RESUMO

Background@#Dry sauna treatments improve the quality of life for chronic pain, congestive heart failure, and type 2 diabetes patients. This study aimed to determine whether dry sauna therapy improved the quality of life of obese people. @*Methods@#A total of 38 consecutive participants aged over 20 years with a body mass index of ≥25 kg/m2 were recruited for the study. The participants were treated with a 90°C dry sauna for 15 minutes, twice daily for 4 consecutive days. To assess the quality of life, all participants completed the 5 level EQ-5D questionnaires and the EQ-Visual Analog Scale. Study parameters were measured on the same day prior to commencing the sauna sessions in a fasted state and 2 days after the last sauna session. @*Results@#The average age was 62.3±9.5 years; 84.2% of the participants were female. The mean body mass index was 28.5±2.4 kg/m2. Dry sauna significantly improved the mean 5 level EQ-5D index scores from 0.83±0.12 to 0.89±0.11 and increased the mean EQ-Visual Analog Scale from 79.0±15.2 to 91.1±9.7. However, there were no significant changes in body mass index, blood pressure, heart rate, or body composition before and after the 8-session sauna therapy. @*Conclusion@#Dry sauna improved the health-related quality of life of obese patients without adverse events. Further clinical studies in larger study populations are needed to verify these findings and provide concrete evidence for obesity treatment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Dry sauna has been very popular as an alternative therapy for promoting health among people who want to improve their health condition without relying on pharmaceuticals. The aim of this study was to investigate whether dry sauna therapy improved quality of life and reduced pain in participants with low back pain.METHODS: Study participants comprised a total of 37 consecutive patients who were over 20 years of age with low back pain. Dry sauna therapy was performed twice per day for 5 consecutive days over the course of 1 week, thus comprising a total of 10 sessions each of 15 min of exposure to a 90℃ dry sauna.RESULTS: The verbal numerical rating scale (VNRS) and Oswestry disability index (ODI) scores were significantly reduced after dry sauna therapy (P < 0.001 for both). VNRS pain scores had a median (range) of 5 (2–8) before dry sauna therapy and 3 (0–8) after dry sauna therapy. ODI scores had a median (range) of 12 (2–24) before dry sauna therapy and 8 (1–17) after dry sauna therapy. The proportion of participants who reported successful treatment (excellent + good) was 70%. No adverse effects were observed related to dry sauna therapy.CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that dry sauna therapy may be useful to improve quality of life and reduce pain in patients with low back pain. Therefore, pain physicians can recommend dry sauna therapy as an alternative and complimentary therapy for patients with low back pain.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Blepharoptosis can result from either congenital or acquired causes. Blow out fracture or facial bone fracture including blow out fracture can be one of the causes. Authors experienced 3 cases of severe blepharoptosis after blow out fracture treated only with observation after reduction of associated fracture. METHODS: Reconstruction of orbital wall was conducted on all cases diagnosed as blow out fracture using 3 dimensional computed tomography, and conservative treatment was done on accompanying severe blepharoptosis. RESULTS: At the time of injury, all cases showed severe blepharoptosis requiring frontalis muscle transfer for correction. But blepharoptosis was recovered in an average of 18 weeks without any surgical procedure except reconstruction of orbital wall. CONCLUSION: Once Blepharoptosis occurred after blow out fracture, thorough evaluation must be done at first. If definitive cause of blepahroptisis cannot be found as authors' cases, injury of oculomotor nerve may result in blepharoptosis. So, as for blepharoptosis after blow out fracture, conservative treatment following reconstruction of fractured orbital wall can be one of good management.

RESUMO

Posttraumatic pseudoaneurysm of the superficial temporal artery is very rare and occurs secondary to trauma. Clinical diagnosis is based on past history of trauma and physical examination and can be confirmed by duplex ultrasonogram, digital subtraction angiography, CT and MRI. Ligation of proximal and distal ends of the superficial temporal artery and excision of the pseudoaneurysm has been the standard treatment. Compressive therapy, endovascular coil embolization, percutaneous thrombin injection under ultrasound guidance have been reported as alternative treatment methods. When surgical excision of the superficial temporal artery pseudoaneurysm is performed, surgeon must be concerned about the anatomical relation between superficial temporal artery and temporal branches of the facial nerve. In this article, we report a rare case of superficial temporal artery pseudoaneurysm with some review of the literatures about anatomical relation between superficial temporal artery and temporal branches of facial nerve.

RESUMO

In 1974, Casson et. al. reported midfacial degloving approach to repair the midfacial bone fracture. After then, this approach has been used frequently to treat the lesions on nasal cavity, nasopharynx, facial plastic surgery and midfacial trauma. Midfacial degloving approach consists of 1) bilateral sublabial incision 2) complete transfixion incision/ septocolumellar incision 3) bilateral intercartilaginous incision 4) bilateral pyriform aperature incision. This approach provides proper access for midfacial bone structure without facial scar but has post-operative complications such as transient epistaxis, infraorbital nerve paresthesia and nasal crust. We treated three patients using midfacial degloving approach to correct traumatic deformity in midface area. In two patients, rhinoplasty with autogenous rib graft was done simultaneously. So we report these cases with review of literatures.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Primary nodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (MZBL) is recently divided into mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) type and splenic type. Herein, we analyzed clinicopathologic differences of those two types of nodal MZBL. METHODS: Histologic and clinical findings of eleven cases of primary nodal MZBL lymphoma were reviewed. Immunohistochemical stains for IgD, Ki-67, CD3, and CD20 were performed. RESULTS: The cases were classified as splenic type in four, MALT type in five, and unclassified in two. The age at presentation was 36.7 years old (range: 16-73) in splenic type and 48 years old (range: 31-68) in MALT type. Two patients with splenic type and one with MALT type had a long history of lymphadenopathy up to 9 years. Whereas tumors of splenic type showed nodular infiltration of tumor cells with follicular colonization and hyperplastic germinal center, tumors of MALT type showed mainly sinusoidal or parafollicular infiltration and atrophic germinal centers. All the patients with splenic type were alive at last follow-up and one patient with MALT type died of disease at 5 months after diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS:Although the number of cases we analyzed was small, splenic type seems to be distinct from MALT type and lower grade neoplasm.

RESUMO

Cancer of the stomach is responsible for approximately 650,000 deaths globally each year and is probably second only to lung cancer worldwide as an overall cause of cancer-related mortality. Similar to the situation with most adenocarcinomas of the gastointestinal tract, carcinomas of the stomach can spread by local extension to adjacent normal structures and can develop lymphatic, peritoneal, and distant metastases. The tumor cells, can also permeate diffusely into the lymphatic plexus of the bowel, more often at the level of the upper duodenum hut sometimes down into the distal ileum and the large bowel. We report a case of lymphatic metastasis of gastric adenocarcinoma to the ampulla of Vater with review of the literature.
