RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to measure in vivo effects of propofol, isoflurane and sevoflurane on apoptosis by measuring caspase-3 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-related apoptosis inducing ligand (TRAIL) blood level as apoptotic markers. METHODS: After obtaining ethical committee approval and informed written consents, sixty adult patients ASA I scheduled for open cholecystectomy participated in this study. They were randomally allocated into one of three equal groups to receive propofol infusion, low-flow isoflurane or sevoflurane for maintenance of anesthesia. Venous blood samples were collected preoperatively, immediately postoperative and after 24 hours to measure hemoglobin, hematocrit, creatinine, liver enzymes, serum TRAIL and caspase-3 levels. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in hematological markers and serum creatinine. Liver enzymes showed significant postoperative rise (P < 0.05). In Propofol group, TRAIL and caspase-3 levels were significantly elevated immediately postoperative then decreased significantly after 24-hours (P < 0.05). In Isoflurane group, immediate postoperative level of TRAIL was significantly higher than 24 hours reading and significantly lower than its level in Propofol group at the same timing meanwhile caspase-3 levels were comparable at different timings. In Sevoflurane group, TRAIL and caspase-3 levels increased significantly in both postoperative samples than preoperative level and than those of Isoflurane and Propofol groups after 24 hours concerning TRAIL (P & 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: This study concluded that isoflurane is superior and sevoflurane is the least effective among the three anesthetics in protection against apoptosis. This study neither proved nor excluded propofol-induced apoptosis. Further studies are required during lengthy procedure and in compromised patients.

RESUMO

Acute pancreatitis is a common and dreaded complication of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography [ERCP] patients. The study identified the incidence of post ERCP pancreatitis and role of serum calprotectin and ghrelin in its diagnosis. One hundred forty two patients underwent ERCP-related procedures were studied. Serum amylase, lipase, calprotectin and ghrelin concentrations were measured 24 hours after the procedure using ELISA, kinetic and colorimetric methods. Thirty two healthy controls were enrolled. In post ERCP group, mean level of amylase was 146.03 +/- 57.40 U/L, lipase 328.37 +/- 133.95 U/L, calprotectin 3.26 +/- 2.99 U/L and gherkin 2.56 +/- 1.76 mg/l. In controls mean level of amylase was 58.13 +/- 15.96U/L, lipase 18 1.63 +/- 5 1.94 U/L, calprotectin 0.49 +/- 0.17UL and ghrelin 2.59 +/- 0.19 mg/1. A statistical significant increase was reported [p<0.001] in levels of amylase, lipase and calprotectin between the two groups without significant in ghrelin level

RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate the effect of adding different combinations of thiamine [5, 10, and 20 mg/l] and biotein [0, 1 and 2 mg/l] to culture medium on maturation of somatic embryos. Furthermore, the effect of MS-salt strength [[1/4], [1/2], [3/4] and full strength] on maturation of embryos was investigated. Embryonic calli were obtained from shoot tips and primordial leaves of three dry date palm cultivars [Bartamoda, Sakkoty and Malkaby]. Among the different treatments, a high frequency of mature embryos was proliferate from embryonic calli when cultured on [3/4] MS + 10 mg/l 2, 4-D + 3 mg/l 2iP + 10 mg/l thiamine HCL + 1mg/l biotein. This treatment gave 85.7%, 92.5% and 95.7% embryos with embryonic callus derived from shoot tip of Bartamoda, Malkaby and Sakkoty cultivars, respectively. However it was 58.7, 67.3 and 74.6 with those derived from primordial leaf explants of the three cultivars, respectively. Then, the obtained embryos of the three cultivars were successfully developed to shoots when recultured onto hormone free of [3/4] MS- salt medium

RESUMO

A total of 100 extracted incisors, canines and premolars were collected forthis study. The gender and age of the patient, as well as the cause ofextraction, were recorded. Only sound teeth were included in the study. Teeth were stored in 4% buffered formaldehyde solution. Using long coneparalleling technique with XCP film holder to facilitate standardization, eachtooth was embedded in wax and placed parallel to the film and perpendicular tothe X-ray beam. Measurements on dental radiography [to the nearestmillimeter] were done using a stereoscope with a measuring eyepiece [graduatedlens] and included pulp and root lengths and widths. Results showed thatratios presenting the size of the pulp cavity were negatively correlated withage, confirming the inverse relationship. It was also shown that sex madesignificant contribution in the regression formula [when using all variablesand when using densitometric measurements done] resulting in strongercorrelation with age [r 0.74 - 0.91, p <0.01 and 0.0001]. Yet, if sex was notknown still estimates of age based on dentition are more likely to be correctthan those based on osseous development

RESUMO

Sixty boys [30 delinquents and 30 control] were studied. All subjects underwent the following tests: Eysenck personality inventory to evaluate neuroticism [N] and extraversion [E], Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory to evaluate psychopathic deviation [PD], modification of draw a person test [DAP] to measure IQ, h and test to measure degree of aggression, acting out and violence, and dermatoglyphics of fingers of both h and s. Results showed that the 3 personality dimensions tested were significantly higher in juvenile delinquents than in the control group. Similarly, a significant difference existed for aggression and acting out at p <0.01 IQ was significantly lower among juvenile delinquents than among the control group [t = 3.77, p = 0.01]. As for the dermatoglyphics, radial loops were nearly absent in both h and s of juvenile delinquents. The only significant relationship elicited was in the right index for the drug abuse offense
