RESUMO

Intramuscular cavernous hemangiomas represent less than 1% of all hemangiomas. Typical presentation is a soft-tissue mass and/or pain without cutaneous changes. Whereas calcification of hemangiomas is common; ossification of these lesions is very rare. We describe a case of ossified intramuscular hemangioma of quadriceps presented with painless knee extension contracture and thigh mass

RESUMO

To determine the efficacy of three different antiseptic solutions [Control group [I], Antibiotic solution - Neomycin and polymyxin [II], Chlorhexidine 0.4% [III], and povidone - iodine 10% [IV]] in disinfecting contaminated bone fragments. Under sterile conditions, the femora of 12 rabbits were removed and cut into six millimeter pieces. A total of 200 bone specimens were obtained. All 200 specimens were dropped on the operating room floor for fifteen seconds and assigned to one of four experimental groups. Group I samples were cultured after immersion in normal saline solution [Control group]. In other three groups, prior to culture the samples, they were washed with normal saline for ninety seconds and placed in an antibiotic solution [Neomycin and Polymyxin] [group II], Chlorhexidine 0.4% [group III], and povidone-iodine 10% [group IV] respectively. In group I, 22 of 50 specimens had positive cultures. Of 50 specimens of group II and IV, positive cultures were found in 3 and 2 grafts respectively after 10 days whereas no positive cultures were detected in any samples of group III. Chlorhexidine 0.4% seems to be the best antiseptic solution for discontaminating the contaminated bone samples although it did not have any significant difference with povidone-iodine and other antibiotic solution

RESUMO

Larsen syndrome has complex clinical manifestations accompanying different congenital joint dislocations. Therefore, early diagnosis, correct treatment and prevention of complications are essential. This study was performed on 10 cases of Larsen syndrome and their clinical / radiological aspects were assessed. In our review, there were 6 male [cases 1 to 6] and 4 female patients. The youngest and oldest patients at the time of referral were 3 and 51 years old, respectively. An interesting aspect is that hypertelorism and nose widening were detected in all cases. In spine, six patients had Spina bifida, whereas hip dislocation was also detected in eight cases. The significant points were high riding DDH in a 46- year old female patient and bilateral femoral head subluxation in a 51- year old male patient. Knee dislocation was seen in 9 patients. The above two cases had neglected knee dislocation, but acceptable knee function was reported. In upper extremities of eight patients, radial head posterior dislocation was seen. A 5- year old male patient had distal humerus physical deformity. All patients had 2nd metacarpal base deformity [double epiphysis in 2nd metacarpal bone]. Concerning multiple joints involvement in the syndrome, accurate physical examination is essential. Prioritization and staged management of the involvements is recommended.

RESUMO

To determine the efficacy of different antiseptic solutions [Control group [I], Antibiotic solution [II], Chlorhexidine 0.4% [III], and povidone - iodine 10% [IV]] in sterilizing contaminated osteochondral plugs. Under sterile conditions, the femoral head and condyles of 20 rabbits were removed and cut into equal osteochondral pieces. A total of 200 osteochondral specimens were obtained. All 200 specimens were dropped on the operating room floor for fifteen seconds and assigned to one of four experimental groups. Group I samples were cultured after washing with normal saline solution [Control group]. In other three groups, prior to culturing process, samples were placed in an antibiotic solution after washing with normal saline [Neomycin and Polymyxin] [group II], Chlorhexidine 0.4% [group III], and povidone - iodine 10% [group IV], respectively. In group I, 25 of 50 specimens had positive cultures. Of 50 specimens of group II, III and IV, no positive cultures were found after 10 days. all three agents including antibiotic solution, povidone-iodine 10% and chlorhexidine 0.4% seem effective in sterilizing the contaminated osteochondral samples. According to the literature, povidone-iodine has no negative effect on the cartilage metabolism and seems to be a proper choice of decontaminating solution for osteochondral plugs. To the best of the authors' knowledge, such a study on the contaminated osteochondral specimen has not been previously reported in the literature

RESUMO

All perilunate fracture-dislocations combine bone avulsions, ligament disruption and fractures in different forms. The most frequent pattern is the dorsal transscaphoid perilunate fracture-dislocation. The reported risk of missed initial diagnosis in perilunate dislocations is as high as 20%. Concerning pathomechanics of the perilunate fracture-dislocation, it should be noted that most dorsal injuries usually result from a fall on the outstretched hand or motor vehicle accidents although other mechanisms are also mentioned. We describe here a case of dorsal trans-scaphoid trans-capitate perilunate fracture-dislocation together with posterior olecranon fracture-dislocation of the left upper extremity. To the best of the authors' knowledge, such a case with this concomitant elbow fracture-dislocation has not been previously reported in the literature

RESUMO

Lipoma is the most common soft tissue tumor but the presence of osseous component within the tumor is quite rare. Some studies show that less than 1% of lipomas were ossified. We describe the histological, radiological and diagnostic features of an ossified intramuscular lipoma. To the best of the authors' knowledge, a symptomatic ossified intramuscular lipoma without any cortical erosion and hyperostosis has not been previously reported in the literature

RESUMO

Patella is a relative uncommon site for chondroblastoma. Most of cases of chondroblastoma in patella reported in literature are treated with patellectomy. We treated a large chondroblastic lesion in patella of an 18-year-old male with curettage, burring and bone graft and the result was satisfactory after 3 years post operation
