RESUMO

Experiences of hypotensive treatment with labetalol in 30 Burmese patients are described. A third of the patients were in cardiac failure at the time of presentation and a third of the patient had C.V.A. Labetalol was shown to possess a low incidence of side effects and apparently free from tolerance and is an effective and generally well tolerated anti hypertensive agent in moderate hypertension.

RESUMO

A trial of exchange blood transfusion for acute fulminant hepatic failure for reported. 17 patients received conservative measures only and 17 patients received exchange blood trasfusion. The majority of the patients were young adults and the clinical states, associated conditions, and biochemical levels were comparable, 14 patients (82.35 per cent) regained consciousness and 12 patients (70.59 per cent) survived in the exchange group where as none survived in the non-exchange group.

RESUMO

Peak expiratory flow rates of 167 subjects (87 males and 80 females) have been studied at North Okkalapa General Hospital. The age height body weight and body surface area were recorder. Correlations between Peak expiratory flow rates and physical characteristics have been made and the findings compared with those of other workers.

RESUMO

In a double blind trial, involving 41 ambulant patients with duodenal ulcer, the effect of three different doses (8 and 4 tablets daily) of deglycyrrhizinated liquorice (Caved. (S)) were compared with those of a placebo group. The results were assessed bv endoscopic findings. All the doses tested caused a significant healing effect without side effects. No difference could be demonstrated between the two highest doses, whereas both gave significantly better results than the lowest dose. Gastric acid secretion was reduced by the highest dose.

RESUMO

Beclomethasone dipropionate (Aldecin) 2 x 50ug x 4 times/day given by inhalation was compared with control involving forty patients (20 study patients and 20 control patients) with chronic bronchial asthma. The period of study for each patient being 8 weeks. Improvement was assessed by diary score cards with its criteria, daily peak flow rates and other pulmonary function tests. Significant improvement was seen by each of these criteria. Although improvement was obvious during the first month of Beclomethasone dipropionate therapy in (he majority of studied patients, a more definite benefit was seen during the second month in terms of symptom scores and daily peak flow rate and FEV 1studies. There was no evidence of any deleterious effects from the drug: There results indicate that Becfomethasone dipropionate (Aldecin) given by inhalation in a dose of 400ug per day promises to be an effective treatment in patients with Bronchial Asthma).

RESUMO

This clinical trial with combination of Chloroquine and Tetracycline therapy on vivax malaria on twenty patients has shown that it is very effective for radical cure therapy. It is to be recommended in place of chloroquine-primaquine combination, which is more costly and not available at times.

RESUMO

Twelve asthmatic patients were selected for this trial. Clinical al1d spirometric lung function assessments were carried out weekly before, during and after (4) weeks of Beclomethasone therapy. Symptom diary score charts were provided to the patients and were ins ructed to note their symptoms and bronchodilator usage daily. In 55.5 percent of patients there were statistically significant Improvements in pulmonary function para-meters which were accompanied by clinical improvement in 66 percent of patients during Beclomethasone therapy. There were reduction ill bronchodilator requirements together with reduction in diary scores in 66 percent of patients. None required systemic steroids during Beclomethasone therapy. 87 percent of patients claimed benefit except one in whom there was no remarkable improvement in clinical as well as in spirometric lung function assessments No side effects attributable to Beclomethasone dipropionate therapy were noted. Beclomethasone dipropionate aerosol is valuable in the treatment of asthma especially in those becoming worse and who are no longer responding adequately to bronchodilators, because of its topical potency and lack of systemic side effects and so enabling us to avoid the use of. systemic steroid therapy.

RESUMO

The functional and structural changes in the liver in the 21 patients with acute attack of falciparum malaria were studied in the medical units of the DSGH. A notable but not highly significant relationship was found between the changes. A diagnostic criteria for the recognition of the entity "Malaria Hepatitis" is proposed.
