RESUMO

Septal perforation repair is a challenge procedure for the surgeon. Septal perforation repair was performed in 20 patients [12 males, 8 females; age range 19-45 years, mean age 31.2 years] presenting with septal perforation. Sizes of these perforations ranged between 0.5 and 4.5 cm with a mean of 2.29 cm. The external open approach was used and the perforation was repaired using bilateral intranasal mucosal advancement flaps with a connective tissue interposition graft [conchal chondroperichondrial graft in 10 patients and. acellular dermal allograft in 10 patients]. The cases were followed-up for a mean duration of 7.7 months. The success rate was 80% in both groups. Our study concluded that the external approach is helpful in septal perforation repair. Use of bilateral intranasal mucosal advancement flaps with connective tissue graft interposition is associated with high success rate and the success rate is the same for both conchal chondroperichondrial graft and acellular dermal allograft. The availability and cost effectiveness are in favor of the conchal chondroperichondrial graft while the availability of different sizes of the graft is in favor of the acellular dermal allograft.
