RESUMO

Histiocytic sarcoma is a rare malignant neoplasm that demonstrates mature histiocytic traits as characterized by immunohistochemistry. We report a case of extranodal histiocytic sarcoma (ENHS) of colon in a 56-year-old man presenting with gastrointestinal symptoms. Radiological findings were indicative of lymphoma or diffuse metastatic disease in colon. Histopathology of colectomy specimen was suggestive of ENHS, and immunohistochemical studies confirmed the uncommon diagnosis. The patient refused further therapy and succumbed to systemic complications of metastatic disease within a month of diagnosis. There have only been seven previous reports in world literature of ENHS involving large intestine.

RESUMO

CONTEXT: As of today, there is no validated standard method to assess clinical response of breast cancer to neo- adjuvant chemotherapy (NACT). Some centers use clinical dimensions while others use radiological measurements to evaluate response according to RECIST criteria. AIMS: The aim was to correlate and compare the clinical, radiological, and pathological parameters for assessing the tumor response in patients of breast cancer receiving NACT. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Single institution, prospective nonrandomized study conducted over a 2-year period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with diagnosed breast cancer were assessed for response to NACT prior to surgery using clinical and radiological techniques. This was correlated with pathological reponse which was assessed by measuring gross dimensions and Miller-Payne grading of response to chemotherapy. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: Spearman’s rho nonparametric. RESULTS: Fifty two patients completed the evaluation (out of 313 cases of ca breast treated during the same period) with a median age of 52.5 years. We noted a 26.9% clinical complete response (CR) and 19.2% had pathological CR. Clinical evaluation had a sensitivity and specificity of 73.5% and 88.5% respectively compared to 14.2% and 100% respectively for radiological assessment. CONCLUSIONS: Clinical assessment of response to NACT shows a higher sensitivity compared to radiological assessment. However the overall low sensitivity and specificity rates of clinical assessment mandate a search for a better method of evaluation.

RESUMO

Success for maximum isolation of anaerobes depends on maintaining critically low oxygen levels throughout and growth in a reduced medium with exclusion of inhibitory substances. Hence a dual system was used equipped with candle combustion for instant exhaustion of major part of oxygen from a sealed jar, along with acidified steel wool for residual oxygen purging. For inhibitory substances removal, test anaerobes were grown on anaerobic medium layered on buffer charcoal agar bed. After 48 hours incubation average colony sizes were compared with that of growths in conventional Gas-Pak system. Better growths were noted in the innovative system.

RESUMO

Treatment of delayed union, malunion, and nonunion is a challenge to the orthopaedic surgeons in veterinary and human fields. Apart from restoration of alignment and stable fixation, in many cases adjunctive measures such as bone-grafting or use of bone-graft substitutes are of paramount importance. Bone-graft materials usually have one or more components: an osteoconductive matrix, which acts as scaffold to new bone growth; osteoinductive proteins, which support mitogenesis of undifferentiated cells; and osteogenic cells, which are capable of forming bone in the appropriate environment. Autologous bone remains the “gold standard” for stimulating bone repair and regeneration, but its availability may be limited and the procedure to harvest the material is associated with complications. Bone-graft substitutes can either substitute autologous bone graft or expand an existing amount of autologous bone graft. We review the currently available bone graft and graft substitutes for the novel therapeutic approaches in clinical setting of orthopaedic surgery.

RESUMO

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer- related death in the world today. Since the effective management of drug resistant lung cancer, and particularly non-small cell lung carcinomas is a major problem, attempts need to be made to identify new potential anticancer drugs that can kill non-small cell lung cancer cells efficiently. In the present study, a human non-small cell lung carcinoma NCI-H460 cell line was used to evaluate the antiproliferative activity of Fluoroquinolones like Enoxacin, Norfloxacin, Ciprofloxacin and Levofloxacin. As determined by Sulphorodhamine B assay (SRB assay), all Fluoroquinolones caused cellular growth inhibition in a concentration and time-dependent manner. Enoxacin was found to be the most effective Fluoroquinolone followed by Norfloxacin, Ciprofloxacin and Levofloxacin. Growth inhibitory effects were also found to be independent of the concentrations of serum growth factors in culture medium or variation of initial cell seeding density and proved to be irreversible in nature. Appearance of rounded cells with altered morphology and cell surface blebbing indicated cell killing by apoptosis. Cell shrinkage, nuclear condensation & fragmentation, and cytoplasmic blebbing as indicated by MGG staining confirmed this to be the case. Thus, this investigation clearly demonstrated that the NCI-H460 human non-small cell lung carcinoma cell line is highly sensitive to Fluoroquinolone treatment. The Fluoroquinolones used in this study which are clinically used as antibacterial agents, can also inhibit tumor cell growth suggesting their potential use in a strategy for cancer treatment which might help in controlling cancer.

RESUMO

A 39-year-old male presented with a mass arising from the nasal columella for last 8 months. The mass was lobulated, dark red in colour, firm in consistency and approximately 3 cm in diameter. It was attached to the columella of the nose by a narrow stalk. The mass was excised completely under general anaesthesia and histopathological examination suggested it to be a case of capillary haemangioma.

RESUMO

A 17-year-old unmarried girl was admitted with the complaints of breathlessness on exertion, swelling of upper and lower limbs and intermittent fever for last 21 days. Past history revealed bluish discolouration of nails and tongue since birth along with recurrent dyspnoea. After thorough general and cardiovascular examination, a provisional diagnosis of tetralogy of Fallot was made. Chest x-ray revealed cardiomegaly and absent main pulmonary artery segment. ECG revealed gross right axis deviation and right ventricular hypertrophy. Echocardiogram showed features of double outlet right ventricle.

RESUMO

Trichoderma pseudokoningii MTCC 3011 is a very useful strain for biological control of the plant pathogen Sclerotium rolfsii under post-harvest conditions. In the present investigation, several benomyl-tolerant phenotypic mutants of this strain have been generated using a two step mutagenesis-chemical followed by gamma irradiation. The mutants differed from the wild type strain in antibiotic and disease control potential. Some of the mutants are superior to the wild type in biocontrol potential on S. rolfsii.

RESUMO

Two groups comprising 25 patients in each went for caesarean section delivery under epidural anaesthesia. Group I patients received 50 mg (1 ml) of tramadol hydrochloride with 14 ml of 2% lignocaine with adrenaline (1:200,000) and group II cases received 15 ml of 2% lignocaine with adrenaline (1:200,000). Both the groups of patients were comparable in age and body weight. In both the groups, there were good operative conditions, insignificant changes in pulse and blood pressure. The neonatal status was also similar in both the groups. The patients belonging to group I showed longer duration (15.39 +/- 0.45 hours) of analgesia in comparison to group II patients (2.46 +/- 0.54 hours).

RESUMO

Antipyretic activity of methanolic extract of rhizome of N. nucifera was studied on normal body temperature and yeast induced pyrexia in rats. Yeast suspension (10 ml/kg, s.c.) increased rectal temperature after 19 hr of administration. The extract, in doses of 200, 300 or 400 mg/kg (po) produced significant dose dependent lowering of normal body temperature and yeast provoked elevation of body temperature in rats. The effect produced was comparable with the standard antipyretic drug, paracetamol (150 mg/kg, i.p.).

RESUMO

Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is now an established procedure for the evaluation of breast masses in women. But there are only occasional reports of aspiration cytology of rare malignant neoplasms of male breast. During the past 8 years the authors detected 12 malignant neoplasms of male breast by FNAC out of total 167 cases of aspirates of male breast lesions. There were eight infiltrating ductal carcinomas, two leiomyosarcomas and two metestatic carcinomas. The cytologic features with short review of literature of male breast carcinomas are presented. Due to high diagnostic accuracy, FNAC should be routinely practiced as a quick and safe diagnostic procedure in all outpatients department.

RESUMO

Activity of adenosine deaminase (ADA) in serum and peritoneal fluid was studied prospectively in 24 aetiologically proved cases of ascites and 10 age-matched controls. Patients were divided into 3 groups according to causes of ascites, viz. malignant ascites (11), tubercular peritonitis (7) and cirrhosis of liver (6). Serum ADA values and peritoneal: serum ADA ratio did not show any consistent pattern in any group. But in patients with tubercular peritonitis ADA activity in ascitic fluid was significantly higher (P < .001) than in the other groups. An ascitic ADA level of 30 units/L had a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 94.1% for tubercular peritonitis. These findings suggest that the ascitic fluid ADA activity is useful for the diagnosis of tubercular peritonitis; this method is simple and least invasive.

RESUMO

The mechanism of Agrobacterium mediated genetic transformation of plants is dependent upon certain genetic function of the chromosome of the bacterium as well as on Ti-plasmid borne vir loci and the border sequences of T-DNA. The organisationally variable forms of the naturally occurring border sequences amongst Ti-plasmid types are differentially responsive to gene products of vir loci concerned with T-strand production. Additionally, the production of stable transformants is dependent upon vir gene products effective after T strands are produced. The interaction of border sequences from different strains of Agrobacterium with vir proteins encoded by various helper plasmids revealed that functional differences do exist amongst vir gene products contained in the type of helper plasmids used.
