RESUMO

Zinc [Zn] is the second most abundant trace element in human, which can't be stored in the body, thus regular dietary intake is required. This review explained the physiological and pathogenesis roles of zinc in men's health and its potentials in germination, quality of sperm, and fertilization. Our investigation showed that Zn contained many unique properties in human, especially males. The antioxidant quality is one of them. Also, the increased reactive oxygen species levels in the seminal plasma of men who are both infertile and smokers influence the Zn content of seminal plasma in a way that physiology of spermatozoa can be affected as well. Moreover, Zn acts as a toxic epercussionagainst heavy metals and cigarette inflam-matory agents. Zinc as a hormone balancer helps hormones such as testosterone, prostate and sexual healthand functions as an antibacterial agent in men's urea system. It plays a role in epithelial integrity, showing that Zn is essential for main-taining the lining of the reproductive organs and may have a regulative role in the progress of capacitation and acrosome reaction. In contrast, Zn deficiency impedes spermatogenesis and is a reason for sperm abnormalities and has a negative effect on serum testosterone concentration. Based on these findings, Zn microelement is very essential for male fertility. It could be considered as a nutrient marker with many potentials in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of male infertility

RESUMO

Hypertension is one of the major risk factors of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Blood pressure measurement is an essential condition for diagnosis of hypertension. The objective of the study is to assess blood pressure measurement by in health care centres in tehran, and compare it with AHA[1] standards. In this descriptive and comparative study, observation were performed with a list according to the AHA criteria. Five hundred professionals took part in the study. After measuring blood pressure, the level of concordance between the way the procedure was performed and the recommended one was assessed. 58% of nurses and nurse's students followed the recommended procedures as set before. The other categories of health professionals [Associate Nurse, physicians and Medicine Students] abided by approximately 42%. Educational activities should be implemented to improve standard blood pressure measurement specially among the different kinds of health professionals especially for those who aren't nurses

RESUMO

The complex metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus, is a major human health concern in the world and is estimated to affect 300 million people by the year 2025. Several drugs such as sulfonylureas and biguanides are presently available to reduce hyperglycemia in diabetes mellitus. These drugs have side effects and thus searching for a new class of compounds is essential to overcome this problems. A series of seven novel N-[4-phenylthiazol-2-yl]benzenesulfonamides derivatives were synthesized and assayed in-vivo to investigate their antidiabetic activities by streptozotocin-induced model in rat. These derivatives showed considerable biological efficacy when compared to glibenclamide, a potent and well-known antidiabetic agent, as a reference drug. Four of the compounds were effective, amongst which 13 show more prominent activity at 100 mg/Kg p.o. The experimental results are statistically significant at p < 0.05 level

RESUMO

A 41-year old mentally retarded patient presented acutely with a 3 day history of vomiting and absolute constipation. Intestinal obstruction was diagnosed following an abdominal x ray. At laparotomy, a left paraduodenal hernia was present, without incarceration of small bowel. The herniated loops were reduced and the hernia orifice closed. The anatomy, treatment and importance of considering this uncommon diagnosis when examining a patient with acute small bowel obstruction are discussed

RESUMO

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome is a rare condition characterized by mucocutaneous pigmentation, polyposis and an increased cancer risk at a number of gastrointestinal and extra intestinal organs. We present a patient with a history of gastrointestinal bleeding with no mucocutaneous pigmentation. Upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed multiple polyps located in the deuodenum and colon. Histopathological evaluation of the polyps revealed hamartomatous polyps of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome

RESUMO

Our aim was to determine the relationship between genuine premature ejaculation and serum and seminal plasma magnesium. In a case-control study carried out between January 2002 and December 2003, 19 patients with premature ejaculation were evaluated and compared with 19 patients without premature ejaculation. Patients with organic and psychogenic causes were excluded. Seminal plasma and serum magnesium levels were measured using atomic absorption spectrophotometery. Seminal plasma magnesium levels in study patients [94.73 +/- 10.87 mg/L] were significantly lower than they were in controls [116.68 +/- 11.63 mg/L, P<0.001], but there were no such differences regarding serum magnesium levels [study patients, 20.26 +/- 2.66 mg/L; controls, 20.73 +/- 2.80 mg/L]. Semen-to-serum-magnesium ratio was significantly lower in patients with premature ejaculation [P<0.001]. Also, a reverse relationship between body mass index and genuine premature ejaculation was found [P=0.027]. Genuine premature ejaculation has a significant relationship with decreased levels of seminal plasma magnesium. Further studies are needed to clarify the actual role of magnesium in the physiology of the male reproductive tract, especially its association with premature ejaculation
