RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this retrospective report was to analyze long-term survival rate of sintered porous-surfaced dental implant (Endopore(R) Dental Implant system, Innova Corporation, Toronto, ON, Canada). METHODS: 61 partially edentulous patients were received a total of 127 Endopore dental implants in the maxilla. Of the 127 implants, 24 implants were restored with individual (ie, non-splinted) crowns, while 103 implants were splinted to other implants. Medical records and radiographs were evaluated and analyzed by the cumulative survival rate, location of implants, implants length and diameter, crown/implant ratio and whether the implant was splinted. Chi squire test was used statistically. RESULT: Of the 127 implants, 8 implants (6.3%) were removed and and cumulative survival rate was 93.7%. CONCLUSION: Endopore implants showed satisfactory results after up to 8 years function periods in the edentulous posterior maxilla.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical usefulness of ICF (International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health) through correlation among existing functional evaluation tools and examined environmental factors affecting its function. METHOD: One hundred eight persons with disabilities living in Seoul were randomly selected according to disability severity categories. Functional Independence Measure (FIM), modified Barthel index (MBI) and ICF were examined and subjects were interviewed by trained rehabilitation doctors and occupational therapists. We compared correlation between these three functional measurements. We coded environmental factors affecting function. That was used in second level of 74 ICF items. RESULTS: The average of FIM, modified Barthel index, capacity and performance scores of ICF was 112.76, 92.97, 5.74 and 3.19. There was a statistical correlation among FIM, Barthel index, and ICF. The facilitator chapters among ICF's environmental factors were support and relationships (51.9%), attitudes (45.8%) in order. Most facilitated second level domains among the 68 items were immediate family (66.77%) and health professionals (52.8%). The most barrier chapters in ICF were product and a technology (19.5%), environment changes (15.5%) in order. Most barrier second level domains were design, construction and technology of buildings for public use (37%) and assets (37.0%). CONCLUSION: ICF correlates with the existing functional evaluation tool and can facilitate management of activity and participation by linking the result with the environmental factors, which may exacerbate or minimize them

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare the disability grades previously evaluated and registered, with the re-evaluated ones for individuals with disability living in Seoul. METHOD: Thee hundred and eleven people with disability living in Seoul were selected by the hierarchical systematic extraction method. Their disability grade was re-evaluated in the otolaryngology, ophthalmology, rehabilitation outpatient clinic or via home visit. And the disability level of each person was evaluated by the Korean Activities of Daily Living (K-ADL). RESULTS: Two hundred and twenty nine people with disability were re-evaluated on their disability grades. One hundred and thirty four (58.5%) cases had the same disability grade as initially evaluated. Thirty three cases were re-adjusted to a higher disability grade and sixty two cases to a lower grade. The K-ADL scores of people with brain lesion and spine/spinal cord injury were higher than those of other type of disability, which indicated a higher level of disability. CONCLUSION: When disability grades were re-evaluated, discrepancy rate was 41.5%. For proper management in the process of disability registration, it is imperative to implement a policy, which ensures the re-evaluation of the disability grade at a regular interval, the clear guidelines for grading as well as the competency of the evaluators.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To investigate the effect of task-related circuit training in old aged stroke patients. METHODS: Twenty-four old aged stroke patients were randomly assignedto the experimental or the control group. Experimental groups participated in task-related circuit training three times a week and conventional physical therapy twice a week for 6 weeks. Control groups participated in conventional physical therapy five times a week for 6 weeks. Task-related circuit training was designed into a circuit with a series of workstation to improve the performance of functional tasks and motivation. Functional improvement was evaluated by measuring Brunnstrom stage, Berg Balance Scale, step test, 6min walking test, and Modified Barthel index. Subjects were surveyed for the their respective program. RESULTS: Both groups demonstrated significant improvement(p<0.05) in Berg Balance Scale, step test, 6min walking test, Modified Barthel index but no significant difference between experimental and control group. Subjects participated in task-related circuit training were more satisfied with their program in motivation and functional improvement, but not significantly compared with the control group. CONCLUSION: Task-related circuit training improves flexibility, balance, endurance and functional capacity of activity of daily living in old aged stroke patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: We investigated the demographic characteristics of stroke patients over 65 years old and wanted to see the effects of rehabilitation therapies by examining the changing status of patients before and after treatment by comparing with other patients under 65 years old. METHODS: We went through medical records arranged by making a comparative groups of older patients and other younger patients who both admitted within recent 4 years. Accompanied medical problems are categorized by ICD-10, the functional statuses are classified into FIM score at admission, and FIM efficiency at discharge. RESULTS: Between two groups, according to cause of a stroke, the existence of spouse, gender, there is statistical difference and, at admission, functional level of older patients was lower but it was not observed that extent of functional change of the result of rehabilitation therapy with distinction of age. Accompanied diseases were average 4.6 and is cardiovascular disease with the highest rates. CONCLUSION: Since the explosion of an aging population is regarded as serious national problem, people have been trying to find diversified treatments against geriatrics. And the data will be utilized as useful materials for better direction where rehabilitation treatment against a stroke should aim.

RESUMO

Treatment methods of mandibular condylar fracture were conservative and surgical method. Surgical method of mandibular high condylar fracture was very difficult because approach and internal fixation of small size fracture fragment were difficult. So there is a tendency to select conservative method over surgical method for guiding a stable occlusion and avoiding TMJ disorder and growth disturbance, minimizing pain and deviation during function. But, in case of mandibular high condylar fracture patient who has no biting teeth on posterior teeth area, guiding a stable occlusion and conservative functional treatment were very difficult. In this case, patient was 62years old male. He had fracture of mandibular symphysis, right mandibular body, left mandibular high condyle. We treated the patient for mandibular symphysis and right mandibular body fracture area with surgical method. But left mandibular high condylar fracture area was difficult to treat with surgical method. So we selected a conservative functional method on left mandibular high condylar fracture area. We intended recovery of vertical dimension and stable occlusion with implantation of immediate provisional implant on maxillar and mandibular posterior teeth area, and temporary crown. And then patient did mandibular functional movement and his mandibular function was recoverd.

RESUMO

One of the most difficult problems to damage in dentistry is an odontogenic infection. These infections may range from low-grade, well-localized infections that require only minimal treatment to a severe, life-threatenig fascial space infection. Although the overwhelming majority of odontogenic infections are easily managed by minor surgical procedures and supportive medical therapy that includes antibiotic administration, the practitioner must constantly bear in mind that these infections may become severe in a very short time. We made an investigation was targeting on 78 male and 47 female patients (125 patients in total) who had been hospitalized because of the fascial space abscess on the oral and maxillofacial area and gained a complete recovery in Daegu Catholic University Hospital, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from January 1999 to December 2003. By tracing their charts, we could grasp the characteristics such as age, gender, the time of breakout and specific areas of the attacks, making a conclusive study of the statistical analysis and finally, we could reach conclusions. Now, we report the conclusion from the investigation with the literature. The proportion of males and females was approximately 3 to 2, and in age group, patients under 10 years old marked the highest, 22.4%. The patients between the age of 10 and 40 were only 14.4%, yet those who were between 40 and 80 marked 53.6% in contrast. In the monthly distribution, the order was Dec.(13.6%)-Sep.(12%)-Jan.(10.4%) and in seasonal distribution, it was winter(30.4%)-fall(28%)- summer(24.4%)- spring(19.2%). Considering the medical history, D.M. was the highest which was 30.3%, hypertension marked 24.4%, and the patients with both D.M. and hypertension were 9.0%. The major cause of infection of oral and maxillofacial areas was odontogenic infection, which marked about 96%, and especially the cases related to dental caries occurred most frequently, which was 51.2%. In the number of relaxed fascial space, single fascial space was 81.6%, and in the degree of relaxation of fascial space, the buccal space abscess marked 40.8%, following submandibular space abscess, which was 30.4%.
