semesters. The variables of gender, educational level, and school are the most important factors influencing the educational progress. Accepting more female and post-graduate students, using native quota system and providing good accommodationcan facilitate the educational progress. Accepting more medical and post-graduate students without enough facilities can lead to educational retardation

RESUMO

To determine the survival of beta-thalassemia major patients with transfusion, and its related factors in Southeast of Iran. This cross-sectional study was performed in Zahedan, Iran, in 2007. The sample included patients who were referred from all over the Zahedan Thalassemia Center from 1998 to 2006. The data were collected using the patients' records, which were recorded by the staff during transfusion. The data included demographic and medical information blood group, blood RH, the kind of transfused blood [KTB], annual number of transfusions [ANOT], accompanied diseases [AD], Hemoglobin [Hb] and ferritin level. For data analysis, the Kaplan-Meyer method, and Log Rank test together with Cox Regression were used. Forty-six of 578 patients died and 99% had survived for the first year. The ages survival proportions were 5 [97.9%], 10 97%, 15 [92.1%], and 20 [81.2%] years. The survival time showed significant relationships with the ANOT p=0.0053, KTB p=0.003, Hb p=0.002 and ferritin level p=0.0087, and AD p=0.000. Using regular transfusion, paying attention to screening of transfused blood, increasing the families' knowledge on the disease to prevent the bearing of thalassemia fetus, are recommended; finally, the detection and treating of the AD, are of great importance to extend the lifetime of the patients

RESUMO

The pre-internship [PI] exam is the most important examination of medical students which can assess their abilities in passing the general medicine. To determine the effective factors on the pre-internship score and result at Zahedan University of Medical Sciences. The research was a cross-sectional on 63 medical students participating in pre-internship examinations in Zahedan University of Medical Sciences in 2000. The mean scores of basic sciences, physiopathology, clinical, total and the scores of ten important courses of pre-internship exam and the demographic variables were recorded and analyzed. The failing rate was 20.4%, the relative risks of failing were 3.6, 3.7, 6.1, 10.9 and 11.6 for the students with non-district group in quota system, high age, more than 5.5 year education period [to pre-internship], with clinical score mean and total mean lower than the mean of all participants, respectively and it was significant. Also, the mean of pre-internship scores was significantly different based on marital status, situation in quota system, age, education period. A high correlation was observed between pre-internship score and total scores mean, physiopathology, basic sciences and clinical scores, respectively [0.79, 0.75, 0.73 and 0.73]. Age, quota system, education period, the clinical score mean, infections diseases, pharmacology and psychiatry scores are the most important factors influencing the exams results, due to high and significant relative risks. Marital status, quota system, age and education period cause the students taking part in a pre-internship exam to get different means
