RESUMO

Seroimmunological examination of all acute flaccid paralytic cases attending Alexandria's main pediatric hospitals in 1992 was done and their vaccination history was taken. It was revealed that 75% of the cases were from rural areas. The male to female ratio was 2.6:1 and 75% of the cases were below one year of age. Most of the paralytic cases were due to poliovirus 3 [65.4%], followed by poliovirus 1 [36.1%]. None of the fully immunized cases showed protective IgG antibodies against poliovirus 3 and 28.6% of them did not show any IgG against the 3 poliovirus strains

RESUMO

The polio immunization services of two urban and two rural PHC facilities were assessed by evaluating the vaccine potency, record review for the year 1992 and observation of the services provided. It was revealed that only 3% of the previously vaccinated preschool children showed protective IgG antibodies against the 3 poliovirus strains and 65.3% of them were completely seronegative to all poliovirus strains. The most prevalent seronegativity was related to poliovirus III [96%] followed by poliovirus II [91.1%] and lastly poliovirus I [66.7%]. The rural PHC facilities showed lower vaccination coverage rates and higher seronegativity rates to the 3 poliovirus strains among the previously vaccinated preschool children than the urban health care facilities
