RESUMO

The objective of this research was to scrutinize the impact of three resistance-training programs on absolute andreciprocal durability and muscular strength. Forty-three male subjects were assigned to three groups: highresistance-low repetition group (HRLRG, n=15) performed 3 sets of 6-8 RM (repetition maximum) each session, the medium resistance-medium repetition group (MRMRG, n= 16) performed 2 sets of 30-40 RM per session andthe low resistance-high repetition group (LRHRG, n= 12) worked out a set of 100-150 RM per session. Thetraining for the participants was bench press thrice a week for nine weeks. The data revealed an improvement of20% in maximal strength of the HRLRG and this was greater than 8% and 5 % improvements recorded forMRMRG and LRHRG, respectively. Regarding the absolute endurance, the trends however were reversed asLRHRG registered gains of 41%, MRMRG improved by 39% and HRLRG gained only 28%. The results forrelative endurance assessment reported that HRLRG’s accomplishments essentially was declined by 7 % aftertraining and was considerably inferior to the 22 % and 28 % improvements achieved by other two groups. It wasestablished that skeletal muscles make general and specific modifications to a training stimulus and the stabilityof these adaptations is primarily reliant upon the intensity and duration of the training protocol.

RESUMO

Preoperative templating plays an important role in orthopaedic surgery for achieving a successful outcome in THA. This includes not only selecting the type and size of implant, but also deciding on the alignment, position, and orientation of these implants, relying on anatomically defined landmarks. The first goal of this study was to evaluate the validity of preoperative templating technique in terms of determining the final implant size and position. The second goal was to investigate the interobserver and Intraobserver reliability of template readings on conventional radiographs. In Aljumhorei hospital, Mosul city a case series; pilot study has been carried for twenty-eight patients had preoperative templating for total hip arthroplasty between 21/10/2009 to 16/5/2012 was carried by the operating surgeon. Preoperative templating by same two orthopedic surgeons carried for 12 patients from the total. Preoperative templating for Seventeen patientsout of the total were studied with the same operating surgeon after 2 years of experiences. 29% compatibility for shell between preoperative templating with intraoperative for the operator, P_ 0.023. While for stem 39%P_ 0.257. Second surgeon 58% compatibility with P_0.564, Stem differences represent 33% [P_ 0.248]. Differences with two years experiences for the operating surgeon indicate 35% compatibility both for shell and the stem with non-significant differences. Preoperative templating appeared to be more accurate for femoral stem measurements than the acetabular templating in determining the accurate sizes. Two years experienced added no more in templating measurements. There were significant differences for interobserver measurements.

RESUMO

Plasmacytoma is a rare B- lymphocyte neoplastic disorder that usually presents as the generalized disease multiple myeloma. Less than 5% of cases present as a solitary mass of monoclonal plasma cells in the bone or soft tissue. Although solitary osseous Plasmacytoma may arise in any bone, while Sternal involvement is uncommon. We report here a case of solitary plasmacytoma of sternum in a 55 years old male patient without signs and symptoms suggestive of multiple myeloma. Patient was treated with radiation therapy with a dosage of 40 Gy in 20 fractions

RESUMO

The present study aims to assess the presence and severity of depressive symptoms in persons suffering from schizophrenia as compared to normal healthy controls. This case control comparative study was carried out at the Department of Psychiatry, Postgraduate Medical Institute, Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar from January to December 2005. One twenty subjects were included in the study by non probability convenient sampling. Group 1 [the study group] included sixty patients suffering from schizophrenia between the ages of 15-60 and Group 2 [the control group] included sixty normal subjects without any major psychiatric disorder proportionally matched for age and gender. Those suffering from schizoaffective illness, major depression and organic brain damage were excluded. Hamilton Depression Rating Scale [HDRS], a 21 item scale was used to assess the presence and severity of depressive symptoms. The spectrum of depressive symptoms was broad in the schizophrenic sample. The difference in two groups was observed specially in depressed mood i.e., 19 patients in the study vs. 3 subjects in the control group with a p value of 0.0001 and in psychomotor retardation i.e., 19 patients in the study vs. 4 subjects in the control group, again with a p value of 0.0001. The results of this study suggest that depressive symptoms are a part and parcel of schizophrenia and every patient suffering from schizophrenia should be assessed in detail for the presence and severity of depressive symptoms

RESUMO

1056 patients underwent gastroscopic examination from April 1992 to November 1997, with male to female ratio of 1.2:1. The average age was 40.2 years. 77% of them were either admitted patients or came from our own OPD whereas some other doctors [Open Access Gastroscopy] referred 23%. The common reasons for the procedure were pain epigastrium [44.6%] dyspepsia [26.7%], dysphagia [7%], haematemesis [4.8%], vomiting [4.2%], bleeding per rectum/malena [4.4%] and anaemia [2.5%]. In 39% of the patients no abnormality was detected. The other common findings were oesophago-gastritis [14%], mild gastritis [13.5%], duodenitis [6.5%] and oesophagitis [5.9%]. The incidence of peptic ulcer was only 6.7% and that of gastric malignancy was 4%. We did not encounter any major complication. Only one patient had cardiac arrest, which was successfully resuscitated

RESUMO

To assess the various risk factors and prognosis of ultrasound guided aspiration of liver abscesses. Design: Study of 200 cases admitted in Surgical Unit-Ill and Medical wards of Liaquat Medical College Hospital over a period of five years [Jan. 1991-Dec. 1995]. Surgical Unit-Ill and Medical wards-I-II-III-IV of Liaquat Medical College Jamshoro, Hyderabad. 200 patients diagnosed to have liver abscesses during a period of five years and admitted in surgical unit-III and Medical wards of Liaquat Medical College Jamshoro. Needle was successfully inserted in all 200 cases in first attempt. No preparation was required in 191 patients, while the remaining 9 patients were children below seven years of age, therefore the procedure was carried out after sedation. In majority of patients the entire pus was aspirated from the cavity in single aspiration, while few needed 2nd or 3rd aspiration. All abscess in this study were cured without open surgery. The use of ultrasound guided aspiration is much easier, economical and causes much less distress to the patients as compared to surgical removal. Moreover side effects of open surgery and anaesthesia are avoided

RESUMO

To evaluate awareness of hospital residence about the use of metered dose inhaler. Design: A comparative study of pulmonary and non-pulmonary physicians through demonstration of MDI use, observed by a single investigator. Settings: Four teaching hospitals in Lahore. Subjects: Eighty residents including 8 senior registrars, with minimal hospital experience of one year. 96.3% of all participants have been prescribing inhalers, while 93.8% were actually demonstrating its use to their patients. Majority of the physicians [43.8%] learnt the technique of MDI use from their senior colleagues [95% CL: 32.9%-54.7%] where as 36.3% [95% CL: 25.8%-46.8%] had leant it from more than one source. The most frequent error included, making more than one actuation at a actuation at a time [83.8%] and not giving a gap before next actuation [72.5%]. Breath holding was advised by 49.46%, slow inhalation by 48.1%, shaking of inhaler by 31.3%, approximation of lips by only 28.8% of the doctors. At least 6 out of 10 steps were correctly performed by 25 [31%] participant which included 37.5% of the pulmonary and 23.8% of the non pulmonary group. This difference is however not statistically significant at 5% level [X2 = 8.82, P = NS] Overall knowledge about the use of basic inhalational device [MDI] among pulmonary and non-pulmonary residents from teaching hospitals is same but very poor
