RESUMO

Background: Preterm babies' survival has improved with advances in neonatology care in this era. Even with advances in treatments, there is still morbidity and mortality among preterm. The objective of this study was to know the incidence of prematurity and complications seen in them. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted on all preterm babies born in Sapthagiri Institute of Medical Sciences, Bangalore, over period of one year from 1st August 2017 to July 2018.Results: Out of 500 babies born, 110 babies had RDS, among 110 babies 85 cases were preterm RDS babies included in study. Majority were males 55 (64.5%) and females 30 (35.2%). The gestational age group was maximum in the 28-32weeks,the most common morbidity noted was sepsis (77.7%) and RDS (22%). Death was 9(10.5%) only 4(4.7%) needed intervention in the form of CPAP.Conclusions: The study concluded that males were commonly affected by respiratory distress syndrome, sepsis was a common cause for morbidity and mortality. Inspite of advances in neonatology sepsis continues to be a leading cause of death. Proper hand cleansing has to be emphasized and reinforced to prevent sepsis in NICU. The best possible attempts to delay preterm delivery have to be followed. One should have a high index of suspicion and low threshold to treat sepsis in preterm.

RESUMO

Endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) addresses the obstruction of lacrimal secretion at the level of lacrimal sac and nasolacrimal duct. It facilitates direct drainage of lacrimal fluid into nose eliminating pooling of tears in lacrimal sac. Endoscopic approach has its many advantages compared to external DCR. This study was done in a tertiary teaching hospital where 210 patient underwent endoscopic DCR, were reviewed for results and complications. The advantages with endonasal DCR were established with few complications and recurrence rate of 8% at the end of one year follow up.

RESUMO

Multislice CT is currently the imaging modality of choice for evaluating PNS & adjacent structures. Such a method has been increasingly utilized in the assessment of anatomical variations, allowing their accurate identification with high anatomical details. Some anatomical variations may predispose to sinonasal disease, constituting areas of high risk for injuries & complications during surgical procedures. Therefore, the recognition of such variations is critical in the preoperative evaluation for endoscopic surgery.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To asses the prevailing breastfeeding and infant feeding practices in rural areas. DESIGN: Stratified sampling method in a community based study. SUBJECTS: 1050 infants from 0-24 months of age. RESULTS: The timely first suckling rate was 0.3%. All the infants received prelacteal feeds. Colostrum was rejected by 29% of mothers. Delayed initiation of breastfeeding was common; 35% of babies were not breast-fed even at 48 h of birth. Exclusive breastfeeding was noted in 94% at 1 mo, 83.5% at 2 mo, 72.5% at 3 mo, 61.2% at 4 mo, 43.4% at 5 mo and 26.8% at 6 mo age. Timely complementary feeding rate was 57.3% among infants from 6 to 10 mo age. Continued breastfeeding rate was 99.7% at 1 year and 87.2% at 2 years. The bottle feeding rate was 49.4% among infants below 1 year age. The ever breast-fed rate was 97.0% and the median duration of breastfeeding was beyond 24 months. CONCLUSIONS: Bottle feeding is quite prevalent even in rural areas and the infant feeding practices are far from satisfactory.

RESUMO

While investigating a chest opacity in Behcet's disease possibility of pulmonary aneurysm should be considered. Contrast enhanced CT is a safe diagnostic method which is useful in confirming or excluding the presence of an aneurysm in such cases. We report here the first case of bilateral pulmonary aneurysms in Behcet's disease.
