RESUMO

The present study was undertaken to evaluate some molecular pathologic parameters as prognostic factors in low-grade superficial urinary bladder carcinoma. Twenty cases of low-grade [G1/G2] and superficial [T1] transitional cell carcinoma were included in this study with a follow up period of 30 months. A recurrence was noticed in 14 cases, while 6 cases showed no recurrences. Among the recurrent tumors, six patients developed subsequent muscle invasion and subjected to radical cystectomy. A total of 71 paraffin blocks were available for the study from the initial as well as the recurrences. They were submitted to microvessel count, using factor VIII related antigen, p53 expression, PCNA immunoreactivity and DNA ploidy, using CAS 200-image cytometer

RESUMO

The effect of zinc sulfate [ZnSO4], ascorbic acid [AsA] and sodium butarate [NaBt] were studied on the viability of Ehrlich ascites carcinoma [EAC] cells in vitro. Their antitumor effect was also studied in vivo. Eighty female Swiss albino mice were inoculated intraperitoneally with 2.5 x 106 EAC cells and injected with either 12.5 mg ZnSO4/kg body weight, 100 mg AsA/kg body weight or 100 mg NaBt/kg body weight. These compounds were injected either alone or in combinations of two or the three of them. The injection started after 24 hours for EAC inoculation and lasted for 2 days. The mean survival time [MST] as well as the change in body weights of mice of each group were determined. Another 160 female Swiss albino mice were inoculated with 2.5 x 106 EAC cells and divided into 8 groups, treated with one, two or three of the compounds under investigation, as mentioned before, and another group of 20 mice was left without any treatment serving as healthy control. Livers of mice were subjected to both biochemical and histopathological investigations

RESUMO

In an attempt to evaluate the role of bilharziasis in the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer, the specific molecular changes associated with specific morphologic changes in colorectal bilharzial lesions, precancerous lesions as well as selected cases of cancer were studied. A total of 36 tissue samples were selected and carefully investigated in this study. They included 20 cases of non-cancerous colonic bilharziasis [5 bilharzial colitis, 5 bilharzial granuloma and 10 bilharzial polyps], 3 cases of ulcerative colitis, 3 cases of juvenile polyps and 10 cases of colorectal adenocarcinoma [8 with bilharziasis and 2 without bilharziasis]. p53 and GO-Schiff reaction were done on these cases. It was found that cancer cases expressed both p53 and Gal-GalNAc markers. Moreover, involved mucosa remote from the tumor revealed Gal-GalNAc staining. All bilharzial cases, as well as juvenile polyps, from non-cancerous patients showed no positivity for both markers. However, one case of ulcerative colitis associated with moderate dysplasia exhibited p53 as well as Gal-GalNAC expression
