ABSTRACT Objective: The antisocial personality disorder (APD) is one theme of interest for psychiatry/mental health students and professionals. The access to psychopathology aspects by means of movies is able to improve the understanding about these disorders. This study aimed at evaluates the frequency of APD and of its diagnostic criteria in the Brazilian cinema for teaching purposes. Methods: The method consisted of survey sampling (for convenience, once the study is extracted from another greater project); use of a diagnostic instrument and analysis of the results. Results: 44.73% of the personalities were diagnosed with APD. All the diagnostic criteria for APD were present. The most frequent criterion was the practice of illegal acts. Impulsivity was associated with aggressiveness in 29.4% of the cases and with the use of psychoactive substances in almost 30% of the cases. 35.3% of the characters had a premature and violent death. Conclusion: The research enabled the identification of APD diagnostic criteria in the Brazilian cinema. Many scenes were able to represent the diagnosis clearly. The data proved to be sufficient in indicate the potentiality of the material as a didactic and pedagogical foundation.
RESUMO Objetivo: O transtorno de personalidade antissocial (TPA) é um tema de interesse para alunos e profissionais da psiquiatria/saúde mental. O acesso aos aspectos psicopatológicos por meio de filmes é capaz de melhorar a compreensão acerca dos transtornos. Este estudo buscou avaliar a frequência do TPA e de seus critérios diagnósticos no cinema brasileiro, para o ensino. Métodos: O método consistiu em levantamento da amostra (por conveniência, dado que o estudo é recorte de outro projeto maior); aplicação de instrumento e análise dos resultados. Resultados: Entre os personagens, 44,73% foram diagnosticados com TPA. Todos os critérios diagnósticos para TPA se fizeram presentes. O critério mais frequente foi a prática de atos ilegais. A impulsividade esteve associada à agressividade em 29,4% dos casos e ao uso de substâncias psicoativas em quase 30% dos casos. Entre os personagens, 35,3% sofreram morte prematura e violenta. Conclusão: A pesquisa possibilitou identificar as características do TPA no cinema nacional. As trajetórias dos personagens contaram com trechos de realismo variável, mas muitas cenas foram capazes de representar o diagnóstico com clareza. Os dados se mostraram suficientes para indicar a potencialidade do material como base didático-pedagógica.

INTRODUÇÃO: Em virtude de sua fácil acessibilidade, o cinema parece influenciar bastante a imagem que a sociedade faz da Psiquiatria. OBJETIVO: Realizar uma revisão sistemática da literatura sobre o retrato da Psiquiatria pelos cinemas norte-americano e brasileiro. MÉTODOS: Sem limite de data, fez-se uma busca bibliográfica manual e nos seguintes bancos de dados: LILACS, MedLine, PsychLit, PsycINFO e SciELO. Usaram-se as seguintes combinações de descritores em inglês e, nas bases LILACS e SciELO, os correspondentes em português: "psychiatry" E/OU "motion pictures as topic". Estipularam-se critérios precisos de inclusão e exclusão. RESULTADOS: Vinte artigos indexados e dois livros. No cinema norte-americano, tais fontes evidenciaram um constante retrato estereotipado de diferentes aspectos da Psiquiatria, cuja imagem se mostrou ambivalente e com cinco fases distintas de sua representação. No cinema brasileiro, os escassos estudos se limitaram praticamente à fase de "Retomada" e mostraram que a maioria dos filmes apresentava algum conteúdo psicopatológico. DISCUSSÃO: Apesar da dificuldade de comparação entre as fontes encontradas, uma vez que quase todas eram descritivas, foi possível traçar um paralelo do retrato da Psiquiatria entre as películas dos Estados Unidos e as nacionais. CONCLUSÃO: A representação da Psiquiatria difere bastante entre os cinemas norte-americano e brasileiro, sobretudo pela amostra de os filmes analisados abrangerem períodos bem distintos.
INTRODUCTION: As cinema has an easy accessibility, it seems to influence society's image of psychiatry. OBJECTIVES: To accomplish a systematic review of the literature about the portrayal of psychiatry in American and Brazilian films. METHODS: With no date limits, we searched the databases: LILACS, MedLine, PsychLit, PsycINFO and SciELO. We used the following terms in English and, in LILACS and SciELO, their equivalent in Portuguese: "psychiatry" AND/OR "motion pictures as topic". A manual search was also done. Accurate inclusion and exclusion criteria were stipulated. RESULTS: Twenty indexed articles and two books. In American cinema, the data have allowed to identify a constant stereotyped portrayal of different aspects of psychiatry, its ambivalent image and five distinct phases of its depiction. In Brazilian cinema, the few studies about the image of psychiatry have focused on "The retaken" phase. The majority of its films have showed some psychopathological content. DISCUSSION: As almost all articles have been descriptive, it was difficult to establish a comparison among them. However, it was possible to draw a parallel between US films and Brazilian ones. CONCLUSION: The portrayal of psychiatry differs between American and Brazilian cinema mainly because the sample of analyzed movies came from very distinct periods.

CONTEXTO: Filmes têm sido utilizados como recurso terapêutico. A cinematerapia propõe uma nova intervenção psicoterápica por meio da indicação de filmes comerciais. OBJETIVOS: Realizar uma revisão sistemática da literatura sobre as características, aplicações e o efeito terapêutico da cinematerapia e identificar técnicas da terapia cognitivo-comportamental (TCC) nessa revisão. MÉTODOS: Sem limite de data, fez-se uma busca bibliográfica manual e nos seguintes bancos de dados: LILACS, MEDLINE, SciELO e PsycINFO. Combinaram-se os seguintes descritores em inglês e, na base LILACS, os correspondentes em português: "motion pictures as topic" E "psychiatry" OU "psychotherapy", além de "cinematherapy". Estipularam-se critérios precisos de inclusão e exclusão. RESULTADOS: Quatro artigos indexados, três livros e dois artigos não indexados. Vinte e cinco técnicas da TCC foram identificadas. DISCUSSÃO: A análise dos resultados permitiu delinear a cinematerapia desde suas características até seus efeitos terapêuticos. Embora positivo, o impacto do uso de filmes comerciais em psicoterapia partiu na maioria de relatos de caso e inferências pessoais; houve apenas dois ensaios clínicos. CONCLUSÃO: A identificação de várias técnicas da TCC e os resultados de alguns estudos apontam para uma provável eficácia da cinematerapia. Entretanto, seu efeito terapêutico precisa de melhor evidência científica que o sustente.
BACKGROUND: Motion pictures can be used as a therapeutic resource. Cinematherapy proposed a new psychotherapeutic intervention indicating commercial films. OBJECTIVES: A systematic literature review of the characteristics and therapeutic effects of cinematherapy and to identify cognitive-behavior techniques (CBT) in this review. METHODS: With no date limits, we searched the databases: LILACS, MEDLINE, SciELO and PsycINFO. We used the following terms in English and, in LILACS, their equivalent in Portuguese: "motion pictures as topic" AND "psychiatry" OR "psychotherapy"; besides "cinematherapy". A manual search was also done. Accurate inclusion and exclusion criteria were stipulated. RESULTS: Four indexed articles, three books and two no indexed articles. Twenty-five CBT were identified. DISCUSSION: The analysis of data allowed the description of cinematherapy: its characteristics and therapeutic effects. The positive impact of cinematherapy was shown mainly through case reports and personal inferences; only two clinical essays were found. CONCLUSION: The identification of several CBT and the results of some studies have indicated a probable efficacy of cinematherapy. Controlled studies are necessary.
