RESUMO

Some 105 preschool and school aged children with different clinical manifestations were picked up at random from out-patients clinic at Tanta University Hospitals. Sera were examined for antibodies against Leishmaniasis by I.H A. reagents of Behringwerke Institute. Three children showed diagnostic titers [1: 128 in two and 1: 256 in one]. The results were discussed

RESUMO

Indirect haemagglutination test proved to be sensitive and specific for the diagnosis of human leishmaniasis. As far as dogs are concerned, no data are available about its specificity. In the present study, the specificity was tested against two common parasites of dogs, T. gondii and E. granulosus. The results showed that leishmaniasis I.H A. reaction at dilution 1: 16 is not specific. It may be a cross reaction with echinococcosis or toxoplasmosis

RESUMO

The effect of acute and chronic infections by Plasmodium yoelii nigeriensis on the spleen, thymus and liver of mice and rats, and on their antibody response has been studied. Malaria caused a significant increase in splenic weights, lymphocytic hyperplasia of splenic follicles with numerous giant cells in the red pulps, congestion and haemorrhages and depletion of thymic cortex. The liver cells showed hydropic then fatty, degeneration. The succinic dehydrogenase activity of damaged cells decreased, while the phosphatase activity increased. The choline-esterase activity was increased. The reticuloendothelial cells, Kupffer cells and phagocytes showed high alkaline phosphatase activity. In avirulent infection the thymus showed early lymphocytic depletion then returned to normal. Most of the liver cells returnal to normal with normal enzymatic activity, but small foci of necrosis were seen. It was concluded from these results that acute infection mainly produced toxic effects, whereas chronic infection produced immunological changes
