RESUMO

Alnus sibirica (AS) geographically distributes in Korea, Japan, Northeast China and Russia. The bark of this plant had been used for antipyretic, expectorant, anti-phlogistic, antitussive, anti-asthmatic and as a health tea for alcoholism. Recently, we studied various biological activities of AS and the isolated diarylheptanoid. In present study, we conducted fermentation of AS (FAS) and isolated two diarylheptanoid (hirsutenone and muricarpone B). Moreover, we established the validation and contents determinations of the two compounds by HPLC on FAS.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The optimal management of cutaneous herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella zoster virus (VZV) infections requires rapid and accurate diagnostic methods. Direct immunofluorescence (DIF) is known to be rapid and sensitive, but fresh samples are needed to ensure accuracy. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the usefulness of DIF and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in patients with HSV and VZV infections. METHODS: From January 2012 to August 2013, a total of 134 patients (53 patients with HSV and 81 patients with VZV) were included in this study. Tissue smears were collected from the base of fresh vesicular lesions, and each IF slide was stained with an FITC-conjugated VZV-specific and HSV-specific monoclonal antibody. Viral DNA amplification by PCR was also examined. We compared the positivity rates of DIF and PCR according to virus type and skin lesion duration. RESULTS: The overall positivity rate of PCR (94.0%) was higher than that of DIF (79.1%), and this difference was statistically significant (p<0.0001). DIF was positive in 67.9% and 86.4% of HSV and VZV cases, respectively, and this difference was statistically significant p<0.0001). The positivity rate of DIF decreased in skin lesions older than 7 days; however, PCR showed no significant differences in positivity rates according to skin lesion duration. CONCLUSION: DIF is a rapid and discriminating test for early lesions of HSV and VZV. PCR is an especially sensitive test for old lesions, and aids in making a definitive diagnosis when combined with DIF.

RESUMO

An ultrasonic device for medical skin care is used to gently exfoliate the skin of dead skin cells and impurities. Ultrasound waves help loosen and remove oil, dirt and cellular debris from pores. Ponophoresis or sonophoresis is the use of ultrasound to increase percutaneous absorption of drugs, serums, lotions, creams and masques to a depth where it is more effective and beneficial. For improved results and safer procedures, we need to know the contraindications and adverse effects of ultrasonic treatments. Therefore, we summarized and reviewed the issue of safety including contraindications, cautions, and adverse events.

RESUMO

Taxifolin glycoside is a new drug candidate for the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD). Many drugs cause side effects such as long QT syndrome by blocking the human ether-a-go-go related gene (hERG) K+ channels. To determine whether taxifolin glycoside would block hERG K+ channels, we recorded hERG K+ currents using a whole-cell patch clamp technique. We found that taxifolin glycoside directly blocked hERG K+ current in a concentration-dependent manner (EC50=9.6+/-0.7 microM). The activation curve of hERG K+ channels was negatively shifted by taxifolin glycoside. In addition, taxifolin glycoside accelerated the activation time constant and reduced the onset of the inactivation time constant. These results suggest that taxifolin glycoside blocks hERG K+ channels that function by facilitating activation and inactivation process.

RESUMO

Necrobiosis lipoidica (NL) is a chronic granulomatous skin disease typified by indurated plaques on the shin. Although this condition is strongly associated with diabetes mellitus, its etiology and pathogenesis remains unknown. Localization of NL to the lower extremities suggests that local injury may be a contributing factor to the disease. A healthy 38-year-old man presented with localized erythematous to yellowish plaques on his right thigh that developed over several years. The lesion developed in the scar where suture had been done for laceration repair 25 years ago. A biopsy specimen showed degenerated collagen with surrounding palisading granulomas. Numerous lymphocytes and multinucleated giant cells were infiltrated throughout the reticular dermis. Plasma cells aggregation was found at the dermal subcutaneous junction.

RESUMO

Granuloma annulare is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by erythematous or flesh-colored papular eruptions of annular configuration. In a HIV positive patient, granuloma annulare could be confused with other papular diseases because it could be presented as atypical appearances due to the defect of the immune system. Moreover, without specific treatment for granuloma annulare, the lesions could be improved by systemic anti-retroviral therapy.

RESUMO

Vestibular papillomatosis is an uncommon benign condition that can occur on labia minora and is considered as a normal anatomical variant of the vulva, as the female equivalent of pearly penile papules in men. Because vestibular papillomatosis resemble condyloma, it can be misdiagnosed as condyloma acuminatum and can lead to unnecessary treatment. We herein report a case of a 27-year-old women with multiple skin-colored soft papules on labia minora. The lesion was distributed symmetrically on the inner of labia minora and showed a separate base of individual projection. To the best of our knowledge, this is a unique case reported in the Korean dermatological literature.

RESUMO

A calcifying aponeurotic fibroma is a rare benign fibrous tumor with well-characterized histopathological features. Calcifying aponeurotic fibromas are generally slowly-growing lesions related to tendons and aponeuroses in the distal extremities of children and adolescents. While the neoplasm is usually asymptomatic, cases of progressive local discomfort have been reported. The exact etiology of this neoplasm is unknown, and there is frequently no history of trauma or local irritating factors. A 10-year-old female presented with a 2.5x2.0 cm, subcutaneous mass on the right sole 4 years after she bumped against a table. The histopathologic examination showed a poorly circumscribed fibrotic mass with foci of chondroid differentiation and calcification. These findings were consistent with the diagnosis of a calcifying aponeurotic fibroma. After total excision of the mass, there has been no recurrence of the lesion in 8 months of follow-up.

RESUMO

Childhood granulomatous periorificial dermatitis is a distinctive granulomatous form of perioral dermatitis, characterized by a monomorphous, small papular eruption around the mouth, nose, and eyes. It occurs primarily in prepubertal children. We present a case of a 12-year-old boy with multiple, asymptomatic, erythematous papules on the perioral, perinasal and periorbital areas for 5 months. Histopathological examination revealed upper dermal and perifollicular granulomatous infiltrate. After using oral dapsone 25 mg daily for 7 weeks, the skin lesions were considerably improved. But, 3 months after discontinuence of dapsone, exacerbation of the skin lesions occurred.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Atopic Dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing inflammatory skin disease that is usually observed in patients with an individual or familial history of atopic diseases, and AD is precipitated by environmental factors, including mite antigens. AD is known to be generated by an imbalance of both Th1 and Th2 cytokines. However, the exact etiology of AD is unclear. The leaves of Acer ginnala (AGL) have been demonstrated to have an anti-oxidant effect. OBJECTIVE: We wanted to investigate the effect of AGL on AD-like skin lesions and the other factors related to an immune response. METHODS: The AGL was applied to the AD-like skin lesions on the backs of NC/Nga mice. The efficacy of AGL in the NC/Nga mice was evaluated by the changes of severity of the skin lesions (a modified SCORAD). Blood was collected from the retro-orbital area and the abdominal vena cava. The levels of eosinophils, immunoglobulin (Ig) E and Th2-related cytokines in the blood were measured. RESULTS: The topical application of AGL suppressed the development of AD-like skin lesions. The percent of blood eosinophils was decreased after treatment with AGL. The serum IgE and Th2-related cytokine levels were decreased after treatment with AGL compared with those treated with base cream (the vehicle treated AD group). The IL-4, IL-5 and IL-13 levels were lower than those of the vehicle treated AD group. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that AGL may exert an inhibitory effect on atopic dermatitis.
