RESUMO

Purpose@#This study examined the relationships among serum ferritin, vitamin D, folate, iron, and vitamin B12 as indicators of obesity. The results provide the basic data for the prevention and treatment of obese and severely obese people. @*Methods@#This study selected 44 people from 18 years of age or older to 59 years. This study used the indicators of the body mass index (BMI) to analyze obesity as the obesity group (BMI of 25.0–29.9 kg/m2 ) and as the severe obesity group (BMI ≥ 30.0 kg/m2 ). Of the 44 subjects, 23 and 21 subjects were in the obesity and severe obesity groups, respectively. Their height, weight, body fat, skeletal muscle mass measured using bioimpedance analysis, and measured serum nutrients and biochemical parameters. @*Results@#The obesity group showed a significantly lower age, body weight, BMI and body composition, body fat mass, and body fat percentage, and the height was significantly lower in the severe obesity group. The results of the biochemical parameters of the subjects showed that the levels of aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase, hemoglobin A1c, total cholesterol, and triglyceride were within the normal range, and there was no significant difference between the 2 groups. The levels of folate, vitamin B12 , 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 , iron, and ferritin were almost normal, and there was no significant difference between the 2 groups. @*Conclusion@#This study revealed an association with the serum nutrients and obesity, but there was no difference between the obesity group and severe obesity group. Observations of the nutrient levels in not only the blood in obesity and severe obesity but also in red blood cells and tissues will be necessary.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of self-care adherence in the elderly with diabetes mellitus (DM) who have lived alone, and to investigate the association between health literacy, diabetic knowledge and self-care adherence. METHODS: Descriptive research using the cross-sectional approach was conducted. Data was collected by using a convenience sampling of 201 participants who aged sixty-five years old or more and have lived alone. Statistical analysis was conducted by using an independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffé test, Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression analysis. RESULTS: Mean scores of health literacy, diabetic knowledge and adherence of self-care were 4.41±3.54 points out of a possible 12, 6.22±2.55 points out of a possible 15, 58.56±17.28 points out of a possible 112, respectively. Adherence of self-care showed a statistical association with health literacy (r=.26, p<.001) and diabetic knowledge (r=.30, p<.001). Statistically significant factors in the regression model were monthly income, diabetic knowledge and exercise. CONCLUSION: The level of self-care adherence in the elderly with diabetes living alone was relatively low. Diabetic knowledge was an important factor to improve the level of self-care adherence for the elderly with diabetes living alone.

RESUMO

Objective To observe the effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) combined with abdominal muscle electrical stimulation on the pulmonary ventilation of patients with cervical spinal cord injury. Methods Twenty-five patients with cervical spinal cord injury were randomized into an experimental group (n =13) and a control group (n =12).The control group was given comprehensive rehabilitation treatment, including upper limb movements, standing training and training of respiratory function, while the experimental group was given repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and abdominal muscle electrical stimulation in addition to the comprehensive rehabilitation treatment. The patients' maximum lung capacity (VC),forced expiratory volume for 1 second (FEV1),peak expiratory flow rate (PEF) and tidal volume (VT) were measured at the outset and after 3 months of treatment. Results The lung function indexes increased in both groups after treatment, but each index improved significantly more in the experimental group,on average, than in the control group. Conclusion As a supplement to routine respiratory function training, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation combined with abdominal intermediate frequency electrical stimulation can improve the pulmonary ventilation function of patients with middle and lower cervical spinal cord injury.

RESUMO

The borderline tumor is not benign but has low malignant potential, which accounts for 10-15% of all ovarian tumors. The mucinous borderline tumors make up approximately 40% of all borderline tumors. About 5% of mature cystic teratomas of ovary include some with mucinous cystadenoma. The malignant transformation is occurred in about 1-3% of patients who have a mature cystic teratoma. There has been reported frequently about the malignant transformation of a mature cystic teratoma. After the first description of a patient with mucinous borderline tumor associated with a mature cystic teratoma in 1988, the borderline tumorous change of a mature cystic teratoma has been reported rarely. This report presents a patient with atypical proliferating mucinous tumor arising in a mature cystic teratoma.

RESUMO

In this paper, one method was introduced, which was a combination of the cue-related morphine addiction model and a technique for obtaining chronic extracellular recordings of single unit in freely moving rats. With the combination and improvement of this technique, we have successfully applied this new method to study the neuronal activity of the hippocampus CA1 region in morphine withdrawal rats. In all, we found some more accurate and objective cellular characteristics of hippocampal neurons, and considered these characteristics as one of electrophysiological indexes of morphine addiction rats.
