RESUMO

To evaluate the predictive accuracy of SRKT formula in biometry. Two hundred eyes which underwent cataract extraction by phacoemulsification and implantation of a posterior-chamber intraocular lens were included in the study. Depending upon the axial length the patients were divided in four groups. Group-l: Axial length<22 mm, n=28 eyes [14%].Group-2: Axial Length 22.00-24.5 mm, n=136 [68%]. Group-3: Axial Length 24.6-26 mm, n=25 eyes [12.5%]. Group-4: Axial Length > 26 mm, n=11 eyes [5.5%]. In all patients SRKT formula was used to calculate the power of intraocular lens. Group-I: The mean deviation in refraction was 0.42D with SRKT and 0.56D with RCOphth guidelines. Group-2: The mean deviation in refraction was 0.62D with SRKT and 0.59D with RCO guidelines. Group-3: The mean deviation in refraction was 0.43D with SRKT and 0.41D with RCOphth guidelines. Group-4: The mean deviation in refraction was 0.42D with SRKT [RCOphth recommends the same formula for this length of eye ball]. When the overall mean deviation [of all four groups] was calculated, it was 0.56D for SRKT [range 0 to 2.81D] and was 0.52 D if RCOphth guidelines had been followed. Postoperative BCVA of 6/12 or better was achieved in 197 eyes [98%]. SRKT formula performed credibly in average-length eyes as well as in the long eyes. For short eyes results would have been better if Hoffer Q formula had been used

RESUMO

The ability or inability to taste the bitterness of phenylthiocarbamide [PTC] is a classic inherited trait that has been studied in relation to various diseases. This study was carried out to find out any possible association between PTC-taste sensitivity and goitre. A total number of 471 subjects were studied. Among them 224 subjects were normal, healthy adults, taken as control and 247 were patients of goitre coming to Nishtar Hospital Multan for treatment. A 0.5% solution of PTC was freshly prepared. A drop of PTC Wution was placed on the dorsum of the tongue and the person was asked to state the taste perceived. Person was asked to spit out the chemical and rinse the mouth with water afterwards. Patients of goitre were clinically diagnosed by inspection and palpation method out of 224 normal healthy adults, 18.3% were non-tasters to PTC. Among 247 patients of goitre 36.84% were non-tasters to PTC. Number of non-tasters was highly significantly [P0 < 001] increased in the goitre patients as compared with the normal subjects. Percentage of non-tasters was non-significantly increased among male patients of goitre as compared with the normal subjects. Among female population, 10.88% of normal healthy females were non-taster to PTC and 37.37% of females having goitres were found to be non-tasters to PTC. Difference was highly significant [P0 < .001]. Female non-tasters to PTC are more prone to develop goitre as compared with the normal healthy females. PTC non-taster status is a vulnerability marker for females

RESUMO

To see how students admitted after entry test in Nishtar Medical College, Multan, perform in First Professional MBBS Part-I, we analyzed the results of three successive sessions i.e. N-51, N-52 and N-53. A total number of 437 students' results were analyzed. We grouped the students into top 50 of F.Sc [F.Sc-50], top 50 of Entry Test [ET-50] and top 50 of MBBS Part-I results [MBBS-50]. When we analyzed the MBBS-50 group, it was seen that in N-51 [Session 2002-2003], twenty one of MBBS-50 students were from F.Sc-50 group, twenty of MBBS-50 were from ET-50 group. In N-52 [Session 2003-2004], seventeen of MBBS-50 were from F.Sc-50 group. eighteen of MBBS-50 were from ET-50 group. In N-53 [session 2004-2005], twenty eight of MBBS-50 students were from F.Sc-50 group; eleven of MBBS-50 students were from ET-50 group. So in three successive MBBS batches [i.e. N-51, N-52 and N-53 batches], F.Sc-50 group contributed more as compared with the ET-50 group. Less number of students failed from F.Sc-50 group as compared with ET-50 group. F.Sc-50 group also have more high achievers as compared with ET-50 group. F.Sc-50 group showed improvements in its performance over the three years period. We conclude that F.Sc results are reflecting more precisely the students' performance in future as compared with the entry test results
