RESUMO

Background: Social media social media are caused a revolution in the last century. Almost everyone has access to social media with different ways. Many students use Social media for contact with each other, following updating news, and help them in their study. The study aimed to estimate the prevalence, pattern of Social media and its effects on social health of Fayoum university students. Methods: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study involving 633 students at Fayoum university. Results: As regards social media use, the majority of the student (94.2%) was using at least one type of SM. More than half of them (55.5%) visit (3-5) SM sites. About one third of the students (30.9%) stated that they spend (3-4) hours daily. Regarding effect of social media, one third of the students (30.2%) thought that SM sites decrease friendship level, (73.0%) limit sport time, and has a negative effect on the learning process (62.4%). The motivations for using social media were the search for news (38.1%) and making friendship (31.2%). Multiple logistic regression for factors associated with using social media revealed that age more than 20 years and male gender were significantly associated with using social media (p=0.003 and 0.016, respectively). Conclusions: The majority of students use Social media for different reasons. Social media reduced social interrelations of the students may set down their study. So, increase awareness about the hazards of social media among students including their physical and psychosocial health. Highlighted the balanced use of social media for proper improving the learning process through prompt uses of information and communication.

RESUMO

Percutaneous closure of patent ductus arteriosus [PDA] is done in the cardiac catheterization laboratory, usually under fluoroscopic and angiographic guidance. The aortogram is used for assessing PDA size and shape the pre-device implantation. Additionally, post-device aortograms are applied for the assessment of device position, profile and residual shunt. Angiograms expose patient to radiation and possible untoward effects of contrast media. Recently, transthoracic echocardiography has been utilized to guide in PDA closure to avoid radiation exposure as well as contrast material. On two occasions, we were obligated by special circumstances to close the PDA under echocardiography guidance. First case was a 6-month baby girl with mild signs of heart failure having moderate size PDA. She underwent device closure under transthoracic echocardiogram as the angiographic system had stopped working during the procedure. Second case was a 6-year girl, weighting 16-kg with chronic renal failure. She had moderate size PDA closed by device under transthoracic echocardiographic, guidance avoiding the use of contrast agent due to chronic renal failure

RESUMO

Background/Aim: Heat shock protein 70 [HSP70] is a member of heat shock protein family It has strong cytoprotective properties that prevent cell death triggered by stressful stimuli The aim of this work was to study the immunohistochemical expression of HSP70 in chronic HCV biopsies among Egyptian patients

Methods: Immunohistochemical stain using HSP70 was performed on 30 chronic hepatitis C needle biopsies, with different degrees of disease severity

Results: Positive HSP70 immunoreactivity was detected in 12/30 [40%] of the chronic hepatitis specimens with weak to moderate intensity. No statistically significant difference was detected between the mean of HSP70 expression and the following parameters; age, gender, necroinflammatory grade and stage of fibrosis [p=0.109, p=0.874, p=0.342 and p=0.182] respectively

Conclusion: Detection of HSP70 in chronic hepatitis specimens suggested that chronic inflammation and fibrosis act as stressful conditions which result in induction of HSP70 expression. HSP70 prevents stress induced apoptosis which may enhance viral replication by preserving the viral factory. Therefore, we can suggested that HSP70 may act as a therapeutic target to treat HCV infection by targeting host proteins as opposed to viral proteins to minimize the development of resistance to therapy

RESUMO

Although many studies showed that pulmonary arteriovenous malformations [PAVM] are relatively rare disorders, they are still an important part of differential diagnosis of common pulmonary problems such as hypoxemia, dyspnea on exertion and pulmonary nodules. A thirty-five-year-old female patient presented with low oxygen saturation six hours post simple vaginal delivery. The patient was investigated by echocardiography, chest x-ray and CT pulmonary angiography, which confirmed the diagnosis of pulmonary arteriovenous malformations [PAVM]. Pulmonary conventional angiogram with transcatheter coil embolization was performed to treat the condition. The patient had uneventful recovery following coil embolization of pulmonary arteriovenous malformations

RESUMO

Increase in cosmetic and prescription use of lenses is proportional to lens- related complications. Lens users in the UAE are particularly at risk of infection due to the foreign bodies and dust particles in the air during occurrences of sandstorms. To estimate the prevalence of contact lens use among university students, to assess the frequency of complications in contact lens users based on the type of lenses used, to assess the level of compliance amongst users regarding hygiene practices and to compare the frequency of complications between contact lens users and non-users. A cross sectional study was done among 241 students of Gulf Medical University, Ajman. The study included students from all the different faculties. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed, after approval by the Ethical Committee. All the data obtained from the questionnaires were entered in Microsoft Excel and analyzed using SPSS 20 software. Of the students participating 26.3% were contact lens users. Of the contact lens users, 41% used daily wear contact lenses. Contact lens users suffered most frequently from red eyes, dry eyes, burning and itching. 23.2% non-contact lens users showed dry eyes. 73.3% of contact lens users were found to practice safe hygiene and handling of contact lenses. Contact lens use is not highly prevalent amongst students. The most common eye complications experienced by the students were red eyes, dry eyes, burning and itching. Dry eyes were a frequently experienced symptom by both non-contact lens users and contact lens users. The majority of the students practiced safe handling

RESUMO

Although brief and acute psychoses are usually dramatic in presentation, they usually have benign course. Studies investigating clinical features and changes in diagnosis between psychotic episodes have differed in design. However, some consistent findings have emerged. This study seeks to clarify and extend these features by describing and comparing clinical diagnostic stability in a group of subjects with first episode psychosis diagnosed as acute psychotic disorder [psychogenic psychosis] followed up for 6 years. The study comprises a retrospective evaluation of case records of 161 patients admitted for the first time with first episode psychosis. Among this group a subgroup of 69 psychogenic psychoses were followed up with special reference to stability of diagnosis within a period of 6 years. Forty-six patients [67.6%] were male, 22 [32.4%] were female and data were missing in one case-record. There was no significant statistical difference between gender and diagnosis. The mean age was 27.5 years [13-45 years]. There were criteria, which distinguish acute psychotic disorder [psychogenic psychosis]. These criteria include acute onset with short duration of untreated psychosis, precipitating factors, adjusted pre-morbid personality, no family history of mental disorder, short duration of admission, full recovery in most of cases, with no further admission. Nearly 80% of the patients have never been admitted again in 6 years time. Our findings show a high level of agreement with the original concept of psychogenic psychosis; however, these bear little relationship to the DSM-IV [1994] and ICD-10 [WHO, 1993] criteria for brief or acute psychotic disorder

RESUMO

A 7 year-old girl was admitted with history of low-grade fever, weight loss and occasional cough for the last 6 months. Tuberculosis was suspected, for which antituberculous treatment was initiated. Chest X-ray demonstrated calcification of the pericardium with chest miliary shadowing. CT chest was done showing very fine sharply defined miliary nodularity throughout both lungs without mediastinal lymphadenopathy. The patient was referred to paediatric cardiology service to rule out constrictive pericarditis. Clinical cardiac examination as well as the electrocardiogram was normal. Echocardiography and Doppler were done showing normal cardiac anatomy and function apart from the detected pericardial calcification. Doppler tracing in the hepatic vein as well as in the superior vena cava could clearly exclude any negative effect on diastolic cardiac function, which could occur in the setup of pericardial calcification. Doppler, instead helped to identify the chronic pulmonary disease by showing increased inflow velocity throughout inspiration

RESUMO

The primary aim of this work was to examine the socio-demographic, clinical correlates, the effect of medical treatment on the first episode psychosis in an Arabic country. A retrospective case note review, looking at first episode psychosis who were admitted to the in-patient psychiatric ward in Al Ain general hospital over 5 years. 161 patients with first episode psychosis were reviewed. In the 5-year period under the study, 161 aged 13-45 years with history of first episode psychosis were admitted to the psychiatric ward. They established a different clinical diagnoses according to ICD 10: 69 patients [42.9%] had a diagnosis of acute psychotic episode, 35 patients [21.7%] had a diagnosis of manic episode, 31 patients [19.3%] had a diagnosis of schizophrenia, 16 [9.9%] had depression with psychotic symptoms, 3 [1.9%] drug dependence, 1 [0.6%] persistent delusional disorder, and in 6 [3.7%] patients the data were missing. The mean age was 27.5 years [13-45 years] [SD=6.6], male/female ratio [1 10/49, 68.3%/30.4%]. There was a significant relationship between duration of untreated psychosis [DUP] and outcome, where the longer the DUP the more existence of residual symptoms on discharge [chi 2 =18.515, df=6, p=. 005]. In addition there was a significant relationship between social withdrawal symptom prior to admission and residual symptoms on discharge. Results of this study indicate that DUP, clinical features and type of medications may determine the outcome of first episode psychosis

RESUMO

Coronary anomalies are not rare [about 1'% of the general population] and may be associated with sudden dealth and ischemia and may cause difficulties in coronary interventions and errors in bypass surgery. The aim of this study is to demonstrate their incidence in the Sudanese patients and give a review on their classifications and clinical relevance- A retrospective study of 270 patients who had coronary angiography at Ahmed Gasim cardiac center from April, 2004 to August, 2005 Our study showed a rather higher rate of coronary anomalies [3%] but the pattern was not greatly different from the figures in the literature. Anomalies of origin were the most common [which may give difficulties in coronary interventions]. Potentially morbid anomaly with either the left anterior Ascending artery [LAD] or the left main coronary artery [LMCA] originating from the right coronary sinus was seen in 3 patients [1, 1%]. This study demonstrated that coronary anomalies are not rare in our patients and potentially serious anomaly may exist
